The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 75-51 in a Canada West Conference game Saturday night in Abbotsford, British Columbia.
The Cascades started out strong and quickly established the lead while the defense went right back to work holding the Wesmen to seven first quarter points. In the second quarter, Winnipeg came to life outscoring the Cascades 18-12 to tie the score at 25-25 at the halftime break. The second half belonged to the Cascades as they outscored Winnipeg 50-26 in the final twenty minutes.
The Cascades were led by Nicole Wierks with a team high 17 points. Kayli Sartori and Aieisha Luyken each added 13 points and Tessa Klassen rounded out the Cascades in double figures with 12 points. Sarah Wierks led all Cascades with 12 rebounds.
Winnipeg's top scorers were Tia Coulter and Amy Ogidan with nine points each. Danielle Baril pulled down 7 rebounds for Winnipeg.
The victory improves Fraser Valley's record to 2-2, Winnipeg also sports a record of 2-2.
The Wesmen will be back on home court next Friday and Saturday against the Alberta Pandas. Game time on both nights is 6:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 89-69 Saturday night in Abbotsford, British Columbia.
The Cascades started strong in the opening quarter leading 22-16 after the opening ten minutes and scored 25 points in the second quarter to take a 47-35 lead into the halftime break. In the second half, UFV continued to put the pressure on the Wesmen outscoring Winnipeg 42-34 to make the final tally 89-69.
Fraser Valley was led by Michael James with 18 points. Jasper Moedt added 17 points and 5 rebounds and Joel Friesen finished with 12 points and a team leading eight rebounds.
Winnipeg was led by Travis Krahn with a team high 17 points. Benny Ikofinished with a double-double 13 points and 13 rebounds.
The victory pushes the Cascades record to 3-1, the Wesmen fall to 1-3.
Winnipeg will next see action next Friday and Saturday hosting the Alberta Golden Bears at the Duckworth Centre. Tip off on both nights is 8:00 p.m.

The Trinity Western University Spartans beat the Winnipeg Wesmen 71-60 Friday night in Langley, British Columbia.
The Spartans overcame a rocky first quarter, one that ended with them trailing 20-12, to produce dominant second and third frames before hanging on for the win in the fourth quarter. After Winnipeg lit the Spartans up for four 3-pointers in the first quarter, the Spartans responded with six long-balls of their own in the second quarter to build a five point halftime lead and never trailed the rest of the way.
The Spartans had four players hit double-digit points with Holly Strom leading the way with 14 while Sarah Cleveland had 13. Tiffany Olsen had a game-high eight rebounds to go along with her 11 points.
For Winnipeg, Amy Ogidan had a game-high 26 points while Tia Coulter added 10 points.
The win improves the Spartans record to 2-1 on the season while Winnipeg falls to 2-1.
Winnipeg will take on the Fraser Valley Cascades on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.(Wpg Time)

The Trinity Western University Spartans hung on for a 78-77 win over the Winnipeg Wesmen Friday night in Langley, British Columbia. at the Langley Events Centre.
In what was a turnover and foul-plagued game, the Spartans built a 14-point third quarter advantage and then, after a scrappy Wesmen side got back in the contest, managed to escape with a win after Winnipegs Dominque Brown missed a jumper at the buzzer.
The Spartans were led by Tristan Smith, who had 22 points and eight assists, Calvin Westbrook, who had 21 points, and Sean Peter, who had 18 points and nine rebounds.
Winnipeg was led by Dominique Brown's 21 points while Travis Krahn had 15 points and Brayden Duff added 12 points.
The win improves the Spartans record to 1-2 on the year while Winnipeg falls to 1-2.

Early in the third quarter, the Spartans started to take over as they opened the second half with a 13-4 run that gave them a 48-34 lead midway through the frame.
The determined Wesmen squad did not give up. A three pointer by Travis Krahn sparked Winnipegs charge and the Wesmen rolled from there, outscoring Trinity Western 15-6 to end the third quarter and only trail by seven heading into the final 10 minutes.From there Winnipeg kept coming and 2:08 into the fourth quarter, a 3-pointer from Brown gave the Wesmen their first lead of the game, 58-56. Soon after that Winnipeg Kelvin Smith knocked down a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to make it 78-77 for Trinity Western but Winnipeg fell short as Browns jumper missed at the horn.
