The Wesmen Baseball team collected $9500 in pledges and an additional $4000 was raised at the ball park thru pledges and silent auction draws. Some of the prizes included an autographed Buck Pierce helmet, Team Canada Baseball jersey and hat and tickets to a Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Winnipeg Jets game.
The team and community groups played a total of 100 innings that lasted a total of eight hours.
“The Wesmen Baseball program would like to thank the Winnipeg Goldeyes, Home Run Sports and the staff at both The University of Winnipeg and at Baseball Manitoba for their outstanding support at this event. I want to also thank those who pledged and attended this inaugural event. As a result of the outpouring support the program will be able to use the funds for a planned spring trip to Minneapolis”, said Head Coach Mike Krykewich.
Student-athletes in the Wesmen baseball program are currently attending classes and training. The team will begin its full slate of games beginning in the Spring of 2012.In its first full season of competition, the team will play 35 to 40 spring games against National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and National Junior Colleges Athletic Association (NJCAA) competition. The goal is to have the program compete as a full member of the NAIA within a few years. The closest NAIA conference is the Dakota Athletic Conference, which features schools in North and South Dakota.
