Wesmen Well Represented At Canada Summer Games

The 2009 Canada Summer Games are well underway in Prince Edward Island. The second week of the Games will be an exciting one for the University of Winnipeg Wesmen with ten Wesmen volleyball players and coaches participating.

In men’s volleyball returning players Dan Lother, Justin Duff, Emory Wells and Marc Ross will be joined by first year player Matt Schriemer and Eric Vanderwey, who will red shirt this season after transferring from Guelph. All players will be members of Team Manitoba coached by former Wesmen player and assistant coach Cam Johnson.

"These six players have been training at a high level for much of the summer.  They will return to our program as better players.  Along with the five players who played on the Provincial U19 team (Matt Stubler, Kenny McKenzie, Devin Schmidt, Dom Pereira and Jaye Burnett) it is great to see our athletes working on their skills in the off-season”, said University of Winnipeg Men’s Volleyball Head Coach Larry McKay.

The University of Winnipeg Women’s Volleyball program will have three current players participating. Third year local product Alix Krahn will wear Manitoba colors while Ariel Smith and Lauren Sears will represent their native Nova Scotia.

"We are extremely excited and proud of our University of Winnipeg Women's Volleyball Athletes who are participating in the upcoming Canada Games. Alix Krahn playing with Team Manitoba and both Ariel Smith & Lauren Sears playing for Team Nova Scotia! We wish them the best of luck competing and hope they enjoy every minute of the experience”, added University of Winnipeg Women’s Volleyball Head Coach Diane Scott.

The men’s and women’s volleyball competition will take place from Monday, August 24 – Saturday, August 29.
