Men's Volleyball vs UBC

The UBC Thunderbirds gained a split in their weekend series defeating the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-18) Saturday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

With the victory the #5 ranked T-Birds improve their record to 9-7. The #10 ranked Wesmen team fall to 7-11.

David Zeyha and Robert Bennett led the T-Birds with 12 kills each. Jarrid Ireland finished with 11. Ian Perry finished with a match high 22 defensive digs. Cary Brett was in on five total blocks. Setter Milan Nikic finished with 38 assists.

Nathaniel Therrien and Ty Loewen led Winnipeg with eight kills each. Brendan Black added six. Fifth year setter Zack Diboll led the team with 13 defensive digs and 21 assists. Black was the leader in blocks with two.

The two teams exchanged points in the opening part of the first set with neither team holding a lead of more than two points. Winnipeg changed that soon after leading 14-11 until the turning point of the set. UBC reeled off six straight points to take a 17-14 lead and eventually went on to win the set 25-21.

Set number two started out as a carbon copy of the opening set with both teams exchanging points. Back to back kills by Therrien gave the Wesmen the lead at 9-6. A big run of seven straight points by the T-Birds gave them the lead right back by a score of 13-9. UBC went on to lead 16-11 at the technical break and took control of the match winning the second set by an identical 25-21 score.

UBC gained the advantage in the third set leading 16-15 at the technical break. Winnipeg stayed within striking distance trailing 20-18 late in the set. As in the first two sets, a big run was the difference as UBC reeled five points in a row to close out the third set 25-18.

UBC will be at home next weekend again Brandon. Winnipeg will have a short week playing on Wednesday night at home against the Manitoba Bisons in the 21st Annual Duckworth Challenge. Match time is 7:30 p.m.

Note: A special pre match ceremony took place prior to the match. The 1985-86 and 1986-87 Wesmen Men's CIAU Championship winning teams coached by Dave Unruh were honoured, commemorating the 25th anniversary of their back-to back titles.


Women's Volleyball vs UBC

The #1 ranked UBC Thunderbirds defeated the #5 ranked Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (23-25, 25-13, 25-21, 25-16) in the wrap up match of the weekend series at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The victory improves UBC's record to 15-1. The Wesmen sit with a record of 12-6.

Lisa Barclay led the T-Birds with a match high 15 kills. Shanice Marcelle added 14 while Kyla Richey finished with 13. Marcelle led the team with 16 defensive digs. Jessica von Schilling was in on six blocks. Brina Derksen-Bergen had 41 assists.

Fifth year middle Lauren Sears led the Wesmen with 14 kills and two blocks. Ozana Nikolic was next with 13 kills. Carleen Kruschel and Tesca Andrew-Wasylik shared the team league in digs with 13 each. Kruschel served up three aces. Setter Brittany Habing had 39 assists.

In the opening set UBC opened up an early 7-4 lead, but Winnipeg responded scoring four of the next five points to tie the set at 8-8. The teams exchanged points and at the technical timeout UBC held a slim 16-15 lead. The teams were deadlocked at 20-20 when Lauren Sears pounded home three kills to give Winnipeg a 24-23 lead. A service error by Lisa Barclay gave Winnipeg the first set by a score of 25-23.

The defending CIS champions jumped back into the match in a big way in the second set. UBC built a 7-1 lead and continued to lead 16-7 at the technical timeout before eventually winning the set 25-13.

In the third set the T-Birds once again got off to a great start leading 10-4 in the early stages and holding a 16-10 lead at the technical timeout. Winnipeg did fight back late in the set staving off a pair off set points until a kill by Rosie Schlagintweit gave UBC the third set by a score of 25-21.

Winnipeg battled in the fourth set and only trailed by a pair (16-14) at the technical timeout. The T-Birds went on a set ending 9-2 run soon after that to win the fourth set 25-16.

"Overall we had a pretty good weekend. Obviously not the outcome we wanted but we improved by playing against a solid team like UBC and we will use what we learned in this last week of league play and into the playoffs", said second year setter Brittany Habing.

UBC will be at home next weekend again Brandon. The Wesmen will have a short week playing on Wednesday night at home against the Manitoba Bisons in the 21st Annual Duckworth Challenge. Match time is 6:00 p.m.

Women's Volleyball vs UBC

In a battle between the top two teams in the Canada West Conference standings, the #1 ranked UBC Thunderbirds defeated the #5 ranked Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (25-22, 25-17, 19-25, 25-17) Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The victory improves UBC's record to 14-1, Winnipeg with the loss stands at 12-5.

Fifth year left side Kyla Richey led UBC with a match high 17 kills. Shanice Marcelle added 15. Marcelle also led the team with 20 defensive digs and three service aces. Rayel Quiring and Jessica Von Schilling were in on six blocks each. Setter Kirsty Setterlund had 32 assists.

First year left side Ozana Nikolic and third year left side Carleen Kruschel led Winnipeg with 13 kills each. Fifth year middle Lauren Sears had 10 kills and four blocks. Libero Tesca Andrew-Wasylik finished with a match high 23 digs. Setter Brittany Habing had 40 assists.

The teams started the opening set exchanging points with no team leading by more than one point until The T-Birds led at 11-9. UBC carried the lead to the technical break ahead 16-13. The T-Birds built a 24-19 lead late in the set but a determined Wesmen squad staved off three set points to close the gap to 24-22. A kill by Lisa Barclay closed out the set with UBC winning 25-22.

In the second set, UBC scored the first two points but with Ozana Nikolic serving, the Wesmen reeled off five straight points to take the lead at 5-2. UBC was able to regain the lead at the midway point of the set holding a 16-13 lead at the set break. The T-Birds went on to outscore the Wesmen 9-4 down the stretch to win the set 25-17.

Winnipeg came out firing in the third set thanks to timely kills and strong serving. Service aces by Kruschel and Habing helped the Wesmen jump out to a 11-9 lead. After a UBC timeout, the Wesmen with kills by Erika Buchanan, Nikolic and Kruschel and a service ace by Lauren Sears gave the Wesmen a 16-13 lead at the technical timeout. UBC managed to knot the score at 17-17 when Winnipeg reeled off three straight points to take a 20-17 lead on their way to winning the set by a score of 25-19.

After a tight opening fourth set, UBC managed to pull away and hold a 16-11 lead at the technical timeout. The Wesmen fought back to close the gap to 18-16 but kills by Richey down the stretch helped the T-Birds close out the match winning the fourth set 25-17.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Match time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
 
Men's Volleyball vs UBC

WESMEN def UBC 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-22) Boxscore

The #10 ranked Winnipeg Wesmen beat the #5 ranked UBC Thunderbirds in straight sets 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-22) Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

With the victory Winnipeg improves to 7-10. UBC falls to 8-7.

Second year outside Nathaniel Therrien led the Wesmen with a match high 10 kills. Devin Schmidt added seven. Matthew Stubler led Winnipeg with 11 defensive digs. Ty Loewen and Brendan Black each had three blocks.

Jarrid Ireland led UBC with seven kills. Robert Bennett added six. Ian Perry finished with a match high 12 digs.

UBC started the match leading 11-10 in a tight beginning to the opening set. The tide quickly turned in Winnipeg's favor. The Wesmen scored six straight points to take a 16-11 lead into the technical timeout and with the help of three kills by Devin Schmidt in the closing moments, went on to win the opening set 25-16.

The Wesmen used the momentum from the first set and came out on fire in the second set opening up a quick 16-9 lead at the technical break and eventually went on to win the second set 25-11.

The T-Birds looking for something to go their way started the third set leading 10-6 early on. The Wesmen squad was too good on this night, scoring four of the next five points to close the gap to 11-10. Winnipeg closed out the set on a kill by Ty Loewen taking the third set 25-22.

The two teams will battle in the early match Saturday night at 6:00 p.m.

Note: A special pre match ceremony will take place prior to the men's match. The 1985-86 and 1986-87 Wesmen Men's CIAU Championship winning teams will be honoured, commemorating the 25th anniversary of their back-to back titles.
