Women's Basketball vs Lethbridge
WESMEN 61 Lethbridge 51 Game Statistics
The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a weekend sweep over the Lethbridge Pronghorns after posting a 61-51 victory Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Winnipeg (2-0) won the opening game of the weekend series 63-57 Friday night.
It was a total team effort with all five Wesmen starters scoring in double digits. Stephanie Kleysen led the way with a double-double 12 points, 12 rebounds. Mackenzie Prasek and Alyssa Grant had 11 each. Tia Coulter and Amy Ogidan finished with 10 points apiece.
Lauren Taal was the top scorer for the Pronghorns finishing with 13 points. Natalie Nichols, Kim Veldman and Deanna Dotts all finished with 10 points. Nichols was the games top rebounder with 14.
Winnipeg was in complete control of the game in the first half leading 20-13 after the opening ten minutes. The Wesmen took control of the game in the second quarter outscoring Lethbridge 25-9 to take a commanding 45-22 lead into the halftime break. The Wesmen's strong outside shooting was evident in the first half connecting on 6-of-11 from three point territory.
Lethbridge fought back in the third quarter outscoring Winnipeg 14-5 in the opening six minutes to cut the Wesmen lead to 50-36. The Wesmen held a 52-39 lead after thirty minutes. The Pronghorns managed to cut the Wesmen lead to seven points on a few occasions in the fourth quarter but Winnipeg came thru with clutch baskets down the stretch to secure the win.
Winnipeg will head out on the road for a pair of games starting next Friday night in Langley, BC against the Trinity University Spartans and the following night in Abbotsford against the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades. Lethbridge (0-2) will host UBC-Okanagan next Friday and Thompson Rivers on Saturday.

WESMEN 69 Lethbridge 68 Game Statistics
The Lethbridge Pronghorns gained a weekend split in dramatic fashion defeating the Winnipeg Wesmen 69-68 in a barn burner Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The Pronghorns who dropped the opening game 74-71 Friday night, erased a seven point halftime deficit for the victory.
Daryl Cooper led the Pronghorns with 16 points. Dominyc Coward finished with a double-double 14 points and 10 rebounds. Terrance Blake added 10 points.
The Wesmen were led by Mark McNee's game high 18 points. Benny Iko had a double-double of his own finishing with 15 points, 10 rebounds and was a perfect 4-for-4 from three point territory. Dominique Brown had 11 points.
Winnipeg had the lead early on in the contest leading 19-18 after the opening quarter. In the second quarter both teams exchanged baskets and key defensive stops in a fast paced opening seven minutes. A three pointer by Alex Fletcher gave the Pronghorns the lead at 29-27 with under three minutes to play in the opening half. Winnipeg responded in a big way scoring nine unanswered points to take a 36-29 lead into the halftime break.
Lethbridge outscored the Wesmen 20-13 in the third quarter to tie the score at 49-49 after thirty minutes. The teams took turns holding slim leads in a wild fourth quarter. A McNee free throw with 1:10 left tied the score at 68-68. Coward hit one-of-two free throws to give Lethbridge a 69-68 lead with 26 seconds left. A Winnipeg turnover and two missed free throws by Derek Waldner with eight seconds left gave the Wesmen a chance to win the game but Eric Zimmerman's shot at the buzzer bounced off the rim to make the final score 69-68 for the Pronghorns.

It was not easy but the Winnipeg Wesmen battled in a 63-57 victory over the Lethbridge Pronghorns Friday night in the regular season opener for both teams at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Winnipeg trailed 17-12 after the opening quarter but were sparked by a 15-0 run midway thru the second quarter to take a 31-30 lead at the halftime break. Lethbridge cut into the Wesmen lead in the second half but Winnipeg held off the charge for the regular season opening victory.
Stephanie Kleysen led the Wesmen with 16 points, including 14 in the second half and nine rebounds. Yael Kaplan added 14 and fifth year guard Amy Ogidan scored 12 points while grabbing nine rebounds.
Lauren Taal led the Pronghorns with 12 points. Katlyn Olsen and Kim Veldman added 11apiece. Natalie Nichols hauled in a game high 11 rebounds.
" We had a rocky start but found our groove in the second half and came together as a team", added Wesmen guard Stephanie Kleysen.
Winnipeg (1-0) and Lethbridge (0-1) will wrap up their two game series Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

A fourth quarter rally lifted the Winnipeg Wesmen to a dramatic 74-71 victory over the Lethbridge Pronghorns in the regular season opener for both sides Friday night in Winnipeg.
Winnipeg trailed 66-59 with over four minutes to play and soon afterwards regrouped scoring 12 unanswered points to take the lead and close out the game. Eric Zimmerman's two-three pointers highlighted the rally.
"We were very fortunate to pick up the win tonight", said Wesmen head coach Mike Raimbault. "I expect tomorrow's game to be a hard fought affair".
Zimmerman finished the game with a game high 27 points, including three-three pointers. Dominique Brown added 15 and Mark McNee finished with 10. Guard Craig Sharpe led Winnipeg on the boards with seven rebounds.
Five Lethbridge players scored in double digits with Dominyc Coward and Logan Reiter scoring 12 each. Daryl Cooper and Alex Fletcher scored 11 while Morgan Duce finished with 10.
Game time Saturday night is 8:00 p.m. for the final game of the regular season opening series at the Duckworth Centre.

Match Statistics
The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a home and home series sweep with a convincing straight sets (25-12, 25-14, 25-17) victory over the Brandon University Bobcats Friday night in Brandon.
Winnipeg (3-1) had an easy time in the first winning the opening set 25-12 and carried the momentum into the second set and taking control of the match with a 25-14 set two win. The Wesmen closed out the match winning the third set 25-17. The Wesmen finished the match with an impressive hitting percentage of .411.
"We played a very consistent match tonight. Brandon passed much better and came out strong. We had to be be disciplined and ready for their A game. I was happy with our composure and play to win attitude", said Wesmen head coach Diane Scott.
Third year left side Carleen Kruschel led the Wesmen with 13 kills and 13 defensive digs. First year left side Ozana Nikolic continued her strong play with 10 kills. Erika Buchanan also had 10 kills to go along with three blocks. Setter Brittany Habing finished with 45 assists.
Meaghan Robertson led Brandon with 10 kills. Jaryn Ruether was next with seven and Chloe Reimer led the Bobcats with 10 defensive digs.
"We really cleaned our game up from the other night, we played together as a team and did not let them get on runs by minimizing our own errors", said Wesmen setter Brittany Habing.
Winnipeg currently riding a three match winning streak will host the Calgary Dinos next Thursday and Friday at the Duckworth Centre. Brandon (0-4) will entertain Trinity Western University for a pair of matches.

The Brandon Bobcats fought back to earn a 3-1 (26-28, 25-13, 25-18, 25-19) victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen in the second match of a home and home series Friday night in Brandon.
Brandon dropped a close and entertaining opening set by a score of 28-26 but rallied to win the next three by scores of 25-13, 25-18 and 25-19)
"Brandon was better tonight and we were unable to match their aggressive play:, said Wesmen head coach Larry McKay.
Ben Glue led the Bobcats with a match high 21 kills. Paul Robidoux had 15 kills and 12 defensive digs. Jonathan Sloane was a presence at the net with nine blocks.
Matthew Stubler led Winnipeg with 18 kills followed by Nathaniel Therrien with 8. Stephane Waldie had 10 digs and Brendan Black was in on four blocks.
The victory improves Brandon's record to 1-3, the loss drops Winnipeg's record to 1-3. Winnipeg will head home to prepare to host the Calgary Dinos Thursday and Friday at the Duckworth Centre. The Bobcats will play host the Trinity University Spartans for a two match set.

The Winnipeg Wesmen were victorious in their regular season home opener. The No.8-ranked Wesmen defeated the Brandon University Bobcats in straight sets (25-20, 25-19, 25-22) Thursday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Winnipeg (2-1) used a 7-0 run midway thru the opening set to pace them to a 25-20 win in the opening set.
In the second set Winnipeg's middles Lauren Sears and Erika Buchanan's strong play at the net led the Wesmen to a 16-12 lead at the technical timeout. After the break first year left side Ozana Nikolic crushed six kills down the stretch to lead Winnipeg to a 25-19 win in set number two.
Brandon made a valiant effort in the third set leading 16-14 at the technical break only to see the Wesmen storm back to win the final set of the match by a score of 25-22.
" We are happy to come away with the win but were not satisfied. We are working on our consistency as a group and this will be one of many positive steps we will take to improve this year", said fifth year middle and team captain Lauren Sears.
Nikolic led the Wesmen with a match high 14 kills. Sears finished with 11 kills and five blocks. Libero Tesca Andrew-Wasylik led the team with 16 digs. Setter Brittany Habing dished out 32 assists.
Meaghan Robertson led Brandon with eight kills. Jaryn Ruether had seven kills and 13 defensive digs.
"I am very pleased to have won our home opening match. It was a good effort across the board by the entire group. Brittany Habing did a good job spreading the offense around, added Wesmen head coach Diane Scott.
Winnipeg (2-1) will travel to Brandon (0-3) on Friday to wrap up the home and home series. Match time in Brandon is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

The Winnipeg Wesmen knocked off the No. 9 ranked Brandon Bobcats 3-1 (25-1721-25, 25-17, 25-23) in the team's regular season home opener at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Winnipeg (1-2) controlled the match off the bat winning the opening set 25-17. Brandon fought back to win the second set 25-21 but Winnipeg continued their impressive play winning the third set 25-17 and closing out the match with a 25-23 win in set number four.
Ty Loewen led the Wesmen with 17 kills, hitting an impressive .395. Brendan Black had 13 kills and three blocks, Devin Schmidt had 12 kills and four blocks. Libero Stephane Waldie led the team with 13 digs and Zack Diboll had 43 assist and 12 digs.
Jonathan Sloane paced Brandon with 13 kills. Paul Robidoux was next with 10. Scott Neufeld was top's in digs with 13, setter Garrett Popplestone added 39 assists.
"Our middle blockers played a strong match this evening. The serve receivers did a good job getting the ball to our settters. Zack Diboll played a good match for us this night", said Wesmen head coach Larry McKay.
The Wesmen (1-2) will head west to Brandon for Friday night's rematch against the Bobcats (0-3). Match time in Brandon is scheduled for 7:45 p.m.
