Cascades Defeat Wesmen To Win Series

The Fraser Valley Cascades Defeated The Winnipeg Wesmen 77-64 To Win Their Best Of Three CW Quarter Final Series In Two Games..

The Fraser Valley Cascades, thanks to a strong second half defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 77-64 in the second game of the best of three Canada West quarter final series Saturday evening in Winnipeg. The Cascades win the series 2-0.

The Cascades won the series opener 77-63 Friday night, outscored the Wesmen 46-30 in the second half after trailing 34-31 at halftime.

Tessa Klassen led the Cascades with 19 points, including five-three pointers and seven assists. Alyssa Gaukel and Nicole Wierks added 17 points each. Sarah Wierks had her second consecutive double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Alex MacIver led the Wesmen with 19 points and eight rebounds. Catie Gooch scored 15 and dished out five assists. Mackenzie Prasek added 11 points, including three-three pointers.

Winnipeg played a solid opening quarter, despite having three players picking up two fouls each in the opening six minutes of the game. Alex MacIver scored 11 points in the quarter to pace the Wesmen to a 23-15 lead after the opening ten minutes.

The Wesmen continued to put pressure on the Cascades in the second quarter, opening up an 11 point lead at 31-20 close to the halfway mark of the quarter. The Cascades led by a pair of three-pointers by Tessa Klassen went on a 11-3 run to cut the Wesmen lead to 34-31 at halftime.

In the third quarter Winnipeg held the advantage early until the Cascades, trailing 43-37 went on to score 11 unanswered points to take the lead at 48-43 with 3:37 left in the quarter. Catie Gooch scored five points late in the quarter to give the Wesmen a 52-51 lead after thirty minutes.

The Cascades controlled play in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Wesmen 26-12 to make the final score 77-64.

" It was a very tough weekend. We did not play well. Fraser Valley was prepared, hit big shots and we could not answer", said Wesmen Head Coach Tanya McKay.

Fraser Valley will move onto the Canada West Final Four next weekend in Saskatoon. Winnipeg will head to the Central Regionals in two weeks (exact location to be determined).

The University of Fraser Valley Cascades upset the Winnipeg Wesmen 77-63 in game one of the best of three Canada West quarter finals Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

First year forward Sarah Wierks led the Cascades with a double-double consisting of 18 points and 16 rebounds. Aieisha Luyken sharwed the team high in scoring with 18 points, including three-three pointers, and five assists. Alyssa Gaukel added 13 while Tessa Klassen finished with 10 points.

Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with a game high 23 points, including three-three pointers. Ogidan also led the team with seven rebounds and three assists. Stephanie Kleysen added 12 points. Ashleigh Chichlowski shared the lead in rebounds with seven.

The Cascades opened the game up leading 20-15 after the opening quarter. Winnipeg cut into the deficit in the second quarter outscoring the Cascades 23-21 to trail 41-38 at the half time break.Wierks and Luyken each scored 10 points in the opening half. Ogidan scored 18 points for the Wesmen in the opening twenty minutes.

In the third quarter a Stephanie Kleysen jumper early on pulled the Wesmen to within a point at 41-40. The Cascades, as they did all game answered right back scoring seven unanswered points to take a 48-40 lead with just over five minutes left in the quarter. The Wesmen closed the gap to five points at 52-47 only to see Courtney Bartel and Tessa Klassen drain consecutive three-pointers to extend the Cascade lead to double digits at 58-47. Fraser Valley led 60-51 after three quarters.

Winnipeg once again fought back in the fourth quarter pulling to within five points at 63-58, only to see the Cascades score seven straight points to extend their lead to 70-58 with 4:25 left. Fraser Valley continued to lead for the remainder of the quarter to make the final score 77-63.

"Fraser Valley played well. They hit big shots. Anytime we made a dent in the score, they answered right back", added Wesmen Head Coach Tanya McKay.

The Cascades lead the best of three series 1-0. Game two will take place at the Duckworth Centre Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. Game three if necessary will take place on Sunday night also at 7:00 p.m.
