Women's Basketball at Regina
WESMEN 71  Regina 98  Boxscore

The University of Regina Cougars got off to a quick start and cruised to a 98-71 win over the Winnipeg Wesmen on Saturday night in Canada West action in Regina, Saskatchewan.

The #1 ranked Cougars remain unbeaten improving their record to 15-0. Winnipeg drops to .500 with a record of 8-8.

Regina was led by Lindsay Ledingham, who scored a game-high 22 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Michelle Clark (18 points), Danielle Schmidt (12), and Brittany Read (11) also scored in double figures for the Cougars. Jennilea Coppola led all players with 12 rebounds.

Yael Kaplan led Winnipeg with 20 points. Amy Ogidan added 17 and  Stephanie Kleysen finished with 13 points. First year forward Alex Warburton led the Wesmen with seven rebounds.

After taking a six-point lead into the second quarter, the No. 1-ranked Cougars caught fire and went on a huge 17-1 run to open up a 20-point lead by the four-minute mark of the period. The Cougars shot 50% in the first half alone and held an 18-point advantage at the break (52-34).

Winnipeg  mounted a brief charge late in the third quarter and scored 11 consecutive points to cut the lead down to 12, but back-to-back three-pointers by Michelle Clark restored the big advantage for the Cougars.

Winnipeg will host the Saskatchewan Huskies next Friday and Saturday to close out their regular season home schedule.

The Regina Cougars erased a nine-point fourth-quarter deficit en route to a 79-72 win over the Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday evening on the road in Regina, Saskatchewan.

The win improves Regina’s Canada West record to 5-10. The loss drops the Wesmen to 4-12.

The Cougars did most of their damage with a 12-1 run over a three and a half minute span in the fourth, with a Brendan Hebert triple giving Regina its first lead since midway through the second quarter. A three-pointer by Travis Krahn brought Winnipeg back to within two with just under four minutes left, but the Cougars replied with a Sterling Nostedt three-pointer and led by at least five for the rest of the game.

Brendan Hebert led the way for the Cougars with a team-high 19 points. Gradyn Childerhose had 14 points, while Sterling Nostedt and Paul Gareau both scored 13 and Connor Burns had 10 points and 10 rebounds to notch his second double-double in as many nights.

Mark McNee led all scorers with 21 points for Winnipeg and fell one rebound short of a double-double. Four other Wesmen players hit double figures in scoring, including Dominique Brown with 13, Travis Krahn and Benny Iko added 11 and Andrew Cunningham finished with 10. Iko also led all players with 12 rebounds to complete the double-double, while Cunningham added a game-high five steals and dished out four assists.

Winnipeg hosts Saskatchewan next Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre to wrap up their regular season home schedule. Game times are scheduled for 8:00 p.m.

Women's Basketball at Regina

WESMEN 62  Regina 84  Boxscore

The No. 1-ranked University of Regina Cougars  led from start to finish in an 84-62 win over the Winnipeg Wesmen Friday night in Regina, Saskatchewan.

The victory keeps Regina unbeaten at 14-0. The loss drops Winnipeg to 8-7.
 
Michelle Clark scored 14 points to lead the way for the Cougars. Lindsay Ledingham 12 points, Jennilea Coppola 11, and Joanna Zalesiak 11 also broke into double figures.

Stephanie Kleysen and Amy Ogidan both led Winnipeg with 14 points each, while Alyssa Grant chipped in with 12. Ogidan led all players with seven rebounds.
 
The Cougars led by seven after the first quarter, but three-pointers by Grant and Yael Kaplan on back-to-back possession brought Winnipeg to within one point early in the second. Regina countered with an 8-0 run of its own and added another eight straight points just before halftime and led by 12 at the break by a score of 39-27. Another 12-3 run by the home side pushed the lead over 20 at the midway point of the third quarter, and the Cougars were able to stretch their bench in the fourth and cruise to victory.
 
The Cougars were sharp from downtown, hitting nine of their 25 shots from three-point range. Winnipeg hit just three of its 18 three-point attempts, two of which were by Grant.
 
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night to wrap up the two game weekend series. Game time is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.


Men's Basketball at Regina

WESMEN 79  Regina 86  Boxscore

The Winnipeg Wesmen fell short in an 86-79 loss to the Regina Cougars Friday night in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Regina with the win improves their record to 4-10. Winnipeg with the loss falls to 4-11.

Paul Gareau led the Cougars with a game high 31 points and added 12 rebounds for a double-double. Connor Burns also scored a double-double for Regina, scoring 15 points and hauling in  11 rebounds. Antonio Tate scored 11 points and added a game-high five steals to go along with a team-leading four assists.

Winnipeg was led by Dominique Brown, who scored a team-high 17 points. Travis Krahn had 15 points while Kelvin Smith scored 14 and Mark McNee chipped in with 10. Andrew Cunningham had eight rebounds and led all players with eight assists.

The game was a back-and-forth affair through the first quarter and a half until the Cougars went on an 11-0 run to open up a nine-point advantage late in the second. Though Regina never gave up the lead after that and even held a 19-point edge early in the fourth, Winnipeg didn’t make it easy on them. The Wesmen chipped away at the deficit and cut it all the way down to five in the final minute of the contest, but rookie guard Ryan Schmidt hit two late free throws for the Cougars to ice the victory.

Winnipeg and Regina will square off again on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m.
