Volleyball Recap Against Trinity Western

The Wesmen Volleyball Teams Were On The Road This Weekend in Langley, British Columbia To Face The Trinity Western University Spartans.

The No. 7 ranked Trinity Western University Spartans completed a weekend sweep of the No. 2 ranked Winnipeg Wesmen with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-18) win Saturday night in Langley, British Columbia

The Spartans were led by Kelci French, who had seven kills, seven assists and six digs, Alicia Perrin, who had six kills, two blocks and a service ace and Nicole Bazin, who had a game-high four blocks to go along with three kills.

Winnipeg was led by Alicia Perry, who had a team-high six kills and three blocks, Carleen Kruschel, who had five kills, 11 digs and two aces, and Lauren Sears, who had five kills and an ace, the latter of which gave her the Canada West single season record for aces in a season with 38. The old record of 37 was held by Jenny Cartmell (University of Alberta, 1999-2000).

The win improves Trinity Western to 10-4 on the season while the loss drops Winnipeg to 12-4.

Winnipeg took the lead early in the first set as they opened a 9-4 advantage, which forced the Spartans into taking a timeout. Out of the timeout however, Trinity Western got three straight points to close to gap to two points at 9-7. But the Wesmen came right back with pressure as they extended their lead to five points, 16-11, by the technical timeout. But shortly after the break, the Spartans started buzzing. Trailing 17-12, the Spartans went on a 10-0 run. With the Spartans up 24-19, the Wesmen made a late run to get as close as two points but the Spartans eventually closed out the first set at 25-22.

In the second set, Trinity Western held the lead for the entire set and took control of the match winning the set 25-18.

The Spartans got off to a quick start in the third set as they built a 7-4 lead. However, the Wesmen turned things around in short order as they went on a 7-1 run with a Kruschel ace giving Winnipeg an 11-8 lead and forcing the Spartans into a timeout.Out of the timeout, the Spartans went on a 5-0 run to regain the lead at 13-11. From there, the Wesmen got to within one point, at 15-14, but a subsequent 5-1 run from Trinity Western gave the Spartans all they would need to capture and eventually win the the setat 25-18.

Winnipeg will be back on home court next Friday and Saturday against the unbeaten UBC Thunderbirds.

The No.1 ranked  Trinity Western University Spartans kept its perfect season in tact as they completed a weekend sweep of the No. 10 Winnipeg Wesmen with a 3-0 (25-19, 27-25, 25-23) win Saturday night in Langley, British Columbia.

The Spartans were led by Brendan Schmidt finished the game with 10 kills, while not committing a single attacking error, five blocks and five digs.Derek Thiessen had seven kills and added three blocks and Lucas Van Berkel had seven kills, six digs and two blocks. Setter Ben Ball had 41 assists and 11 digs.

For Winnipeg, it was Ty Loewen leading the way with 11 kills and four digs, while Devin Schmidt had seven kills and three blocks and Brendan Black had six kills, five blocks and four digs.

The win improves the Spartans record to 14-0 on the season while the loss drops Winnipeg to 6-10.

After a back and forth start to the first set, the Spartans started to pull away in the mid-stages, opening a 14-9 lead. From there, Trinity Western didn’t allow the Wesmen to get any closer than three points. With Winnipeg making it 21-18, the Spartans squashed any hopes of a Wesmen comeback as they took four of the last five points to win the set 25-19.

In the second set, it was tight throughout as neither team allowed for the opposition to take off on any sort of extended runs. With the score 18-18, Winnipeg got four of the next five points, capped by a Black kill, which gave the visitors a 21-19 edge. The Wesmen maintained that lead up until set point at 24-22. But the Spartans mounted a comeback. A kill, followed by a block tied the score at 24-24. Then, after the teams traded points, another kill made it 26-25 for Trinity Western before a service ace gave the Spartans the second set by a score of 27-25.

In the third set the Wesmen started on a tear as they built an early 13-7 advantage. Trailing by six, the Spartans got a monster kill from Brad Kufske and from there, the Spartans started rolling. Trinity Western took four straight points to make it a two-point game at 13-11.Trinity Western kept battling back and eventually tied it up 15-15. Then, after a Spartans serving error gave the Wesmen a one-point lead at the technical timeout, Trinity Western seemingly took over. The Spartans got the next three points to take an 18-16 lead.But Winnipeg came right back, taking six of the next nine points that gave the Wesmen a 22-21 lead. After that though, the Spartans went on a 4-1 run to win the third set at 25-23.capped by a, most fittingly, Schmidt and Thiessen block to win the set and the match.

Winnipeg will be at home next weekend hosting UBC on Friday and Saturday.

The No. 7 ranked Trinity Western University Spartans knocked defeated the no. 2 ranked Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (28-26, 25-10, 25-27, 28-26) Friday night in Langley, British Columbia.

The win improves the Spartans to 9-4 on the season while the loss drops the Wesmen to 12-3.

The Spartans were led by Amy Leschied’s 16 kills and five blocks. Royal Richards had 11 kills and 10 digs and Kelci French finished with a game-high 16 digs. Libero Jodi Neufeld finished with 12 digs and setter Chelsea Hudson had 36 assists.

Ozana Nikolic led the Wesmen with 16 kills and 11 digs while Lauren Sears had 15 kills and three blocks and Carleen Kruschel had nine kills and 11 digs. Setter Brittany Habing had a game-high 40 assists.

The Wesmen got off to a quick start in the first set leading 4-1 lead. The Spartans went on what would become a 10-3 run to open an 11-7 lead. The Spartans built that up to a five-point advantage at 16-11 before Winnipeg started crawling back into the set. Sparked by back-to-back Kruschel kills, the Wesmen went on a 7-2 run to knot the game 18-18.  From there it was back and forth as neither team took more than a one-point advantage until Trinity Western finished the set with a block to make it 28-26 on what was the Spartans fourth chance at set point.

With momentum garnered from the first set, the second set was all Trinity Western winning the set by a score of 25-10.

In the third set, the Wesmen responded in a big way getting off to a quick 9-3 lead. The Spartans got to within three points at 10-7 but by the technical timeout, after a Sears kill, Winnipeg had reestablished their six-point edge, 16-10. After the timeout Trinity Western mounted a come back and with the score 22-21, a Richardson ace tied it up 22-22. Then, after Spartan kill, Trinity Western took its first lead of the set and had a shot to win the set and the match at 25-24. But Winnipeg replied with three straight points to end the Spartans hopes of a comeback win and send the match to a fourth set.

In the fourth the Wesmen got off to a quick 5-2 start only to see Trinity Western earn four straight points to make it 6-5. The Spartans pushed that lead into a five-pointer at 14-9 and looked in control. But Winnipeg came right back with a 6-1 run to tie it 15-15. The Spartans then rebuilt their lead up to three points at 19-16 but Winnipeg came back again with three straight points that tied the game again, 19-19. From there, neither team was willing to give an inch as the teams went back and forth until a Nicole Bazin block gave Trinity Western a 28-26 win.

"After a terrific start, our focus started to narrow and we lost our rhythm. Trinity played an aggressive, consistent match. We made far too many unforced errors to earn a win", said Wesmen head coach Diane Scott.

The two teams will meet in a rematch Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Langley Events Centre.

The No. 1 ranked Trinity Western men’s volleyball team squeaked past the no. 10 ranked Winnipeg Wesmen  3-2 (20-25, 25-21, 25-11, 25-27, 15-10) Friday night at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, British Columbia.

The win improves the Spartans record to 13-0 while the loss drops Winnipeg to 6-9.

Steven Marshall finished the game with 20 kills, seven digs and four aces, while Brad Kufske had 17 kills and nine digs, and Branden Schmidt had eight kills and three blocks. Spartans libero Jarrod Offereins added a game-high 15 digs.

Winnipeg was led by the trio of Nathaniel Therrien, who had 12 kills and seven digs, Ty Loewen, who had 12 kills and four digs, and Brendan Black, who had 11 kills and an ace.

In the first set, the Wesmen got off to quick start, opening an early 7-4 lead. The Spartans responded with six straight points to take a 10-7 lead and momentum. But with Trinity Western still ahead by three at 18-15, the Wesmen went to work, going on a set-ending 10-2 run. Winnipeg won the opening set 25-20 and finished with a hitting percentage of .417.

In the second set, the Spartans took an early lead and never trailed. Although it was close throughout, any time the Wesmen got within a point, the Spartans got the next point. With the score 24-21, a kill from Marshall sealed the win and evened the match.

Trinity Western had a .577 attack percentage in the third and were never threatened on their way to a 25-11 set victory.

In the fourth, while it was tight throughout, this time, the Wesmen never trailed. With the score 24-21, the Spartans rallied to tie it 24-24 and then again at 25-25. But with a Spartans serving error followed by a Spartans attack error, Winnipeg took the set and forced a fifth.

In the fifth set, it was close in the early stages but that was until the Wesmen went up 6-5. That’s when the Langley Events Centre was treated to one of the longest rallies in recent memory. After a combined total of 20 digs in the rally, Kufske finally earned the point with a kill off the left side to knot the set 6-6. After that, the Spartans were never behind. With the Spartans up 10-9, Trinity Western went on a 5-1 run to end the set and the match.

The two teams will meet in a rematch Saturday night at 9:00 p.m.
