Men’s Volleyball – Winnipeg vs Montreal (Special Exhibition Match)

WESMEN SWEEP VISITING CARABINS
The Winnipeg Wesmen started their pre-season schedule on a winning note downing the University of Montreal Carabins 3-0 (25-11, 25-22, 25-23) Thursday evening at the Duckworth Centre.
The Wesmen dominated the opening set holding leads of 8-3 and 16-7 at the technical timeouts. Winnipeg would go on to outscore Montreal 9-4 down the stretch to take the first set 25-11.
The second set was much closer then the opening set. Winnipeg held a slim 8-6 lead at the first break but were able to extend their lead to 16-11 at the second break. The Wesmen went on to win the second set 25-22.
The third set was another close affair with the Wesmen leading at both technicals 8-4 and 16-12. Montreal gained momentum at the end of the set but the Wesmen were able to hold their ground to take the third set 25-23.
The Wesmen will now travel to Brandon tomorrow morning to take part in the Brandon University Invitational Tournament. The Wesmen will take on the host Bobcats in the opening match at 12:30 p.m.

BOBCATS DOWN WESMEN IN LEA MARC OPENER
The Brandon University Bobcats defeated the hometown Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (16-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-16) in the opening match of the 2009 Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge at the Duckworth Centre Thursday night.
Winnipeg got off to a solid start building leads of 8-6 and 16-11 at the technical timeouts on their way to a convincing 25-16 opening set win.
Brandon rebounded in the second set leading 8-6 and 16-14 at the breaks. The teams battled trading point for point until the Bobcats jumped ahead 26-24 to tie the match at one set apiece.
The Wesmen looked to rebound in the third set jumping out to a 8-6 lead at the first break before the Bobcats were able to claw their way back into the set leading 16-15 at the second technical. The Bobcats would continue to keep the Wesmen attack at bay and win the third set 25-23.
In the fourth set Brandon held off the Wesmen for the majority of the set leading 8-5 and 16-12 at the set breaks. The Bobcats would close out the set outscoring the Wesmen 9-4 to win the fourth set 25-16.
The Players of the Match were Becky Young (Brandon) and Carleen Kruschel (Winnipeg).
The Wesmen will hit the court for two matches on Friday beginning with Wilfred Laurier at 2:00 p.m. followed by the Regina Cougars at 7:00 p.m.

WESMEN EVEN RECORD WITH WIN OVER GOLDEN HAWKS
The host Winnipeg Wesmen recorded their first victory at this years Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge with a dramatic 3-2 (23-25, 25-10, 26-24, 19-25, 16-14) victory over the Wilfred Laurier University Golden Hawks Friday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre.
First year left side Carleen Kruschel led the Wesmen with a match high nine kills. Third year middle Alix Krahn had a strong match with eight kills and several key blocks. Ariel Smith was strong on the defensive side recording nine digs.
First year right side Amara Ilias led Wilfrd Laurier with seven kills.
Winnipeg (1-1) will take on the Regina Cougars (1-0) in Friday's late match at 7:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre. Wilfred Laurier (0-1) will challenge Brandon (1-1) at 5:00 p.m.

WESMEN DOWN COUGARS IN FIVE SET THRILLER
In a five set thriller the Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the Regina Cougars 3-2 (25-22, 18-25, 25-19, 19-25, 27-25) in the evening match at the 2009 Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge at the Duckworth Centre. The total match time was just over two hours.
Ariel Smith led the Wesmen with 15 kills and nine digs. Lauren Sears had a strong match finishing with 12 kills. Alix Krahn and Carleen Kruschel contributed 10 kills each.
Beth Clark led the Cougars with a match high 23 kills. Roxanne Olynyk had 12 kills.
The first set was a back and fourth affair with Regina leading 8-6 at the first timeout before the Wesmen responded to take a 16-15 lead at the second technical timeout. Winnipeg continued their strong play to win the first set 25-22.
Regina made adjustments and was able to maintain the lead for the entire second set and went on to even the match winning the second set 25-18.
In the third set Winnipeg led at both timeouts 8-5 and 16-14. The Wesmen would go on to outscore the Cougars 9-5 down the stretch to win the third set 25-19.
In a do or die set the Cougars rallied in the fourth set with a 25-19 advantage to even the match and force a fifth and deciding set.
The eventful fifth set saw the Cougars leading 14-11 but the Wesmen were able to fight off three match points to tie the score at 14-14. The teams exchanged points to 25-25 before a big kill by Lauren Sears and a match ending block by Alix Krahn gave the Wesmen a 27-25 fifth set win.
Winnipeg (2-1) will face the Manitoba Bisons (2-0) Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.

WESMEN FALL TO BISONS IN THREE
The University of Manitoba Bisons swept the host Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-20) on Saturday afternoon at the 2009 Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge at the Duckworth Centre.
Ashley Voth paced the Bisons with a match high 13 kills. Sarah Morrissette was next with eight kills.
Leah Brezinski led the Wesmen with six kills. First year Carleen Kruschel added five kills.
Manitoba gained the advantage early in the first set holding a slim 8-7 lead at the first technical timeout. The teams exchanged points to 11-11, when Manitoba scored five straight points to hold a 16-11 lead at the second break. The Bisons outscored the Wesmen 9-4 down the stretch to win the opening set 25-15.
In set number two the Bisons raced out to leads of 8-2 and 16-7 at the technical timeouts. The Wesmen were unable to respond as Manitoba went on to win the second set 25-12.
A determined Wesmen squad got back on track in the third set leading 8-6 at the first technical timeout. The Wesmen continued to maintain a lead at the midway point of the set (14-11) when the Bisons went on a 5-0 run to take a 16-14 lead at the second timeout. Manitoba would eventually close out the match winning the third set 25-21.
Winnipeg (2-2) will close out their portion of the tournament against the Toronto Varsity Blues this evening at 7:00 p.m.

VARSITY BLUES DOWN WESMEN IN THREE
The Toronto Varsity Blues picked up their first win of the Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 27-25) win over the Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.
Head Coach Diane Scott used this match as an opportunity to play her first year players and give them some exposure to university level volleyball.
In the first set the Varsity Blues jumped ahead of the Wesmen 8-5 at the first technical timeout. Toronto extended their lead to 14-10 when the Wesmen rallied scoring five unanswered points to take a 15-14 lead. Toronto regrouped and carried a three point advantage for the remainder of the set that they eventually won 25-21.
The hometown Wesmen started set number two on a positive note leading 8-6 at the first technical timeout. The two teams continued to battle and exchange points until the second set break with Toronto holding a slim 16-15 advantage. The Varsity Blues would go on to win set number two 25-20.
Winnipeg was looking to get back into the match in set number three and things started off on a great note with the team jumping out to a 8-6 lead at the first timeout. Winnipeg scored three unanswered points to take their biggest lead of the set at 11-6. The Varsity Blues regrouped outscoring the Wesmen 6-1 to tie the score at 12-12. The teams exchanged points to the second break with the Wesmen leading 16-15.
The teams continued to battle exchanging points late in the set. The Varsity Blues won the battle winning the third set 27-25.
Winnipeg finishes the 2009 Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge with a record of 2-3. Winnipeg will now prepare for the volleyball portion of the Duckworth Challenge that will be played on Tuesday night at the Duckworth Centre.
