Women's Basketball vs Manitoba

A second half combination of hot shooting and strong defensive play propelled the Winnipeg Wesmen to a 73-52 victory over the Manitoba Bisons Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg exploded for 42 second half points while holding the Bisons to only 20 points in the final 20 minutes of play.  Manitoba went into the halftime break leading 33-30.

Second year guard Yael Kaplan led the Wesmen with 21 points. Fifth year guard Amy Ogidan scored 15 points and grabbed a game high nine rebounds. Third year forward Alyssa Grant finished with 12 points.

Second year forward Allison Balasko led Manitoba with 21 points, including 13-of-15 from the free throw line. Melanie Edel added 12 points. Vanessa DeVries led Manitoba in rebounding with eight.

Winnipeg had a rough start to the game connecting on 30% of their shots from the field in the opening half but were only down by three points at the break.

The Wesmen offensive show outscored Manitoba 26-6 in the third quarter to carry a 59-36 lead after three quarters. Winnipeg outscored Manitoba 16-14 in the fourth to make the final score 72-53. Winnipeg's strong defensive play held Manitoba to 14% shooting in the second half.

The victory snaps a four game losing streak for the Wesmen and improves their record to 3-4. Manitoba sits with an identical record of 3-4.

The teams will play their final game before the holiday break next Thursday night at the University of Manitoba in the basketball portion of the Duckworth Challenge. Game time is 6:00 p.m.

WESMEN 70  Manitoba 87 Game Statistics

The Manitoba Bisons defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 87-70 Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Manitoba built an early 36-23 lead at halftime and had a strong second half connecting on 69% of their shots while outscoring Winnipeg 51-47.

Fourth year guard Jonar Huertas led Manitoba with a game high 25 points, including three-three pointers. Stepahan Walton added 18 and Kurtis Sansregret scored 15 points. Sansregret and Kevin Oliver led the team in rebounding with nine each.

Fourth year forward Benny Iko led the Wesmen with a double-double 14 points and a game high 10 rebounds. Fifth year guard James Horaska added 13 points.

The Bisons held the lead at 19-12 after the opening half and went on to outscore a struggling Wesmen team 17-11 in the second quarter to take a 13 point lead into the halftime break. Winnipeg struggled from the field in the opening half connecting on 8-of-31 for 26%.

Winnipeg played a better second half but Manitoba answered almost every Wesmen basket with one of their own to claim the victory on this night.

The win improves Manitoba's record to 3-4, Winnipeg falls to 2-5.

The teams will play their final game before the holiday break next Thursday night at the University of Manitoba in the basketball portion of the Duckworth Challenge. Game time is 8:00 p.m.
