Winnipeg 85   Waterloo 75

A strong second half lifted the Winnipeg Wesmen to an 85-75 victory over the Waterloo Warriors in the opening game of the Pembina Chrysler Invitational Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg trailed 40-35 at halftime but regrouped and went on to outscore the Warriors 50-35 in the second half.

Five Wesmen players scored in double digits led by Benny Iko's 18 points. Mark McNee added 15, Eric Zimmerman had 12, Dominique Brown finished with 11 and Kelvin Smith contributed 10. Iko led the Wesmen in rebounds with nine.

Cam McIntyre led the Warriors with a game high 24 points, including five-three pointers. Zach Angelini added 13, Wayne Bridge had 12 and Brendan Smith finished with 11. Justin Johnson led the team in rebounds with eight.

Both teams were strong on the boards finishing with 17 rebounds each.

Winnipeg (1-0) will take on the Brandon Bobcats Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. Waterloo (0-1) will play the Manitoba Bisons at 8:00 p.m.

Manitoba 90   Brandon 83

Stephan Walton scored a team high 26 points to lead the Manitoba Bisons to a 90-83 victory over the Brandon Bobcats Friday night at the Pembina Chrysler Invitational in Winnipeg.

Aside from Walton, Manitoba had four players scoring in double digits. Xavier Smith added 17, Tanner Draward had 14, Braedon Speer had a double-double 13 points and 12 rebounds. Marko Milosevic also scored 13.

Emerick Xavier led Brandon with a game high 28 points, 17 rebounds. Ali Mounir had 12 points to go along his 13 rebounds. Winnipeg native Kyle Vince added 11.

Manitoba led at halftime 48-44 and found some breathing room after the third quarter, outscoring Brandon 24-16 to open up a 72-60 lead after thirty minutes.

Manitoba (1-0) will take on Waterloo (0-1) in the late game at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday. Brandon (0-1) will face the host Winnipeg Wesmen (1-0) in the early game at 6:00 p.m.

A total team effort and some clutch shooting lifted the Winnipeg Wesmen to an 81-79 victory over the Brandon Bobcats at the 2011 Pembina Chrysler Men's Basketball Tournament Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.

Five Wesmen players scored in double figures and as a team Winnipeg shot an impressive 45% from the field.

Mark McNee and Eric Zimmerman shared the team lead in scoring with 17 points each. Dominique Brown finished with 16. Benny Iko and Travis Krahn each scored 10. Iko led Winnipeg with 10 rebounds to complete his double-double.

Kyle Vince led Brandon with 21 points, including six-three pointers. Ali Mounir had 11 and Ilarion Bonhomme had 10. Jordan Reaves hauled in a game high 12 rebounds.

The teams shot the lights out in a fast paced opening ten minutes with Brandon holding a slim 27-24 lead. The Wesmen had a strong second quarter outscoring Brandon 18-14 to take a 42-41 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Both teams opened the second half taking turns scoring and after thirty minutes the game was still close by a score of 66-65 in Winnipeg's favor.

In the late stages of the fourth quarter Brandon held a late 79-75 lead when Wesmen guard Travis Krahn hit a three-pointer with 40 seconds left to cut Brandon's lead to 79-78. Brown hit a shot with 17 seconds followed by a McNee free throw to make the final score 81-79.

Winnipeg finishes the two day tournament with a perfect 2-0 record.

" I am very proud of our collective efforts this weekend. We still need to work on some things but this weekend was a great experience for our group" added Wesmen head coach Mike Raimbault.

Winnipeg will wrap up their non-conference schedule next weekend south of the border with games against Valley City State and Jamestown on Friday and Saturday.

Second year guard Mike Wright scored a game high 27 points to lead the Waterloo Warriors to a 89-77 victory over the Manitoba Bisons Saturday night at the Pembina Chrysler Men's Basketball Tournament in Winnipeg.

Wright finished the game 12-of-21 from the field and also dished out five assists to lead the Warriors.

Cam McIntyre added 16 points, Andrew Melbourne finished with 12. Brendan Smith hauled in a game high 11 rebounds.

Jonar Huertas led the Bisons with 19 points, including five-three pointers, Stephan Walton added 16 points and dished out 10 assists, Xavier Smith and Tanner Draward each scored 12.

Waterloo held a slim 38-36 lead at the halftime break and took control in the second half.

The Warriors outscored Manitoba 51-41 and connected on 55% from the field in the final 20 minutes to take control of the game.
