Lother, Gooch Named Athletes Of The Year
Men's Basketball Player Nick Lother and Women's Basketball Player Catie Gooch Were Named The University of Winnipeg's 2010-2011 Athletes of The Year..
The University of Winnipeg is pleased to announce that mens basketball player Nick Lother and womens basketball player Catie Gooch have been chosen as the 2010-2011 University of Winnipeg Wesmen Male and Female Athletes of the year. The announcement was made this evening at the annual Wesmen Athletics Awards Banquet held at the Radisson Hotel.Male Athlete of the Year
Nick Lother Lother in his fifth and final season, started 19 games for the Wesmen during the regular season. He placed in the top 15 in several Canada West statistical categories including 5th in scoring with over 20 points per game, 8th in assists, 8th in minutes played and 11th in free throw percentage. Lother scored a Canada West season high 45 points against Lethbridge (February 18, 2011). On that same night he set a modern day Canada West Mens Basketball single game record for both successful free throws (22) and free throw attempts (28). His accomplishments earned him both a Canada West and a CIS Male Athlete of the Week award. Nick was named the University of Winnipeg Male Athlete of the Month (February, 2011) and was named the University of Winnipeg Male Player of the Week four times during the 2010-2011 season.
Female Athlete of the Year
Catie Gooch Fifth year guard was named to the Canada West First All Star team after helping the Wesmen to an impressive 20-4 record during the regular season. Gooch appeared in 22 regular season games during the regular season and finished in the top ten in several Canada West Conference statistical categories including 3rd in scoring with over 16 points per game, 1st in free throw percentage at 86%, st in three point field goals made (72), 2nd in minutes played, 3rd in three point field goal percentage with over 43% made and 4th in steals. Gooch recently broke the modern day Canada West record for three pointers made in a single game draining nine of them in Brandon on February 12. Catie was named the University of Winnipeg Female Athlete of the Month two times (January and February, 2011) and was named the University of Winnipeg Female Player of the Week three times during the 2010-2011 season. This years selection is her third consecutive University of Winnipeg Female Athlete of the Year honour.

Academic All-Canadians
25 student athletes were recognized as Academic All-Canadian for the 2009-10 Academic year. In order to gain this status a student athlete must finish the academic year with an overall average of 80% or better. The Wesmen athletic department is proud of the fact that 45% of their student athletes earned Academic All-Canadian status which is more than double the national average of 20%.
