Krahn Golden at Canada Summer Games
Members of the University of Winnipeg Wesmen men’s and women’s volleyball teams had success at the Canada Summer Games that concluded this past weekend in Prince Edward Island.
Third year middle Alix Krahn had the most success playing a role in helping Team Manitoba beat Team Ontario (18-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-21) in the gold medal match on Saturday.
“I have to say it was an unbelievable privilege to be able to participate in the 2009 Summer Games, I consider myself very fortunate. It was awesome to have the opportunity to play in an intense and exciting environment. The best part was the way the team really came together and became a family. Winning gold was something I believed from the start we could do. There was so much intensity and the key ingredient, the amazing team chemistry on the court. I have never had so much fun playing volleyball”, added Krahn, who will now turn her focus to the upcoming Canada West season.
It was also a successful Canada Games for Ariel Smith and Lauren Sears as their native Nova Scotia squad finished the 11 team competition in fourth place.
In men’s volleyball returning Wesmen players Dan Lother, Justin Duff, Emory Wells and Marc Ross and first year player Matt Schriemer along with Eric Vanderwey, represented Team Manitoba and finished the competition in fourth place. The team was coached by former Wesmen player and assistant coach Cam Johnson.
