WESMEN DROP OPENING GAME TO GOLDEN HAWKS

The host Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 85-74 Friday night at the Wilfrid Laurier Invitational in Waterloo, Ontario.

Eric Zimmerman and Peter Lomuro scored 18 points each to lead the Wesmen.

Kale Harrison led Laurier with a game high 26 points, Jesse MacDonald added 23 points.

The Wesmen trailed after the opening ten minutes 25-19 and continued to keep pace with the Golden Hawks in the second. Wilfrid Laurier went into the halftime break leading 45-38.

Wilfrid Laurier seemed to be running away with the game in the third quarter opening up their biggest lead of the game at 67-50. The Wesmen did not give up scoring eight unanswered points, (five by Zimmerman) to cut the deficit to 67-58 after three quarters.

The Hawks kept the Wesmen attack under control in a tight defensive fourth quarter to close out the game.

Despite the loss Head Coach Dave Crook was happy with the way his team performed.

"We did some good things really well. We just could not get any breaks when we needed one, but I saw a lot of positive things out there, said Crook.

Winnipeg will take on Brock University Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.

TEAM EFFORT HELPS WESMEN BEAT  BROCK

A total team effort played a huge role in helping the Winnipeg Wesmen defeat Brock University 86-83 Saturday afternoon at the Wilfrid laurier Invitational in Waterloo, Ontario.

Four Wesmen players figured in double digits. Eric Zimmerman led the charge with a game high 29 points and was stellar on the defense with five steals. Peter Lomuro was solid adding 18 points. Nick Lother scored 13 points, dished out seven assists and had four steals. Adam Dobriansky finished with 10 points and five rebounds. Ryan Willerton came up with two big blocks for the Wesmen.

C. Springer Williams scored a team high 28 points for the Badgers. Didi Nukendi added 22 points.

Winnipeg jumped out of the gate on a positive note leading 22-19 after the opening quarter and after a solid second quarter opened up a 45-38 lead at halftime.

The Badgers got themselves right back into the game in the third quarter outscoring the Wesmen 24-19 to cut the Wesmen lead to 64-62 after three quarters of play.

In the final quarter Winnipeg responded to Brock's challenge by going on a 11-2 run in a span of 2:15 to open up a 75-64 lead. The Badgers came back later in the quarter outscoring the Wesmen 11-6 to cut the Winnipeg lead to 81-75 with over three minutes to play.

Brock managed to tie the game at 81-81 scoring six stright points late in the fourth quarter. Winnipeg guard Nick Lother made the decisive play of the game coming with a steal and than proceeding to drain a jumper with 26 seconds left on the clock to give the Wesmen a 83-81 lead. Winnipeg was good on their free throws in the final 20 seconds to secure the win.

Nick Lother was named to the Tournament All-Star team.

CAPE BRETON DOWN WESMEN IN PRE SEASON ACTION

The Cape Breton University Capers defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 74-56 in a pre season game at the University of Manitoba Sunday afternoon.

Amy Ogidan was the lone spark for the Wesmen scoring 30 points and grabbing seven rebounds.

The Wesmen will close out their pre season schedule at next weeks University of Manitoba Invitational. The Wesmen will play Saskatchewan on Friday (8:00 p.m.) followed by the Manitoba Bisons (6:00 p.m.) on Saturday night. The Wesmen will wrap up the tournament against Toronto on Sunday afternoon (12:00 p.m).
