WESMEN FALL TO MANITOBA IN CHALLENGE OPENER

The Manitoba Bisons gained the upper hand of the 19th Annual Duckworth Challenge. The Bisons defeated the Wesmen 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-21) in the volleyball portion of the 19th Annual Duckworth Challenge at the Duckworth Centre Tuesday night.

Kristin Hunter and Sarah Morrissette led Manitoba with nine kills each. Ashley Voth had eight kills. Tricia Mayba finished with five kills and three blocks.

Lauren Sears led the Wesmen with seven kills. Sonia Rossy was next with six kills. Ariel Smith had four kills and a match high 15 digs.

Winnipeg scored the opening two points of the first set but the Bisons answered back in a big way scoring seven straight points to take a 7-2 lead. The Bisons continued to dominate the first set going on a 7-1 run to increase their lead to 14-5. The Bisons led 16-6 at the second technical and cruised to a 25-12 first set win.

Manitoba held off a determined Wesmen squad in the early portion of the second set. Manitoba held a slim 8-6 lead at the first technical but were able to expand their lead to 16-11 at the second break.The Bisons would go onto win the second set by an identical 25-12 score.

In set number three Manitoba scored six unanswered points to open up a 6-1 lead early on and went into the techical timeout leading 8-3. The break seemed to inspire the Wesmen as they reeled off four straight points to close the gap to 8-7. The teams exchanged points to the second timeout with Manitoba leading 16-13. The Bisons would soon after close out the third and the match with a 25-21 set advantage.

Tricia Mayba (Manitoba) and Ariel Smith (Winnipeg) were named the Duckworth Challenge Players of the Match for their respective teams.

Manitobs def WESMEN 3-2 (17-25, 22-25, 25-18, 27-25, 15-13)

BISONS COMEBACK TO BEAT WESMEN

The Manitoba Bisons erased a two set defecit to defeat the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-2 (17-25, 22-25, 25-18, 27-25, 15-13) at the Ducworth Centre Tuesday night.

Dane Pischke and Chris Voth led Manitoba with 14 kills each. Ryan Munt had 13 defensive digsd. Zack Diboll had 20 assists and six digs.

Andrew Town and Justin Duff each finished the match with 13 kills. Maurice Williams had a strong match with 12 kills. Dan Lother completed the match with 11 digs. Town also had a team high four solo blocks.

The Wesmen jumped out of the gate on a positive note leading at both technical timeouts of the first set by scores of 8-4 and 16-11. Andrew Town came up with two big kills down the stretch to propel Winnipeg to a first win by a score of 25-17.

Winnipeg continued to carry the momentum in the second set racing out to a 8-3 lead at the first technical and continued to hold the lead at 16-12 at the second break. Winnipeg went on to win the second set 25-22.

Manitoba took advantage of some Wesmen errors in the third set leading 8-4 and 16-10 at the technical timeouts. The Bisons got back into the match winning the second set 25-18.

In the fourth set Winnipeg carried the play early on jumping out to a 8-5 lead at the first timeout before Manitoba mounted a comeback outscoring the Wesmen 11-3 to take a 16-11 lead at the second technical timeout. The Wesmen did not fold as they manged to fight off two match points late in the set to tie the score at 24-24. Manitoba eventually won the tough fourth set 27-25.

The Wesmen started the fifth set leading 4-0 but the Bisons scored six straight points tie take a 6-4 lead midway thru the final set. Winnipeg would go on to score three of the next four points to tie the score at 7-7. The teams exchanged points with the Bisons managing to open up a three point lead at 13-10. Manitoba went on to win the match winning the fifth set 15-13.

Zack Diboll (Manitoba) and Justin Duff (Winnipeg) were named the Duckworth Challenge Players of the Match.

BISONS RAIN THREES TO BEAT WESMEN

The Manitoba Bisons used the "long ball" to defeat the Winnipeg Wesmen 88-69 Wednesday night in the basketball portion of the 19th Annual Duckworth Challenge at the University of
Manitoba.

The Bisons drained 13 three pointers in the contest which prooved to be the difference in the game.

Lauren Mortier led Manitoba with a game high 27 points, including seven three pointers.
Kayla Klassen added 20 points, with four three's. Michele Hynes added 12 points and dished
out 11 assists.

Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with 21 points, including three-three pointers and eight rebounds.
Caity Gooch added 13 points and seven assists. Randie Gibson shared the team lead with seven assists.

The Bisons, thanks to six three pointers in an explosive opening quarter jumped out to a 26-17 lead on the visiting Wesmen team. Kayla Klassen drained a trio of three pointers and scored 13 points in the quarter to pace the home squad.

Manitoba kept the Wesmen attack under wraps in the second quarter outscoring Winnipeg 19-14 to open up a 45-31 lead at halftime.

Klassen went into the halftime break with a game leading 13 points. Lauren Mortier followed with 11 points, including three-three pointers.

Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with nine points in the opening half followed by Catie Gooch with
six.

Manitoba led 58-42 at the midway point of the third quarter before the Wesmen led by Amy Ogidan's seven points down the stretch cut the Bison lead to 64-56. The eight point lead was the first time the Wesmen trailed by single digits since very early in the first quarter. Lauren Mortier drained a three with 12 seconds to play to give Manitoba a 66-56 lead after three quarters.

Manitobs maintained their double digit lead for the entire fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Caity Gooch (Winnipeg) and Michele Hynes (Manitoba) were named the Duckworth Challenge Players of the Game.

BISONS DOWN WESMEN IN DUCKWORTH CHALLENGE FINALE

The Manitoba Bisons earned bragging rights on this night. The Bisons defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 77-71 in the finale of the 19th Annual Duckworth Challenge at the University of Manitoba.

The two basketball wins by the Bisons combined with the two Bison volleyball victories last night at the Duckworth Centre gives the University of Manitoba the Duckworth Challenge Trophy for this year.

Richard Reimer led Manitoba with 15 points. Sean Maxwell added 14 points, including four three pointers. Eric Garcia scored 13 points and dished out seven assists.

Mike James James Winnipeg with 19 points. Peter Lomuro finished with 18 points and a team leading nine rebounds. Craig Penniston added 15 points, three assists and four steals.

The Bisons gained the early advantage in the battle of city rivals jumping ahead of the Wesmen 22-13 in a tight defensive opening frame.

Led by Craig Penniston and Peter Lomuro Winnipeg found their game in the second quarter  going on a 17-5 run in the first seven minutes of play to take a 30-27 lead. Manitoba rebounded scoring seven unanswered points to regain the lead at 34-30. Lomuro drained a three pointer with seven seconds left to cut the Bison lead to 34-33 at halftime.

The two rivals matched each other basket for basket in the third quarter. The Bisons led by a narrow margin of 45-44 at the midway point. Lomuro of the Wesmen and Eric Garcia (Manitoba) each scored a pair of baskets to put the score at 56-50 in Manitoba's favour. Craig Penniston nailed a jumper with 20 seconds left to cut the Bison lead to 56-52 after three quarters.

Manitoba held off a Wesmen charge in the fourth quarter, outscoring Winnipeg 21-19 in the final frame to preserve the win.

Craig Penniston (Winnipeg) and Eric Garcia (Manitoba) were named the Duckworth Challenge Players of the Game.
