Men's Volleyball vs Regina
WESMEN def Regina 3-0 (27-25, 25-22, 26-24) Match Statistics
The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a weekend sweep against the Regina Cougars with a straight sets (27-25, 25-22, 26-24) victory Saturday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Winnipeg won a five set thriller in the opening match of the weekend Friday night.
The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 4-8, Regina leaves Winnipeg with an identical 4-8 record.
Second year outside hitter Nathaniel Therrien led the Wesmen with 11 kills and nine defensive digs. Matthew Stubler added nine kills, Brendan Black had eight kills and finished the match with an impressive hitting percentage of .667 with no attacking errors.
First year right side Andrew Nelson led Regina with a match high 15 kills. Outside hitter Brody Waddell led the team with 11 defensive digs. Joel Colter was the top blocker for Regina with five.
In the early stages of the opening set both teams took turns handing over points to each other with several serving errors being committed. After the teams settled down Regina was able to take a slim 16-15 lead into the technical timeout. The teams continued to exchange points to 24-23 in Winnipeg's favor but Regina fought off a set point to tie the score at 24-24. Winnipeg was able to close out the first set at 27-25.
The second set was a carbon copy of the opening set with neither team having any breathing room. The Wesmen took the lead at the technical break 16-15 and soon after had the biggest lead of the set at 20-17. The Wesmen would go on to take control of the match winning the set 25-22.
Regina looked to gain some momentum in set number three leading 16-13 at the technical break . Winnipeg as they have done all match fought back and closed out the match with a 25-23 win in the third set.
"Regina is one of the best coached up and coming teams. To get two wins against them is a great finish to the first half of our season for our young team", said Wesmen head coach Larry McKay.
Winnipeg will next see action in the new year on January 4th in a non-conference match against Sherbrooke. The team will resume their Canada West schedule on the weekend of January 13-14 in Saskatoon to play the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. Regina will next see action on the same weekend hosting the Manitoba Bisons.

Match Statistics
The No. 4 ranked Winnipeg Wesmen picked up their 10th win of the regular season with a hard fought 3-1 (25-27, 25-23, 25-21, 25-22) victory over the Regina Cougars Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.
Winnipeg won the opening match Friday night and currently sits with a record of 10-2 in the Canada West Conference standings. Regina with the loss sits at 2-10.
The Wesmen trio of Lauren Sears, Carleen Kruschel and Ozana Nikolic all finished with a match high 14 kills. Sears also finished with six service aces and six blocks. Libero Tesca Andrew-Wasylik led the team with 17 digs. Setter Brittany Habing had 39 assists and six blocks.
Meagan Onstad and Michelle Sweeting led the Cougars with 12 kills. Chelsea Ziolkowski finished with 10. Sweeting was in on seven blocks. Rebecca Rink had a match high 20 defensive digs. Setter Tiffany Herman had 45 assists.
Regina took advantage of several Wesmen attack errors to win the opening set 27-25. Winnipeg committed 10 attacking errors in the opening frame. The Cougars had the Wesmen on the ropes to open the second set leading 8-2. Winnipeg was able to fight back and closed the gap to 16-14 at the technical timeout. The Wesmen offense came thru late in the set and were able to grab the lead at 19-17. Winnipeg eventually went on to win the second set 25-23.
The win in the second set seemed to give the Wesmen new life as they went on to win the third set 25-21 and closed out the match winning the fourth set by a score of 25-22.
The Wesmen will next see action in non conference play on Wednesday, January 4th hosting McGill. The team resumes their Canada West regular season on January 13-14 with a visit to the Saskatchewan Huskies. The Cougars will host the Manitoba Bisons in the same two day period.

Women's Volleyball vs Regina
WESMEN def Regina 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-19) Match Statistics
The no. 4 ranked Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the Regina Cougars in straight sets (25-21, 25-15, 25-19) Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The victory by the Wesmen improves their record to 9-2. Regina with the loss falls to 2-9.
First year left side Ozana Nikolic continued to impress, finishing with a match high 10 kills. Ellina Domnidou, also in her first season had seven kills and 11 defensive digs. Domnidou finished the match with one hitting error and a hitting percentage of .462. Fifth year middle Lauren Sears had six kills, three service aces and two blocks. Tesca Andrew-Wasylik in the libero position had a match high 15 digs.
The Cougars were led by fifth year left side Meagan Onstad's nine kills and 10 defensive digs. Roxanne Olynyk was next with eight kills.
The Wesmen opened the first set leading 16-11 at the technical timeout. Winnipeg continued their strong play and built a 23-16 lead late in the set. Regina was able to take advantage of a few Winnipeg attacking errors and closed the gap to 23-20. After the team exchanged points, Domnidou pounded the set one winning kill to give Winnipeg the opening set at 25-21.
In the second set Winnipeg continued to carry the play leading 6-2 early on and extending their lead to 16-10 at the technical break. The Wesmen eventually went on to win the second set 25-15.The Wesmen finished the set with only three attacking errors and a hitting percentage of .381.
Regina came out in the third set more competitive and were able to hold a 10-9 lead close to the midway point of the set. Winnipeg recovered and took a 16-12 lead at the technical timeout. Winnipeg closed out the match with a 25-19 set three win.
"We took the match one point at a time tonight. We tried to focus on our efficiency and to play in the moment. Having such great fan support tonight was great for our energy", said fifth year middle Lauren Sears.
The two teams will wrap up their respective first half Canada West schedules Saturday night in the late match scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.

In arguably one of the most exciting matches so far this season, the Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the Regina Cougars in five thrilling sets (23-25, 25-22, 25-19, 23-25, 15-13) Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre.
The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 3-8, Regina with the loss slips to 4-7.
Third year outside hitter Matthew Stubler led the Wesmen with 18 kills. Brendan Black had a strong match with 15 kills, seven blocks and two aces. Black finished the match with a hitting percentage of .538. Ty Loewen and Devin Schmidt had 12 and 11 kills respectively. Setter Zack Diboll had 52 assists to go along with a team high 11 defensive digs.
The Cougars were led by first year right side hitter Andrew Nelson's match high 26 kills. Brody Waddell a fifth year outside hitter was next with 13 kills. Andre Borgeaud had 12 digs to lead Regina. Setter Caleb Eschbach finished with 56 assists.
In a tight first set where neither team led by more than four points, the Cougars gained the early edge leading 16-14 at the technical break on their way to a 25-23 opening set win.
Winnipeg stormed back in the second winning the set by a score of 25-22. The Wesmen finished the second set with a hitting percentage of .464.In the third set the Wesmen raced out to an 8-2 lead early on and maintained the lead at the set break leading 16-10. Regina committed three service errors down the stretch which helped Winnipeg win the third set 25-19 and a 2-1 lead in the match.
In set number four, the Wesmen looked for the finishing punch early on racing out to a 7-2 lead only to see the Cougars battle back to hold a 16-14 lead at the technical break. Winnipeg did not give up and went on a rally of their own to push the score to 23-22. Regina responded with back to back kills by Waddell and Nelson combined with a Wesmen attacking error to win the set 25-23 and forcing a fifth set.
It was only fitting that the final set be as close as the previous four. The teams exchanged points all the way to 12-12 when kills by Matthew Stubler and Zack Diboll pushed the lead to 14-12. Regina got the next point but soon after a thunderous kill by Stubler ended the match with Winnipeg winning the final set 15-13.
The two teams will continue their battle Saturday night in the early match of the evening. Start time at the Duckworth Centre is 6:00 p.m.
