The Winnipeg Wesmen came back from an 0-2 deficit to defeat the UBC Okanagan Heat 3-2 (21-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-22, 15-7) Saturday evening in Kelowna, British Columbia.
Third year left side Carleen Kruschel led the Wesmen with 17 kills, 24 digs and a pair of blocks. First year right side Ozana Nikolic had 15 kills. Fifth year middle Lauren Sears had 16 kills and Erika Buchanan finished with 10 kills and four blocks.
Outside hitter Myrte Schon led the Heat with 14 kills while fellow outside hitter Alex Basso had 13 kills.
"This was a much better match for our team tonight, we gained our rhythm and confidence with each point. I was very pleased and proud how the team responded to the challenge, we took another step forward", said Wesmen head coach Diane Scott.
Winnipeg (1-1) will next see action in their regular season home opener against the Brandon University Bobcats on Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre. Match time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

The UBC Okanagan Heat defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-15, 26-24) Saturday night in Kelowna, British Columbia.
Nate Speijer and Riley McFarland let the Heat with 16 kills, 10 digs apiece.
Nathaniel Therrien and Matt Stubler led the Wesmen with 11 kills each. Stephane Waldie finished with 16 digs and Brendan Black was in on five blocks.
The teams came out battling in the first set knotted at 10-10 towards the midway point. The Heat took a 16-14 lead at the technical break and extended their lead to five points and their largest lead of the set at 19-14. Winnipeg closed the gap to 23-21 but the Heat scored the final two points to win the set 25-21.
In the second set the Wesmen jumped out to a 10-7 lead and thanks to a trio of Heat errors, the Wesmen extended their lead to 14-7. The Heat would not get any closer than four points as Winnipeg evened the match winning the second set 25-21.
The Heat were all business in the third set jumping out to a quick 16-7 lead at the technical timeout and never were threatened winning the set 25-15 to take a two sets to one lead in the match.
After trailing for the first part of the fourth set, Winnipeg battled back to take a 16-13 lead at the technical break. The Heat did not roll over and continued to put pressure on the Wesmen late in the set with the score at 22-22. The teams traded points to 24-24 when the Heat took advantage of two consecutive errors by the Wesmen to win the fourth set 26-24 and the match three sets to one.
"We played better tonight for a set and a half. Our fourth set comeback showed character", said Wesmen head coach Larry McKay
Winnipeg (0-2) will head home to prepare for their home opener of the regular season next Thursday night against the Brandon University Bobcats. Match time at the Duckworth Centre is 7:30 p.m.

The UBC Okanagan Heat defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (25-20, 26-24, 18-25. 26-24) in the regular season opening match for both sides Friday evening in Kelowna, British Columbia.
Alex Basso led the Heat with 14 kills. Myrte Schon and Jill Festival each finished with 10 kills. Lena Schmidt was the leader in digs with a match high 17 defensive digs.
Carleen Kruschel led the Wesmen with 15 kills, Lauren Sears had 11. Setter Brittany Habing finished with 40 assists. Tesca Andrew-Wasylik finished with 14 digs and Erika Buchanan had five blocks.
Winnipeg had things going their way in the opening set leading 8-3 early on and 16-14 at the technical break. The Heat closed the gap to 19-19 late in the set and soon after went on a late run to win the opening set 25-20.
In the second set Winnipeg once again held the early lead at 10-6. After a timeout the Heat scored five unanswered points to take the lead at 11-10. The Heat led 16-15 at the technical and eventually went on to win set number two 26-24.
The Wesmen were able to hold on to their lead in the third set. Winnipeg led 16-11 at the technical break and got themselves back in the match winning the third set 25-18.
In the fourth set the Heat grabbed an early 9-4 lead but Winnipeg regrouped in a big way scoring eight of the next nine points to take a 12-10 lead. UBC regrouped late in the set and went on to win the match with a 26-24 win in the fourth set.
"We played well at times but ideally made far too many unforced errors in bunches. The Heat played a very disciplined match. We will grow and learn from this", added Wesmen head coach Diane Scott.

The Winnipeg Wesmen dropped a 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 30-28, 25-20) regular season opening decision to the UBC Okanagan Heat Friday night in Kelowna, British Columbia.
Nate Speijer led the Heat with a match high 28 kills. Riley McFarland added 13 kills and Jeremy Fostvelt finished with 16 defensive digs.
Third year middle Devin Schmidt led the Wesmen with 12 kills, Nathaniel Therrien added nine. Setter Zack Diboll had 40 assists and Matthew Stubler led the team with 15 digs.
Winnipeg started the match on the right foot leading 16-12 at the technical timeout of the opening set. The Wesmen continued their impressive play and won the opening set 25-19.
The Heat took advantage of 10 Winnipeg errors in the second set and finished with an attack percentage of .345 on the way to winning the second set by a score of 25-21.
In a thrilling third set Winnipeg jumped out to a lead of 16-12 at the set break. The two teams battled all the way to 24-24 and 28-28 late in the set when the Heat closed out the set on a kill by Speijer followed by a service ace to win the third set 30-28.
The Heat carried their momentum into set number four and closed out the match winning the set by score of 25-20.
"Our team had opportunities to score more tonight but UBCO was better after the first set. We need to improve in all areas", added Wesmen head coach Larry McKay.
