THUNDERWOLVES EDGE WESMEN IN SHOOTOUT OPENER

The Lakehead University Thunderwolves opened up the 2009 BOB FM Shootout with a 67-63 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.

Fourth year guard Tasia McKenna led the Wolves with a game high 24 points, including six three pointers. Shannon Vellinga added 14 points. Winnipeg native Georgia Harvey led the team with seven rebounds.

Third year guard Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with 21 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Mackenzie Prasek added 19 points, including five-three pointers. Kaitlin Rempel added eight points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Winnipeg was without the services of Catie Gooch, Jessica Stromberg and Alex MacIver for the contest.

Winnipeg dug themselves an early hole trailing 21-6 after the opening quarter but rebounded in the second quarter, outscoring Lakehead 22-14 to cut the deficit to 35-28 at halftime.

The teams exchanged baskets in a tight defensive third quarter with the Wolves outscoring the Wesmen 17-15 to extend their lead to 52-43 after three quarters.

A three pointer by Amy Ogidan to open up the final frame cut the Lakehead lead to 52-46 but back to back three pointers by Tasia McKenna extended the lead to double digits at 58-46. The Wesmen rallied outscoring the Wolves 15-4 in a span of under four minutes to cut the lead to 64-63. The Wolves answered back with a free throw and a two pointer in the final 13 seconds to secure the victory.

Game two of the series will take place at the Duckworth Centre Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m.


AWAY:

Men's Volleyball vs Saskatchewan (University of Regina Invitational)

WESMEN def Saskatchewan 3-1 (17-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-22)

The Winnipeg Wesmen opened up the University of Regina Invitational Tournament on a winning note downing the Saskatchewan Huskies 3-1 (17-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-22) Friday afternoon in Regina.

First year left side Matt Schriemer led the Wesmen with 10 kills. Kenny McKenzie, another first year player added six blocks and Marc Ross contributed two service aces to the victory.

The Wesmen will take on Mount Royal University Friday night in the evening draw of the tournament.

Men's Volleyball vs Mount Royal University (University of Regina Invitational)

WESMEN def Mount Royal University 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-23)

The Wesmen finished the opening day of the University of Regina Invitational undefeated, The Wesmen defeated Mount Royal University 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-23) in the evening match in Regina.

John Swanepoel led the Wesmen with 11 kills. Marc Ross had another solid match finishing with nine kills and 11 digs.

Winnipeg (2-0) will take on the defending CIS champions the Alberta Golden Bears in the final match of the preliminary round Saturday afternoon. The semi finals will be played Saturday night with the final round being played on Sunday.

OGIDAN LEADS WESMEN TO VICTORY OVER WOLVES

The Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the Lakehead University Thunderwolves 79-72 in the final game of the BOB FM Shootout at the Duckworth Centre Saturday night.

Amy Ogidan was the spark plug for the Wesmen scoring a game high 30 points, including three-three pointers, 12 rebounds, and three steals. Fifth year guard Randie Gibson poured in 12 points on four-three pointers and a team high four assists. Mackenzie Prasek scored 11 points with three assists and two steals.

Tasia McKenna was the leading scorer for Lakehead with 26 points, including four-three pointers and eight rebounds. Shannon Vellinga added 18 points and seven rebounds.     

The Wesmen shot the lights out in the opening quarter scoring five-three pointers on their way to a 25-15 lead after the opening ten minutes. Randie Gibson scored three-three pointers during a 15-2 run to kick start the Wesmen attack.

Lakehead cut into the Wesmen lead in a tight defensive quarter by both teams. The Wolves outscored the Wesmen 14-12 to cut the Wesmen lead to single digits at 37-29 heading into the halftime break.

Winnipeg continued to put the pressure on the visitors in the third quarter. The Wesmen connected on two three pointers (one each by Gibson and Mackenzie Prasek) to open up their biggest lead of the night at 51-36 with just over three minutes to play in the quarter. Lakehead was able to rebound going on an 11-5 run in the final three minutes to make the score 56-47 in Winnipeg’s favor after three quarters.

The Wolves made a charge late in the fourth quarter but the Wesmen were able to hold their ground for the victory.

Men's Volleyball vs Alberta (University of Regina Invitational)

Alberta def WESMEN 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-14)

In their final match of the preliminary round of the University of Regina Invitational the Wesmen were swept 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-14) by the defending CIS champions Alberta Golden Bears Saturday afternoon.

Matt Scriemer once again led the Wesmen with 10 kills. Derek Miller finished the match with six defensive digs.

Winnipeg finishes the preliminary round with a record of 2-1 and will face the Manitoba Bisons in the semi finals Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.


Men's Volleyball vs Manitoba (Semi Finals) (University of Regina Invitational)

Manitoba def WESMEN 3-1 ( 25-13, 26-24, 20-25, 25-22)

The Manitoba Bisons scored a 3-1 (25-13, 26-24, 20-25, 25-22) victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen in the semi finals of the University of Regina Invitational Tournament Saturday night.

Matt Schriemer was a force for the Wesmen finishing the match with 20 kills. Jaye Burnett had 12 defensive digs and middle blocker Devin Schmidt had three blocks.

Winnipeg will face the Calgary Dinos in the third place match Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m.

Calgary def WESMEN 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 26-24)

The Calgary Dinos defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 26-24) in the third place match Sunday afternoon at the University of Regina Invitational Sunday afternoon.

Matt Stubler led the Wesmen with 10 kills. Derek Miller had 14 defensive digs.

The Wesmen finish the three day tournament in fourth place.
