Danica Hughes to Join Women’s Volleyball Program
The University of Winnipeg and Women’s Volleyball Head Coach Diane Scott are pleased to announce that Danica Hughes from Linden Christian School has committed to joining the University of Winnipeg Women’s Volleyball program in September.
The 5’10” setter will graduate from Linden Christian School in June with an academic average of 90%. She will be enrolling in the faculty of Science at the University of Winnipeg.
Hughes was team captain of the Linden Christian Wings team that won the 2006 and 2008 High School Volleyball Zone Championships. At the 2008 AAA High School Provincial Championship in Dauphin, she was honored with the Players Choice Award. She was also named the Linden Christian Girl’s Volleyball MVP back in grade ten.
Danica has been a member of the Jr. Wesmen Girl’s Volleyball Club (2006, 2008-2009). She was recently chosen as an all-star after helping her team finish in second place at the 2009 Provincial Championships last month. A member of the Manitoba Provincial Team for two years (2007, 2008), she helped her team to a first place finish at the 2007 Western Elites Volleyball Tournament held in Kelowna, British Columbia.
A multisport athlete, Hughes is also a member of the school’s basketball and badminton teams. In her spare time she is involved in the school band and choir programs.
“We are very pleased to have Danica make the commitment to join our university program. She has continued to develop both on and off the court into a very well balanced young woman. Her athleticism and leadership combined with her maturity are a welcome addition. Danica was a key factor this club season in our 18U success. She is ready for more”, added Wesmen Head Coach Diane Scott.
“Danica has the attitude of a true champion, which is displayed in every aspect of her life. She strives for excellence in all she does and has a work ethic that is incomparable. Danica is a positive leader on and off the court and her teammates look to her for guidance and affirmation. She will be a great addition to the Wesmen program”, said Linden Christian Varsity Girl’s Volleyball Head Coach Jen Bergmann.
