The Calgary Dinos completed a two match sweep over the Winnipeg Wesmen with a straight sets (25-22, 25-13, 25-21) victory Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The number four ranked Dinos defeated the Wesmen Thursday night in four tough sets.
Calgary built an early 8-4 lead in the first set but Winnipeg was able to keep pace with the Dinos trailing by a pair of points, 16-14 at the technical timeout. Calgary eventually went on to win the opening set 25-22. Calgary finished the opening set with a hitting percentage of .436.In the second set Calgary jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead and Winnipeg was unable to recover with the Dinos winning the set by a score of 25-13. The Wesmen started the third set on a positive note leading 5-1 early on. Calgary battled back to take a 16-12 lead at the technical break and soon after went on to win the third set 25-21.
Fourth year left side Chris Hoag led Calgary with a match high 13 kills. Levi Nutma added 11 kills. Jay Blankeau and Allen Meek led the team in digs with nine each.
The Wesmen were led by second year outside Nathaniel Therrien's seven kills. Matthew Stubler added six. Libero Stephane Waldie had a match high 12 digs.
"We just got beat by a very good team this evening", said Wesmen head coach Larry McKay.
The victory improves Calgary's record to 3-3, Winnipeg falls to 1-5.
Calgary will be home next weekend against the Brandon Bobcats. Winnipeg will travel to Edmonton to take on the Alberta Golden Bears next Friday and Saturday.

The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a weekend sweep over the Calgary Dinos with a dramatic 3-2 (25-22, 25-16, 21-25, 22-25, 15-12) victory Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The Wesmen came into the two match series ranked number nine in the country, beat Calgary in straight sets Thursday night.
Winnipeg came out strong winning the opening two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-16. Calgary mounted a comeback winning the third set 25-21 and continued to put the pressure on the Wesmen winning the fourth set 25-22. In the fifth set Calgary carried their momentum to build a 8-4 lead as the teams traded benches. The Wesmen reeled off four straight points to tie the score at 8-8. After an exchange of points to knot the score at 9-9, Winnipeg went on the attack once again scoring three straight points to hold a 12-9 lead late in the set. Calgary fought back to close the gap to 12-11 but a pair of kills by Ozana Nikolic and one by Lauren Sears closed out the fifth set 15-12 in Winnipeg's favor.
"We showed grit once again by digging deep and finding our fight to take back the match. Winning in three would have been nice but having to go the distance showed our maturity as a team", said Wesmen head coach Diane Scott.
First year left side Ozana Nikolic led the Wesmen with a match high 21 kills. Lauren Sears had 13 kills and seven service aces, one off from tying the Wesmen Women's Volleyball team record for most aces in a match. Nan Callander holds the record with eight that she accomplished three times. Libero Tesca Andrew-Wasylik led the Wesmen with a match high 24 kills. Setter Brittany Habing had 54 assists.
Andrea Price led Calgary with 18 kills and 18 defensive digs. Lindsey Doland had 15 kills to go along with 13 digs. Setter Sarah Lacny had 49 assists.
Winnipeg improves their record to 5-1 and will be on the road next Friday and Saturday in Edmonton against the Alberta Pandas. Calgary now 2-4 will host the Brandon Bobcats for a two match series.

The Winnipeg Wesmen extended their winning streak to four with an impressive straight sets victory over the Calgary Dinos (25-18, 25-19, 25-20) Thursday night in Winnipeg.
The two teams came out battling in the opening set exchanging leads and points to tie score of 15-15. The tide turned in Winnipeg's favor shortly after outscoring the Dinos 10-3 down the stretch to win the opening set 25-18. The Wesmen carried the play in the early stages of the second set scoring eight of the first ten points and maintained their lead to 16-10 at the technical timeout. Winnipeg would go on to take control of the match winning the second set 25-19. Winnipeg's dominance continued in the third set as the Wesmen built a 16-9 lead to the break and closed out the match winning the set 25-20.
"Tonight was another step towards the team we are striving to be. We are growing the trust between us and working on our consistency", added fifth year middle and team captain Lauren Sears.
Sears finished the match with nine kills and a team leading four blocks. First year left side led the Wesmen with a match high 12 kills. Nikolic and Tesca Andrew-Wasylik shared the team lead in digs with 13.
Fifth year middle Melanie Miazga led Calgary with nine kills. Lindsay Doland added eight kills and seven defensive digs.
"I felt we did a decent job coming out of the gate, we served tough which put Calgary on their heels. We performed well as a team most of the time. We have to be prepared as Calgary will be better tomorrow night", said Wesmen head coach Diane Scott.
The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 4-1, Calgary falls below .500 at 2-3. The two teams will wrap up their two match set Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

The two Canada West Conference rivals came out battling in the opening set both hitting above the .300 mark for the set. There were only seven attacking errors between the teams in the first set with Calgary taking the opening set 25-22. The second set was another close affair with the Wesmen clinging to a 16-15 lead at the technical timeout. Winnipeg built a lead to 20-17 but Calgary came back late in the set winning by an identical score of 25-22. In the third set the two teams battled to 8-8 when the Wesmen went wild scoring eight of nine points to hold a 16-9 lead at the timeout. Winnipeg got back into the match with a convincing 25-13 win in set number three. The fourth set was another battle with both teams fighting and clawing for every point. Calgary put the match away winning the fourth set by a score of 25-23.
Fifth year right side Allen Meek led the Dinos with a match high 22 kill. Chris Hoag had 10 kills to go along with 10 defensive digs. Trent Monagle finished with four blocks.
Third year outside Matthew Stubler led the Wesmen with 14 kills and 11 defensive digs.Second year middle Brendan Black had a strong match at the net with five blocks.
" We showed improvement in some areas this match. Overall Calgary was better and we will try to be more consistent tomorrow night", said Wesmen head coach Larry McKay.
The victory improves Calgary's record to 2-3, Winnipeg drops to 1-4.
The two teams will do battle on Friday night to wrap up the two match series. Match time is 6:00 p.m.
