Saturday, January 14 Women's Volleyball at Saskatchewan

The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a weekend sweep over the Saskatchewan Huskies with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-20) victory Saturday evening in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
The no. four ranked Wesmen won the series opener on Friday night in straight sets (3-0). The win improves Winnipeg's record to 12-2, the Huskies sit at 0-12.
Fifth year middle and team captain Lauren Sears led the Wesmen with a match high 20 kills and seven blocks and three aces. Ozana Nikolic finishewd with 11 kills. Ozana Nikokic continued to shine in her first year finishing with 11 kills. Libero Tesca Andrew-Wasylik led the Wesmen with 12 digs and setter Brittany Habing finished the match with 43 assists.
Candace Hueser led Saskatchewan with 18 kills. Alex Van Dyke added 10. Kayla Tycholiz had six blocks.
Saskatchewan came out firing taking the first set 25-22 over the Wesmen. But the No. 4 ranked Wesmen made quick work of the young Huskies squad taking the next three sets 25-17, 25-16 and 25-20.
"The Huskies came to play tonight. They showed up and gave a strong effort. We were not as sharp tonight, but we found a way to re-group and gut out a win", said Wesmen head coach Diane Scott.
Winnipeg will be on the road next weekend in Langley, British Columbia for a two match set against the Trinity Western University Spartans on Friday and Saturday.
"After a positive weekend like this, we are very focused on picking up our play in the second half of the season. We have to continue to strive to be consistent and efficient every time we make a play", added Sears.

The No. 4 ranked University of Winnipeg Wesmen made quick work of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-17) victory Friday night in Saskatoon.
With the win the Wesmen improve to 11-2 on the season, while the Huskies remain winless at 0-11.
Winnipeg jumped out to a quick lead in all three sets that the Huskies just couldnt overcome. The Wesmen took a 6-1 lead to start the first set, a 9-2 lead in the second and 6-1 in the third set. The closest Saskatchewan was able to come in any of the three sets was within two in the first set after a Alex Van Dyke kill froze the Wesmen back line. But a Huskie service error gave the ball right back to the Wesmen.
"We were fairly consistent and disciplined throughout the match. We did a good job staying in the momemt. Saskatchewan is fairly physical and we had to work for our points. Saskatchewan will be better tomorrow night", said Wesmen head coach Diane Scott.
Lauren Sears compiled a match-high 16 kills for the Wesmen and Ozana Nikolic added another nine. Brittany Habing tallied 31 assists, while Tesca Andrew-Wasylik had a match-high seven digs. Sears was also strong on the net with three solo blocks and three block assists.
Candace Hueser led the Huskies with eight kills on the night, Alex Van Dyke added another six. Erin Foster dished 15 assists and added five digs. Kayla Tycholiz had a solo block and three block assists to lead the Huskies on the net.
The two teams meet again Saturday night to wrap up the weekend series.Match time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen completed the sweep of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday night with a 3-1 (28-26, 25-13, 18-25, 25-15) victory in Saskatoon.
Nathaniel Therrien was the spark for the Wesmen tallying 23 kills and two aces. He was also strong at the net with two solo blocks and four assisted blocks on the night.
With Huskies serving for game point in the first game Saturday, Therrien had a kill then a stuff block to tie it. Winnipeg won. He also led the charge to the win in set two with a kill down the line and a cross-court attack deep. With Winnipeg leading early in Game 4, Therrien had a run of five putaway shots to make it 15-8.
Winnipeg has won five of its last six regular season matches and is 6-8 on the season, while Saskatchewan falls to 1-11.
" Saskatchewan is a tough place to play. Full credit to our players for the two wins", said Wesmen head coach Larry McKay.
Matthew Stubler, Ty Loewen and Devin Schmidt added eight kills each for Winnipeg, while Stubler had 15 digs. Setter Zack Diboll finished the match with 43 assists.
Bryan Fraser and Paul Thomson recorded 11 kills each for the Huskies. Geoffrey Zerr finished with nine.
The Wesmen hit the road to face the Trinity Western University Spartans next Friday and Saturday.

With a comeback in the fifth set, the University of Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 3-2 (23-25, 25-21, 25-23, 20-25, 16-14) Friday night in Saskatoon.
Two net violations in a row by the Wesmen had given the Huskies a 7-4 lead in the fifth set. But after a timeout, the Wesmen scored the next three points to tie the game. Two Paul Thomson blocks in a row put the Huskies back ahead but Winnipeg once again tied the game at 13. The Wesmen closed the match with a 3-1 run that included a kill and a block by second year player Brendan Black.
With the win the Wesmen improve to 5-8, while the Huskies are 1-10 on the season.
The Wesmen were the first to 16 and the technical timeout in the first set but the Huskies went on a 6-2 run to take the lead at 19-18. The Huskies never looked back winning the set 25-23.
Winnipeg jumped out in front 4-1 and controlled the entire second set to a 25-21 win. Zack Diboll led the Wesmen through the set tallying five kills.
After crawling up the points, a Wesmen error gave the Huskies an 8-6 lead. The Huskies kept the lead until Matthew Stubler blocked a Geoff Zerr attack. From there Winnipeg kept the lead never going ahead by more than two points winning 25-23.
Saskatchewan led 20-14 in the fourth set before Winnipeg made a bid for a comeback pulling within 20-18 after a net violation by the Huskies. But the Huskies stayed in front and after Winnipeg missed the attack on a set the Huskies won 25-20.
Winnipeg had four players recording 10 or more kills. Devin Schmidt led the Wesmen with 13, followed by Stubler and Ty Loewen with 11 each and Black with 10. Loewen also had 15 digs in the match.
Matthew Busse finished the game with a match-high 14 kills for the Huskies. Braden McLean added another 11 and Thomson tallied 10. Jeff Grant recorded 14 digs.
The two teams meet again Saturday night . Match time is 8 p.m.
