The Winnipeg Wesmen came up a bit short in a 62-59 loss to the Carleton University Ravens in the CIS Central Regional Semi-Finals Friday evening in Ottawa, Ontario.

Alyson Bush scored 20 points and recorded five steals to lead the Ravens to victory. Krista Van Slingerland added 11 points, including three-three pointers.

Fourth year guard Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with a game high 23 points, three steals and two blocks. Alex MacIver posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Carleton will host the StFX X-Women tomorrow night in the final at 7 p.m. The winner will head to the CIS Final 8 national championship in Windsor, Ont. next weekend.

The opening quarter saw a lot of back and forth action, with three ties in the first ten minutes of play and both teams taking turns holding the lead. Winnipeg held a slim 15-13 lead after the opening ten minutes.

In the second quarter both teams got off to slow starts. A basket by Carleton’s Ashleigh Cleary was the only two points scored in the first four minutes of play. The Wesmen took their biggest lead of the half on a three-point play by Alex MacIver to put the Wesmen ahead 22-17. The Ravens would come back in the final minutes of play and after a basket from Cleary, the host team took a one-point lead into the halftime break leading 27-26.

After the halftime break the teams were dead locked at 30-30 in the opening few minutes of the third quarter. Carleton gained momentum a few minutes later and went on to outscore the Wesmen 18-12 in the quarter to lead 45-38 after three quarters of play.

The Wesmen made a valiant attempt for a comeback in the final minutes of play, pulling within two points (61-59) with 36 seconds left. After a free throw by Cleary gave the Ravens a 62-59 lead, Winnipeg had one last chance with a few seconds left on the clock to tie the game but a three point shot fell just short.

“The kids played hard. We had a tough stretch where we did not score. We finished strong and had a good chance to tie the game”, said Wesmen head coach Tanya McKay.
