The Men's Baseball Team Were Winners Of the 40th Annual University Of Winnipeg Great Rock Climb Held Friday Afternoon..
Students, faculty and staff gathered today on the front lawn of The
University of Winnipeg for the 40th Annual Great Rock Climb. Nine teams
of three took the challenge to climb to the top of the infamous Rock of
Remembrance, a 25-ton granite boulder that rests on UWinnipeg's front
lawn. This annual test of physical endurance and ingenuity began in
1972.The team to get all three members to the rock's summit in the fastest time was the Wesmen Baseball Team. This triple hitter trio Josh Drews, Brandon Kuzyk and Caleb Smith, secured the Great Rock Climb Trophy with an impressive time of 16.9 seconds. The College Men's Basketball team placed second followed by the Men's Soccer team who placed third.
The team ran down the 50.3 metres from the steps of Wesley Hall to climb to the top of the Great Rock. The record set by a team in 1979 of only 9.8 seconds remains the best time on record.
The top three teams received cash prizes, provided generously by the family of President Emeritus the late Dr. Henry E. Duckworth, the founder of the event.
