Canada West Honours Kleysen, Gooch, Ogidan
Three Members Of The Women's Basketball Team,Stephanie Kleysen,Catie Gooch And Amy Ogidan Were Honoured By The Canada West Athletic Association..
The University of Winnipeg in conjunction with the Canada West Universities Athletic Association are pleased to announce that three members of the University of Winnipeg Womens Basketball team have been honoured with individual Canada West awards.
First year sensation Stephanie Kleysen is the Canada West Conference Womens Basketball Rookie of the Year. The 59 guard out of Vincent Massey Collegiate (Winnipeg) played a huge role in helping the Wesmen to a 20-4 regular season record and a second place finish in the Canada West Womens Basketball Conference regular season standings. Kleysen was the conference leader in rebounds (9.5 rebounds per game) 228 in total. She also tied for the conference lead registering six double-doubles. She finished third in team scoring averaging 8.9 points per game during the regular season. Stephanie grabbed a season high 17 rebounds twice during the regular season (vs Manitoba, December 2, 2010) and against the Regina Cougars on January 22, 2011.Stephanie was named the University of Winnipeg Female Player of the Week on three occasions during the 2010-2011 season and was honored as the University of Winnipegs Female Athlete of the Month for December 2010. Stephanie is very deserving of this award. She works hard, challenges herself to improve and is a great team player. To lead the Canada West Conference in rebounding as a freshman is a huge individual achievement but it is also a team achievement. , said University of Winnipeg Womens Basketball head coach Tanya McKay.
Named to the Canada West First All Star team is fifth year guard Catie Gooch. Gooch appeared in 22 regular season games during the regular season and finished in the top ten in several Canada West Conference statistical categories including scoring (3rd, 16.2 ppg), minutes played (2nd, 32.3 mpg), free throw percentage (1st, 66/76 .868%), three point fg % (72/167. .431%), steals (4th, 2.6 spg), three point fg made (1st, 72, 3.3 pg). Gooch recently broke the modern day Canada West record for three pointers made in a single game draining nine in Brandon (February 12, 2011). Catie was named the University of Winnipeg Female Athlete of the Month two times (January and February, 2011) and was named the University of Winnipeg Female Player of the Week three times during the 2010-2011 season. This years selection is the fourth consecutive for Gooch, she was a second team all star the previous three seasons. Catie had a career year leading our program to a 20-4 record during the regular season. Finishing at 16.2 ppg as a a point guard (3rd in Canada West) and proving to be one of the purest three point shooters in our league,Catie had an outstanding season. We are very proud that she has been recognized as a Canada West 1st Team All Star, added McKay.
Named to the Canada West Second All-Star Team is fourth year guard Amy Ogidan. Ogidan the 2007-08 Canada West Rookie of the Year,appeared in all 24 regular season games and finished second in both team scoring averaging 11.4 points per game and rebounding with 6.3 boards per game. Amy scored a season high 24 points against Fraser Valley (February 5, 2011). She was selected as the University of Winnipeg Female Player of the Week once during the 2010-2011 season. Amy has raised the bar. Coming into this season she was relentless to raise her game and she did. Her determination and hard work all season both on and off the court played a huge role in the teams success this season, said Tanya McKay.
