Women's Volleyball vs Manitoba "Gold Medal Match - lea Marc VB Challenge
WESMEN def Manitoba 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 17-25,25-18,15-11)
The Winnipeg Wesmen captured the gold medal at the 2011 lea Marc Volleyball Challenge with a dramatic 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 17-25,25-18,15-11) victory over the Manitoba Bisons Sunday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre.
Fifth year middle Lauren Sears was named the recipient of the Nikki Redekop Award as Tournament MVP. Brittany Habing and Tesca Andrew-Wasylik were named to the Tournament All-Star Team.
Both teams came out fighting in the opening set, exchanging points to a dead even score of 12-12. Strong blocking by the Wesmen helped the home team to a 16-14 lead at the timeout. Winnipeg carried the play and built a 23-19 lead only to see Manitoba reel six straight points to win the opening set 25-23.
The Wesmen fought back in the second set leading 16-11 at the timeout and eventually went on to even the match, winning the set by a score of 25-23.
In the beginning of set number three, both teams exchanged points only to see Manitoba go on a run to lead at the technical break and win the third set 25-17 and a 2-1 lead in the match.
Winnipeg turned their fortune around in the fourth set leading 16-13 at the technical break and continued their strong play to win the set 25-18 to force a fifth and deciding set.
The Wesmen carried the play throughout set number five and never looked back as they went on to win the final set by a score of 15-11.
Women's Soccer vs Red River College

The Women's Soccer team improved their MCAC regular season record to 3-0 with a convincing 10-0 victory over the Red River College Rebels Sunday afternoon at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex.
Serafina Trunzo and Jeanine found the net twice for the Wesmen. Chelsea Kwasnicki, Emily Lalande, Janelle Deniset, Sheri HInce, Kayla Jacobsen and Julia Anning added singles.
Winnipeg will next see action this Wednesday on the road with a match against Canadian Mennonite University.
Men's Soccer vs Red River College
WESMEN 6 Red River College 1
The Men's Soccer Team remained undefeated after posting a 6-1 victory over the Red River College Rebels Sunday afternoon at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex.
Second year midfielder Adam Bromley led the Wesmen with four goals.Kyle Fernandes and Samuel Okwudii each scored once.
Winnipeg (4-0) will next see action this Wednesday night at Canadian Mennonite University.

WESMEN def Waterloo 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-13)
The Wesmen defeated the Waterloo Warriors 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-13) in the final match of the preliminary round at the Brandon University Invitational Tournament Sunday morning in Brandon, Manitoba.
Winnipeg (3-0) will play the winner of the Brandon/Regina match in the gold medal match Sunday night at 6:00 p.m.
Devin Schmidt led Winnipeg with eight kills and four blocks.
Men's Volleyball vs Brandon (Gold Medal Match)

The Brandon Bobcats defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1(25-22,25-27,26-24,25-15) in the gold medal match at the Brandon Invitational Tournament Sunday night in Brandon, Manitoba.
Winnipeg finishes second in the tournament and heads home with an impressive overall record of 3-1 in the two day event.
A pair of Wesmen players picked up individual awards. Brendan Black was named the Best Blocker and Matt Stubler was named the Best Passer of the tournament.

Women's Volleyball vs UBC-Okanagan "Lea marc Volleyball Challenge"
WESMEN def UBC Okanagan 3-2 (25-19, 25-22, 23-25, 22-25, 15-6)
The Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the UBC Okanagan Heat 3-2 (25-19, 25-22, 23-25, 22-25, 15-6) in a showdown of unbeaten teams Saturday afternoon at the lea Marc Volleyball Challenge.
The win improves Winnipeg's record to 3-0, the Heat finish the preliminary round at 2-1.
Winnipeg jumped out to a great start in the opening set leading 16-7 at the technical timeout before closing out the first set by a score of 25-19.
The Heat had the early momentum in the second set leading 16-12 at the technical break only to see the Wesmen storm right back to win the second set 25-22 and take a 2-0 sets lead in the match.
In the third set, the Heat jumped out to a 16-10 lead at the set break only to the Wesmen battle back to tie the score at 19-19 later in the set. The teams exchanged points to 23-23 and UBCO closed out the set scoring the final two points to win the set by a score of 25-23.
In a tight fourth set the Heat grabbed a 16-15 lead at the technical timeout and forced a fifth set with a 25-22 win in set number four.
After an exchange of points early in the set, Winnipeg led 8-5 at the break and closed put the match on a 7-1 run to win the fifth set 15-6.
Winnipeg (3-0) will face the winner of Lakehead-Brandon match in the playoff round Saturday night at 8:00 p.m.
Women's Volleyball vs Brandon "Lea marc Volleyball Challenge" (Playoff Round)
WESMEN def Brandon 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-18)
The Winnipeg Wesmen advanced to the gold medal match at the lea Marc Volleyball Challenge. Winnipeg defeated the Brandon Bobcats 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-18) in the semi finals Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.
Winnipeg will face their cross town rivals, the Manitoba Bisons. Manitoba beat UBC Okanagan in four sets in the other semi-final.
Match time at the Duckworth Centre is 1:00 p.m.

The Wesmen erased a two set deficit to defeat the host Brandon Bobcats 3-2 (24-26, 22-21, 25-23, 25-20, 17-15) in the opening match of the Brandon University Invitational Tournament Saturday afternoon in Brandon, Manitoba.
Brendan Black led the Wesmen with 10 kills and eight blocks. Nathaniel Therrien had a strong serving match with four aces.
Winnipeg will face Regina Saturday night at 6:00 p.m.
Men's Volleyball vs Regina "Brandon University Invitational"
WESMEN def Regina 3-1 (25-22, 24-26, 27-25, 25-21)
A perfect start. The men's volleyball team wrapped up the first day of the Brandon Invitational Tournament with a perfect 2-0 record. Winnipeg defeated the Regina Cougars 3-1
(25-22, 24-26, 27-25, 25-21) Saturday night in Brandon.
Tom Douglas Powell led the Wesmen with 14 kills. Erik Wiebe had six blocks.
Winnipeg (2-0) will face Waterloo in the final match of the preliminary round Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. and will play in the playoff round later in the day.
Women's Basketball at Lakehead (non-conference)

The Winnipeg Wesmen picked up their second victory of the pre-season with a 74-67 victory over the Lakehead Thunderwolves Saturday night in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
Winnipeg defeated Lakehead 66-58 in the series opener Friday night.
Fifth year guard Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with a game high 22 points. Danielle Baril added 13, Alyssa Grant scored 11 points and tied for the team high in rebounds with seven. First year forward Tia Coulter finished with 10 points.
Winnipeg will head home to prepare for the BOB FM Women's Basketball Shootout (October 7-9) at the Duckworth Centre.
Men's Basketball at Lakehead (non-conference)
WESMEN 61 Lakehead 92
The Lakehead Thunderwolves defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 92-61 in a non-conference match Saturday night in Thunder Bay, Ontario.Winnipeg's leaders were Andrew Cunninham with 12 points and four assists and Kelvin Smith with 11 points.
Winnipeg held a 19-18 after ten minutes but the Thunderwolves outscored Winnipeg 26-8 in the second quarter to take a 44-27 lead at halftime.
Lakehead kept the pressure on the Wesmen in the second half outscoring Winnipeg 48-34 to make the final score 92-61.
Winnipeg will next see non-conference play as they host the Pembina Chrysler Tournament (October 21 and 22) at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN def Toronto 3-2 (23-25, 23-25, 25-9, 25-12, 15-11)
The Winnipeg Wesmen came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the University of Toronto Varsity Blues 3-2 (23-25, 23-25, 25-9, 25-12, 15-11) in the teams opening match of the 2011 lea Marc Volleyball Challenge tournament at the Duckworth Centre.
Toronto won the first two sets by identical 25-23 scores to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. Winnipeg stormed back winning the third set in convincing fashion by a score of 25-9 and forced a fifth and final set with a 25-12 win in set number four. Winnipeg held the lead for the fifth set and went on to win the match winning the fifth set by a score of 15-11.
Winnipeg (1-0) will face Regina (0-1) in one of the evening matches Friday night.
Women's Volleyball vs Regina "Lea marc Volleyball Challenge"
WESMEN def Regina 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-9)
The Winnipeg Wesmen completed day one of the lea Marc Volleyball with a perfect 2-0 record. In the evening match Winnipeg defeated Regina 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-9) at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Winnipeg defeated Toronto in five sets earlier in the day.
The Wesmen led 16-15 at the technical timeout in the first set and soon afterwards went on to win the set 25-21.
In the second set Winnipeg jumped out to a 16-9 lead at the technical break before going on to win the set 25-18.
The Winnipeg domination continued in the third set. Winnipeg jumped out to a huge 16-5 lead and never looked back winning the final set 25-9.
The Wesmen (2-0) will face UBC Okanagan (2-0) Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.

The women's basketball team opened up their pre season schedule on a winning note. The Wesmen defeated the Lakehead Thunderwolves 66-58 Friday night in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
Second year guard Stephanie Kleysen scored 17 points and hauled in 14 rebounds. First year forward Tia Coulter added 10 points and six rebounds.
Winnipeg and Lakehead will wrap up their two game set Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. (EST)
Men's Basketball at Lakehead (non-conference)
WESMEN 68 Lakehead 80
The Winnipeg Wesmen fell short in an 80-68 non-conference loss to the Lakehead University Thunderwolves Friday night in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
Winnipeg was led by Travis Krahn with 20 points and Eric Zimmerman with 14. Forward Benny Iko scored nine and added eight rebounds and six assists.
Winnipeg came storming out of the gate leading 21-15 after the first quarter. Winnipeg held off a Lakehead charge in the second quarter and went into the halftime break leading 38-35. The teams were tied at 51-51 after three quarters but Lakehead took control of the game in the final frame outscoring Winnipeg 29-17 to make the final score 80-68.
The teams will wrap up their weekend series Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. (EST)

WESMEN def Waterloo (25-20, 25-20, 25-19,25-19, 15-9)
The Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the University of Waterloo Warriors Thursday night in non-conference action at the Duckworth Centre.
Winnipeg won the first three sets and soon after both teams agreed to play the maximum five sets.
Matt Stubler and Ty Loewen led the Wesmen with eight kills each. Stephane Waldie led the team in digs with 11. Brendan Black was the leader in blocks with four. Setter Zack Diboll finished with 30 assists.
The Warriors were led by Cameron Wheelan with 10 kills. Hussein Abdo had 11 digs to lead the Warriors. Scott Thomson finished with 28 assists.
Winnipeg will next see action this Saturday and Sunday in Brandon at the Brandon University Invitational Tournament. The Wesmen will play Brandon and Regina on Saturday. Winnipeg will face Waterloo on Sunday morning followed by the playoff round later in the day.

The women's soccer team defeated the Red River College Rebels 10-0 Tuesday night at Red River College.
The victory improves the Wesmen's regular season record to 2-0.
Kayla Jacobson, Jeanine Froese and Kelsey Paul each scored twice for the Wesmen. Serafina Trunzo, Kayla White, Chelsea Kwasnicki and Chantal Powlesland each scored once.
Winnipeg will next see league action this Sunday in their home opener against Red River College. Match time is 12:00 p.m. at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex (900 Waverley Street)
The Men's team will take on the Rebels at 2:00 p.m.
