Women's Basketball vs UBC

The no. 3 ranked UBC Thunderbirds defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 65-49 Saturday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

With the victory the T-Birds improve to 10-2 on the season. Winnipeg falls to 8-6 in the Canada West Conference standings.

Zara Huntley led UBC with a game high 18 points. Alexandra Vieweg added 12 points to go along with a team high seven rebounds. Kristjana Young finished with a double-double 10 points and 11 assists.

Fifth year guard Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with 13 points and eight rebounds. Alyssa Grant added eight and Stephanie Kleysen finished with seven.

After a close opening period that finished with the T-Birds leading 14-13, UBC exploded in the second quarter outscoring Winnipeg 18-5 to take a 32-18 lead into the halftime break.

UBC finished the opening half shooting 48% from the field compared to 29% for the Wesmen.

In the second half, UBC used their first half momentum to outscore Winnipeg 14-10 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 46-28. Winnipeg made a late surge in the final half of the fourth quarter but were unable to mount their second straight comeback in as many nights.

Winnipeg will be on the road next weekend in Regina to face the unbeaten Regina Cougars (13-0). UBC will play a weekend series at home against the UBCO Okanagan Heat.

The UBC Thunderbirds held off a pesky Winnipeg Wesmen squad to record a 74-73 victory at the Duckworth Centre Saturday night in Winnipeg.

The Wesmen came within an inch of recording their second consecutive upset after beating the no. 7 ranked Victoria Vikes 75-71 Friday night.

With the win the no.3 ranked Thunderbirds improve to 10-2. The loss drops the Wesmen to 4-10.

Fifth year guard Doug Plumb led all scorers finishing with 26 points. Nathan Yu, also in his fifth year added 15 points and four assists. Malcolm Williams added 10. Kamar Burke had a monster game on the boards finishing with 17 rebounds.

Mark McNee led the Wesmen for the second consecutive night scoring 21 points. Point guard Andrew Cunningham had 17 points and eight assists. Dominique Brown finished with 16 points, including four-three pointers.

The game was dead even in the opening moments with both teams taking turns holding the lead. Winnipeg gained the upper hand early on leading 20-16 after the opening quarter. The T-Birds regrouped in the second quarter outscoring the Wesmen 18-14 to knot the score at 34-34 at halftime.

UBC was successful on 50% of their shots from the field in the opening half. Winnipeg connected on 9-of-25 (36%) but managed to stay even with the T-Birds.

UBC found a bit of breathing room in the third quarter outscoring Winnipeg 20-17 to hold a 54-51 lead after thirty minutes.

In the final quarter, UBC held the lead for the opening five minutes until the Wesmen made things interesting. A three-pointer by Dominique Brown gave the Wesmen a 66-65 lead. The teams exchanged baskets to the score of 70-70 with just over two minutes to play. A long three-pointer by Travis Krahn gave Winnipeg a 73-72 lead. After missed opportunities by both teams, Malcolm Williams drained a jump shot in the final minute to make the final score 74-73.

Winnipeg will head on the road next weekend to face the Regina Cougars. The T-Birds will face the UBC Okanagan Heat at home.

Women's Basketball vs Victoria

The Winnipeg Wesmen erased a third quarter deficit for a come from behind 72-64 victory over the University of Victoria Vikes Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg trailed 51-37 at the midway point of the third quarter.

The victory extends Winnipeg's winning streak to four games and improves their record to 8-5. The Vikes suffer their fifth loss in a row and currently sit with a record of 5-8.

Four Wesmen starters figured in double digits led by fifth year guard Amy Ogidan's double-double consisting of a game high 23 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Mackenzie Prasek, also in her fifth year added 14 points, including four-three pointers. Second year guard Stephanie Kleysen added 12 points and 16 rebounds. Alyssa Grant finished with 10.

Victoria was led by fourth year forward Chelsea McMullen's 21 points. Winnipeg native Deborah Yeboah added and Jessica Renfrew added 10. Sarah Semeniuk led the team in rebounds with 16.

One of the main differences in the contest was free throw shooting. Winnipeg connected on 19-of-20 from the charity stripe, Victoria struggled going 8-of-18 from the line.

Victoria opened the contest leading 20-18 after the opening quarter and extended their lead to 29-20 early in the second quarter. Winnipeg reeled off ten straight points near the midway pointy of the second quarter to take a 30-29 lead. The teams took turns taking the lead and after two quarters Victoria led 35-33.

The Vikes exploded out of the gate in the opening moments of the third quarter extending their lead to double-digits until the Wesmen started their come back. Winnipeg trailed 52-44 with three minutes to play and scored six unanswered points to trail 52-50 after three.

Winnipeg continued to put the pressure on the Vikes in the fourth quarter outscoring Victoria 22-12 in the final quarter.

"Our fifth year players played a great game and really showed great leadership and composure. It was a great victory and a total team effort", said Wesmen head coach Tanya McKay.

Winnipeg will host the UBC Thunderbirds Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre at 6:00 p.m.. Victoria will travel across town to take on the Manitoba Bisons.

The Winnipeg Wesmen came back from a 16 point deficit to upset the no.7 ranked University of Victoria Vikes 75-71 Friday evening in Winnipeg.

With the victory Winnipeg improves to 4-9, the Vikes fall to 10-3.

Mark McNee led the Wesmen with a game high 31 points and 12 rebounds. Benny Iko added 14 points while Travis Krahn finished with 12, including four-three pointers. Dominique Brown had 10. Andrew Cunningham finished with 10 assists.

The Vikes were led by Ryan MacKinnon's team high 26 points, including four-three pointers. Michael Acheampong added 13 points followed by Zac Andrus and Mike Berg each had 10.

After a close opening quarter that finished with Victoria leading 17-15, the Vikes outscored the Wesmen 19-13 in the second quarter to lead 36-28 at halftime.

The Vikes continued to put pressure on the Wesmen squad and opened up a double digit lead for the remainder of the third quarter. The Vikes led 60-47 after thirty minutes of play.

In the fourth quarter the Wesmen chipped away. A three pointer by Travis Krahn was part of an 11-2 run that cut the Vikes lead to 62-58. MacKinnon scored five straight points soon after to extend the Vikes lead to 67-60. Krahn nailed another three-pointer a few moments later to cut the Vikes lead to 67-65. Victoria found some breathing room at 71-65 with three minutes to play but a three pointer by Iko and a two pointer by Cunningham cut the lead to 71-70. McNee scored on a lay up with 1:55 left to give Winnipeg their first lead since the first quarter at 72-71. Victoria was unable to score on their next two possessions and Winnipeg drained three-of0four from the foul line to secure the win.

Winnipeg will host the UBC Thunderbirds Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre. Victoria will take on the Manitoba Bisons at the U of M.
