The Wesmen gained a split in British Columbia. Winnipeg defeated the UBC Okanagan Heat 76-64 Saturday evening in Kelowna, British Columbia.
Winnipeg lost the opening game of the two game swing trip 84-61 to the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Friday night.
Second year guard Yael Kaplan led the Wesmen with a game high 23 points. Fifth year guard Amy Ogidan finished with a double-double scoring 15 points and hauling in 14 rebounds. Alyssa Grant finished with 11 points..
Madison Kaneda led the Heat with 23 points followed by Emily Kunestar with 19.
Winnipeg started the contest on fire opening up a 26-18 lead after the opening ten minutes. The Heat outscored Winnipeg 17-11 in the second quarter to trail 37-35 at halftime.
After the halftime break, the Wesmen continued to put the pressure on the Heat on both sides of the ball. Winnipeg scored 22 points in the third quarter and held the Heat to 14 points to carry a 59-49 lead into the final quarter. The Wesmen held off any challenge the Heat threw their way in the final frame to make the final tally 76-64.
The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 5-5. The Heat fall to 2-6.
The Wesmen will take on the Brandon University Bobcats in a home and home series starting Thursday night in Brandon and wrapping up next Friday night at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is 6:00 p.m.

WESMEN 70 UBC Okanagan 79 Boxscore
The UBC Okanagan Heat upended the Winnipeg Wesmen 79-70 Saturday evening in Kelowna, British Columbia.
Yassine Ghomari led the Heat with a game high 32 points, followed by Bret Macdonald with 16 and Ed Dane Medi added 11.
Winnipeg had four players figuring in double digits led by Dominique Brown's 16 points, including three-three pointers. Eric Zimmerman and Marc McNee each added 14 and Benny Iko finjished with 12 points and a team leading nine rebounds.
The Heat opened the contest leading 19-10 after the opening quarter but the lead was short lived. After the Heat maintained their nine point lead at 24-15, Winnipeg caught fire. Back-to-back three pointers by Dominique Brown combined with six straight points by Mark McNee gave Winnipeg the lead back since early in the opening quarter at 27-24. The Wesmen carried the momentum for the remainder of the half to lead 38-32 at the halftime break.
UBC Okanagan cut into the Winnipeg lead in the third quarter outscoring the Wesmen 21-17 to trail 55-53 after three quarters. The Heat took the lead back in the early stages of the fourth quarter scoring seven unanswered points in the opening moments of the quarter to lead 60-55. The Heat continued their strong shooting for the remainder of the quarter to make the final score 79-70. The Heat connected on 59% shooting from the field in the second half.
The victory improves the Heats record to 2-6. The loss by Winnipeg leaves them with a record of 2-8.
Winnipeg will head home to prepare for a home and home series against the Brandon University Bobcats starting this Thursday night in Brandon. The series wraps up on Friday night at the Duckworth Centre. Game time on Friday night is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. The game will be carried live on TSN Radio 1290 with Paul Edmonds handling the play by play and Dave Crook adding the colour commentary.

A first half shooting display lifted the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack to a 84-61 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Friday evening at the Tournament Capital Centre in Kamloops, British Columbia.
The Wolfpack put up 43 first half points, including 30 in the opening ten minutes. The three-point territory was friendly to the home side with the WolfPack draining seven-three pointers in the half.
The trio of Diane Schuetze (29 points), Jen Ju (17 points) and Tracy Kocs (14 points) combined for 60 of the Wolfpacks total points. Schuetze led the team in rebounding with eight. Ju added three-three pointers while Kocs had a pair from beyond the arc.
Third year forward Alyssa Grant led the Wesmen with 17 points, including three-three pointers. Second year guard Yael Kaplan added 12 points, two assists and four steals. First year forward Tia Coulter grabbed a game high 12 rebounds.
After a scorching opening quarter, Winnipeg outscored the WolfPack 17-13 in the second quarter to trail 43-31.
Winnipeg came out of the halftime break on a mission. Back to back three pointers by Mackenzie Prasek and Grant cut the deficit to 43-37. The momentum was short lived as Thompson Rivers outscored the Wesmen 24-11 down the stretch to open up a 67-48 lead after three quarters.
The home team maintained their double digit lead in the final quarter, outscoring Winnipeg 17-13 to make the final score 84-61.
The victory improves the WolfPacks record to 4-5, Winnipeg drops a game below .500 with an identical 4-5 record.
Winnipeg will travel tonight to Kelowna to take on the UBC Okanagan Heat on Saturday night. Game time is 8:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time)

The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 84-68 Friday evening at the Tournament Capital Centre in Kamloops, British Columbia.
Akeem Pierre led the WolfPack with a game high 23 points, including three-three pointers. Justin King added 17 points and nine rebounds.
Point guard Andrew Cunningham was Winnipegs best player finishing with 17 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, three steals in 38 minutes of playing time. Eric Zimmerman finished with a double-double 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Winnipeg started the contest on a good note leading 25-23 after a fast paced opening quarter. The WolfPack gained the edge in the second quarter outscoring the Wesmen 17-12 to take a slim 40-37 lead into the halftime break.
The Wesmen came out strong in the second half and stayed within four points of the WolfPack at 50-46 just past the midway point of the third period. The momentum Winnipeg found was short lived thanks to a 16-8 run by the WolfPack to extend their lead to double digits 66-54 after thirty minutes.
In the fourth quarter Winnipeg cut the deficit to eight points early on but Thompson Rivers went on to outscore Winnipeg 19-14 to make the final score 84-68.
The victory improves Thompson Rivers record to 5-4. Winnipeg falls to 2-7.
Winnipeg will complete their two game West Coast swing trip tonight in Kelowna against the UBC Okanagan Heat. Game time is scheduled for 10:00 p.m. (Winnipeg time)

Women's Volleyball vs McGill (non-conference)

The Winnipeg Wesmen opened up the new year with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-21, 25-21) victory over the McGill Martlets in a non-conference match Wednesday evening at the Duckworth Centre.
First year left side Ozana Nikolic continued her impressive play, leading the team with a match high 14 kills. Third year left side Carleen Kruschel finished with eight kills and four service aces. Fifth year middle Lauren Sears had seven kills and five blocks. Ellina Domnidou led the Wesmen in digs with 16.
Emily Kyte led McGill with seven kills. Genevieve Plante added six kills and a team high 13 defensive digs.
Winnipeg dominated the opening set racing out to a quick 7-2 lead and thanks to a fine serving display by Kruschel, the Wesmen led 16-7 at the technical break. Winnipeg went on to win the opening set 25-12.
The Martlets made adjustments early in the second set and held the lead all the way to technical timeout by a score of 16-14. Winnipeg scored four of the next five points to grab their first lead of the second set at 18-17. The Wesmen continued to keep the Martlets off balance winning the set 25-21.
The Wesmen completed the match with an identical 25-21 win in the third and final set.
The Wesmen will resume their second half Canada West schedule on the road in Saskatchewan against the Huskies on January 13-14. Winnipeg finished the first half schedule with a record of 10-2.

The Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the Universite de Sherbrooke Vert & Or in straight sets (25-17, 25-19, 26-24) in a non-conference match Wednesday evening at the Duckworth Centre.
Second year outside Ty Loewen led the Wesmen with 11 kills. Matthew Stubler and Brendan Black each finished with nine. Stubler had one attacking error and finished the match with a hitting percentage of .727. Fifth year libero Stephane Waldie had a match high 12 digs. Tobias Milne and Brendan Black each had four solo blocks.
Fourth year opposite Pierre Luc Lessard had a match high 13 kills to lead the Vert & Or. First year left side William Marier was next with 11. Libero Olivier Guimond led the team with nine defensive digs. Samuel Emond a fourth year middle had four solo blocks.
Winnipeg took advantage of 11 attacking errors by Sherbrooke in the opening set on their way to a 25-17 win to open the match. Sherbrooke finished the set with a hitting percentage of -.167.
The errors continued for the Vert & Or in the second set. Four errors in the opening part helped Winnipeg take a 7-3 lead early on. The Wesmen went into the technical timeout leading 16-12. Four more errors combined with kills by Stubler and Loewen helped the Wesmen win the second set 25-19. Winnipeg only committed four attacking errors in the set and had a hitting percentage of .346 in the set.
Sherbrooke was finally able to get on track in the third set building a 16-14 lead at the technical timeout and 21-18 later on. Winnipeg turned on the hitting machine late in the set, paced by a trio of kills by Ty Loewen to win the third set 26-24.
The match was the first of three between the two teams.Winnipeg and Sherbrooke will play on Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre. Match times both nights is 7:00 p.m.
