Top Ranked Coulter Coming To The U of W

The number one ranked high school girl’s basketball player in Manitoba will play her basketball next year at the University of Winnipeg. Head coach Tanya McKay is pleased to announce that Tia Coulter from Crocus Plains high school in Brandon has committed to joining the University of Winnipeg Women’s Basketball program for the start of the 2011-2012 Canada West season.Coulter, a 6 foot forward was recently named an all-star at the Provincial AAAA High School Basketball Championships. She averaged 26.7 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, five steals, and four blocks per game for the Plainsmen in her final season. She scored a season high 34 points in her final home game in the Provincial quarter finals against Vincent Massey (Winnipeg).
Coulter was named to the all-star team at the Sisler, John Taylor, Forbidden Flavors Java Jam and Pembina Trails tournaments this past season. She was honoured with the Nick Laping Memorial Award for her efforts as an athlete, leader and volunteer while playing at the John Taylor Tournament.
In grade nine she was a member of the Crocus Plains Provincial AAAA basketball Championship team. The title was the first ever for the Plainsmen Girl’s Basketball team in the school’s history.
She was selected as a Provincial all-star for three consecutive years and earned a spot on the MHSAA All-Manitoba team the past two years with this year’s announcement yet to come. Coulter was also a member of Manitoba’s Provincial team and represented the province at the 2009 Canada Summer Games.
CIS basketball is familiar to the Coulter family, Tia’s parents Barb and Grant were members of the Brandon University Bobcats in the early 1980’s. Grant was a two time GPAC all-star.
An accomplished student, Tia has been a member of the school’s honour roll every semester since grade nine.
"Tia comes from a family with a history of basketball in Manitoba. Both parents (Barb and Grant) played for the Bobcats in Brandon, are coaches in the community and her dad Grant is a well respected referee at the CIS level. Tia has a very high basketball IQ. She is one of the fittest athletes at the high school level and has the ability to play both in the paint and on the perimeter. We are very excited she has committed to our Program”, said Wesmen head coach Tanya McKay.
