The Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the Brandon University Bobcats 71-25 in the final match of a home and home series, Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg won the opening game of the series 63-47 last night in Brandon. With the win the Wesmen improve their record to 7-5, Brandon remains winless at 0-12.

The Wesmen took control of the game early on leading 17-3 after the opening quarter and extended their lead to 32-12 at halftime. The second half was a carbon copy of the opening twenty minutes with Winnipeg dominating ,outscoring Brandon 39-13.

 Fifth year guard Amy Ogidan led Winnipeg with a game high 21 points. Second year guard Yael Kaplan added 13 while Danielle Baril finished with a double-double 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Aimee Johnston led Brandon with seven points and nine rebounds. Stephanie Haynes added six points to go along with eight rebounds.

Winnipeg will be at home next week for a pair of games. On Friday Winnipeg will host the Victoria Vikes followed by a visit by the UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday. Brandon will play host to Trinity Western on Friday and Fraser Valley on Saturday.

A quick start propelled the Winnipeg Wesmen to a 63-47 victory over the Brandon University Bobcats Thursday evening on the road in Brandon, Manitoba.

Winnipeg jumped out to an 18-2 lead in the opening six minutes of the opening quarter and never looked back.

Alyssa Grant led the Wesmen with a game high 14 points. Mackenzie Prasek added 12. Amy Ogidan and Stephanie Kleysen finished with seven each.

Jaynell Gillett led Brandon with 13 points. Amy Johnson added 10.

The second quarter was dominated by Winnipeg as they outscored Brandon 19-6 to take a commanding 37-14 lead into the halftime break. The hometown Bobcats showed some life in the third quarter outscoring the Wesmen 18-11 to cut the deficit to 48-32 after thirty minutes of play. Both teams scored 15 points in the final frame to make the final tally 63-47.

" We played well in the first half but struggled a bit on the defensive end in the second half", added Wesmen head coach Tanya McKay.

Winnipeg received a total team effort and it showed in the final stats with the Wesmen bench outscoring Brandon's by a margin of 21-10.

Winnipeg climbs above .500 with a record of 6-5. Brandon remains winless at 0-11.

The two teams will wrap up their home and home series Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre. Tip off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

Winnipeg needed a win and on this night they got one. The Wesmen won a thrilling 66-61 decision over the Brandon University Bobcats Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The Wesmen put an end to a six-game regular season winless streak and improved their record to 3-9. Brandon with the loss falls to 5-7.

Both teams took turns holding the lead in the opening quarter. The Wesmen held the lead for the opening five minutes only to see Brandon battle back to lead 17-14 after the first quarter. In the second quarter the Bobcats held their largest lead of the game at 33-25 with 2:22 left in the opening half. The resilient Wesmen team did not give up and answered the challenge in a big way. In the final 1:51, Winnipeg reeled off eight unanswered points capped off by a three pointer at the buzzer by Eric Zimmerman to tie the score at 33-33 at halftime.

In the third quarter Winnipeg stretched their lead to 51-43 late in the frame but a 7-0 run, including five points by Michael Smith left Brandon trailing 51-50 after thirty minutes. The fourth quarter was once again a close affair with the score tied on four occasions, including 61-61 with 1:56 left. A wild scramble put Brayden Duff on the line with 27 seconds left and the third year forward was good on one-of-two to give Winnipeg a 62-61 lead. Winnipeg closed out the game on successful free throws by Travis Krahn and Mark McNee to make the final tally 66-61.

Mark McNee led Winnipeg with 17 points and four steals. Andrew Cunningham finished with a double-double 12 points and a game high 14 rebounds. Dominique Brown and Travis Krahn each had 11 points.

The Bobcats were led by Donovan Gayle's game high 20 points. Michael Smith added 16. Jordan Reaves and Ali Mounir led the team in rebounds with 10 each.

"We were able to grind one out tonight with a collective group effort", said a relieved Wesmen head coach Mike Raimbault.

Winnipeg will welcome Victoria next Friday and UBC on Saturday. Brandon will play Trinity Western and Fraser Valley.

The Brandon University Bobcats defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 70-56 in the opening game of a home and home series Thursday evening in Brandon, Manitoba.



The victory improves Brandon's record to 5-6, Winnipeg's record falls to 2-9.



"We are struggling to find consistency at this point. We made some good plays, had some good looks that did not go down, but ultimately Brandon was the better team tonight", said Wesmen head coach Mike Raimbault.



Donovan Gayle led Brandon with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Ali Mounir followed with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Winnipeg native Kyle Vince added 12 points.



Winnipeg was led by Mark McNee's 17 points. Dominique Brown finished with a double-double 13 points and 10 rebounds. Andrew Cunningham added 11 points and five assists.



Brandon gained the early advantage early on leading 15-14 after the opening ten minutes. Winnipeg found their legs in the early part of the second quarter, running off nine unanswered points to lead 23-15 four minutes into the frame. Brandon fought back to tie the score with four minutes left but Winnipeg held off the charge to lead 33-31 at halftime.



The second half was a different story with Brandon outscoring the Wesmen 39-23. Winnipeg struggled from the field connecting on 8-of-29 shooting from the field.



The series between the two provincial rivals will wrap up at the Duckworth Centre on Friday night. Tip off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. The game will be carried live on TSN Radio 1290 with Paul Edmomds handling the play by play and Dave Crook adding the colour commentary.
