On a night that celebrated the playing career's of three-fifth year players, the Winnipeg Wesmen were nothing short of dominant in a 75-47 victory over the Fraser Valley Cascades Saturday night in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg with the victory improves to an impressive 16-4 in the Canada West Conference standings. The Cascades fall to 8-12.

Fourth year guard Amy Ogidan was the spark the Wesmen needed on this night, scoring a game high 24 points and hauling in nine rebounds. Mackenzie Prasek added 12 points all on three pointers. Catie Gooch finished with 11 points, six assists and three steals. Stephanie Kleysen led the team with a game high 12 rebounds.

Nicole Wierks led Fraser Valley with 10 points. Sarah Wierks and Alyssa Gaukel added nine. Sarah wierks led the team with 11 rebounds.

The Wesmen got off to a great start leading 7-1, with Ogidan scoring five points, in the opening three minutes. Winnipeg led 15-12 after the opening quarter.

Winnipeg came out on fire in the second quarter, connecting on eight-of-thirteen shots from the field and outscoring Fraser Valley 22-11 to take a 37-23 lead into the halftime break.

In the third quarter Winnipeg outscored Fraser Valley 16-15 to extend their lead to 53-38 after thirty minutes and play and closed out the final quarter outscoring the visitors 22-9 to make the final score 75-47.

Winnipeg was on fire from three point range, draining 12-of-22 (55%) three pointers. The Wesmen had the edge in rebounds43-35.

Fifth year players Catie Gooch, Kaitlin Rempel and Alex MacIver were honoured in a special ceremony following the match. It was the final regular season home game for the Wesmen this season.

Winnipeg will head west to Brandon next weekend to face their provincial rivals the Brandon Bobcats. Fraser Valley will head to Lethbridge to take on the Pronghorns.

The Fraser Valley Cascades earned a split in their two game set against Winnipeg upending the Wesmen 75-68 Saturday night in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg won the opening game of the series Friday night by a score of 88-73.

The victory improves the Cascades record to 7-13. Winnipeg falls to 3-17.

Joel Friesen led the Cascades with a team high 23 points. Zeon Gray added 18 and Sam Freeman finished with 14. James Elliott led the team with six rebounds.

Fifth year guard Nick Lother, playing in his final home game as a Wesmen scored a game high 30 points, including six-three pointers. Benny Iko added 12 and Lynden Drayton-Barrow finished with 10 points. Iko led the Wesmen with nine rebounds.

Both teams started slow in the opening twenty minutes with Winnipeg holding a 15-14 lead after the opening quarter. Fraser Valley outscored the Wesmen 12-6 in the second quarter to take a 26-21 lead into the locker room at halftime. Fraser Valley gfinished the opening half shooting 39% from the field, Winnipeg struggled at 27%.

The third quarter was a completely different story. Winnipeg shot the lights out at 69% shooting from the field on their way to outscoring the Cascades 26-18 to take a 47-44 lead into the final quarter.

Fraser Valley stepped up their play in the final quarter and took the lead in the early part of the quarter. The teams exchanged baskets in a wild opening eight minutes, a pair of Nick Lother free throws gave Winnipeg a one point lead at 64-63 with 2:00 left. A pair of Cascade baskets gave the visitors a 67-64 lead with just over one minute to play. Lynden Drayton Barrow scored a clutch basket to pull the Wesmen to within one (67-66), only to have Zeon Gray score five points to put the game out of reach, making the final score 75-68.

Winnipeg had the edge in rebounds 36-30 and in three pointers 10-7.

Fifth year guard Nick Lother was honoured in a special pre-game ceremony for his stellar five year career as a Wesmen.

Winnipeg will head west to Brandon next weekend to face their provincial rivals the Brandon Bobcats. Fraser Valley will head to Lethbridge to take on the Pronghorns.


Women's Volleyball at Thompson Rivers

The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a two match sweep over the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack with a 3-1 (25-20, 25-17, 25-27, 25-12) victory Saturday afternoon in Kamloops, British Columbia.

Winnipeg opened the series with an impressive 3-0 win Friday afternoon. The victory extends Winnipeg's winning streak to three and improves their record to 6-10, currently tied with the Regina Cougars for the final playoff spot in the canada West Conference. The WolfPack's  record falls to 2-14.

Carleen Kruschel led the Wesmen with 17kills and a match high 27 defensive digs. Fourth year middle Lauren Sears had an all-round solid match with 16 kills, three service aces and six blocks.Mackenzie Jeffrey and Kaelyn Gauthier tallied nine kills each. Brittany Habing finished with 41 assists.

Katarina Osadchuk, Kelly Asleson and Amanda Frayne led the WolfPack with 10 kills each. Asleson had a team high 18 defensive digs while setter Kirsten Knudskov finished with 39 assists.

The WolfPack looking to rebound from yesterdays results, started the match on fire racing off to a lead of 8-3 at the first technical timeout of the opening set. Winnipeg was able to fight back thanks to back-to-back kills by Lauren Sears combined with three errors by the WolfPack jumped in front 16-15 at the second timeout. Winnipeg pulled away late and eventually won the opening set 25-20.

Winnipeg carried the momentum into the second set. Three kills by Kaelyn Gauthier led the Wesmen to an 8-4 lead at the first timeout and Winnipeg was able to maintain the lead at the second break leading 16-10. The Wesmen took control of the match winning the second set 25-17.

In the third set Winnipeg pulled out to a quick 8-3 lead at the first technical timeout. Thompson Rivers was able to regroup and closed the gap to 16-14 in Winnipeg's favor at the second technical break. The teams exchanged points to 25-25 late in the set and the WolfPack took advantage of a Winnipeg service error to lead 26-25 and closed out the third set with a service ace to win the third set 27-25.

The fourth set was a close affair early on with Winnipeg leading 8-5 at the first break and went on to score 10 straight points to take a commanding 16-5 lead at the second break of the set. Winnipeg closed out the match winning the fourth set 25-12.

"Our goal coming into this weekend was to leave with two wins, mission accomplished. We have performed down the stretch and remained in the playoff hunt", added head coach Diane Scott.

Winnipeg will close out their regular season schedule at home next Friday and Saturday against the Brandon Bobcats. Match time on Friday night is 6:00 p.m. and on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.

The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack defeated the visiting Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (25-21, 15-25, 25-19, 25-22) Saturday afternoon at Thopson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia.

The WolfPack improve their record to 7-9, Winnipeg sits with a record of 2-14.

Kevin Tillie had a solid game for the WolfPack finishing the match with 18 kills, 11 defensive digs, and seven blocks. Ryan Talsma added 10 kills.

Fourth year outside Marc Ross led the Wesmen with 14 kills. Middle blockers Devin Schmidt and Matt Dueck finished with 13 and 10 kills respectively. Dueck and Brendan Black led Winnipeg with five blocks each. Nathaniel Therrien led the team with 10 defensive digs.

In the opening set, Winnipeg led by the offensive attack by Marc Ross and Matt Dueck jumped out to an 8-5 lead at the first timeout. Winnipeg held a slim 13-11 lead when the WolfPack scored five of the next six points to take a 16-14 lead at the second timeout. Thompson Rivers would later go on to win the set 25-21.

Head coach Larry McKay and his team rebounded in a big way in the second set. Winnipeg simply dominated the set with leads of 8-2 and 16-5 at the technical timeouts. The Wesmen would even the match winning the second set by a score of 25-15. Winnipeg finished the set with an attack percentage of .310, compared to .062 for the WolfPack.

The Wesmen carried their momentum into set number three leading 8-7 at the first break only to see the WolfPack fight back to take the lead at the second timeout by a score of 16-14. Thompson Rivers held a 23-19 lead late in the set and took advantage of back-to-back Wesmen attacking errors to win the third set 25-19.

In set number four, Winnipeg got off to a great start leading 8-6 at the first break but as it happened in the previous set, the WolfPack stormed back to take the lead at 16-14 at the second timeout. Kevin Tillie pounded home two kills late in the set to give the WolfPack the fourth and final set by a score of 25-22.

Winnipeg will wrap up their regular season against the Brandon Bobcats next Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre. Match times are 7:30 p.m. on Friday and 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Good teams find ways to win and on this night that statement was true for the Winnipeg Wesmen. The Winnipeg Wesmen needed an extra frame to defeat the Fraser Valley Cascades 79-70 Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The overtime victory lifts Winnipeg's record to 15-4 in the Canada West Conference standings. The Cascades fall to 8-11.

The teams were deadlocked at 67-67 after regulation time.

Fifth year guard Catie Gooch scored a game high 29 points to lead the Wesmen. Alex MacIver added 13 poionts and a game high nine rebounds. Amy Ogidan finished with 12 points, four assists and four steals. Mackenzie Prasek tallied 11 points.

Nicole Wierks led the Cascades with 15 points followed by Allyssa Gaukel with 13. Aieisha Lauken had 12 points and seven assists. Tessa Klassen finished with 11 points. Wirks, Gaukel and Sam Kurath shared the rebounding lead with eight.

Winnipeg opened the contest on fire building a 9-0 lead before the game was three minutes old. The Wesmen took control of the game early on leading 21-12 after the opening frame.

The Wesmen carried a double digit lead for the opening few minutes of the second quarter until back-to-back three pointers by the Cascades cut the Wesmen lead to 34-28 with under three minutes to play in the opening half. The Wesmen, thanks to three pointers by Prasek and Gooch extended their lead to 10 at 40-30 but a late 6-2 run by the Cascades cut the Winnipeg lead to 42-36 at halftime.

The halftime break seemed to inspire the Cascades as they outscored the Wesmen 20-6 in the third quarter to take a 56-48 lead in to the final quarter. The Cascades shot 50% from the field in the quarter and held Winnipeg to 17% shooting from the field.

The Wesmen responded in the fourth quarter outscoring the Cascades 6-2 early on to trail 58-54 with 6:12 left in regulation. Catie Gooch scored five big points in a two minute span to give the Wesmen a 67-64 lead until Aieisha Luyken nailed a three pointer with 1:45 left to tie the score at 67-67.

In the extra frame, consecutive three pointers by Ashleigh Chichlowski and Mackenzie Prasek gave the Wesmen a 73-69 lead. Winnipeg would go on to outscore the Cascades 12-3 in the five minute overtime to clinch the victory.

The Wesmen and Cascades will wrap up their weekend set Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. At the conclusion of the game, head coach Tanya McKay will pay tribute to fifth year Wesmen players Catie Gooch, Kaitlin Rempel and Alex MacIver.

The Winnipeg Wesmen put in one of their best efforts of the season and the results showed. The Wesmen defeated the Fraser Valley Cascades 88-73 in the opening game of a weekend series Friday evening in Winnipeg.

The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 3-16. The loss drops the Cascades to 6-13 in the Canada West Conference standings.

Fifth year guard Nick Lother led the Wesmen attack with a game high 27 points, six three pointers and seven assists. Benny Iko had one of his better games of the season scoring 25 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Brayden Duff scored 14 points and also hauled in eight rebounds.

Joel Friesen led Fraser Valley with 23 points. Zeon Gray added 17 points and six assists. Sam Freeman and James Elliott shared the rebounding lead with six.

Winnipeg had a solid opening quarter with timely baskets and strong play under the boards to take a 20-15 lead after the opening quarter.

The second quarter started out as a tight defensive pair with Winnipeg holding on to a 35-29 lead with 4:00 left until halftime. After a Cascade three pointer cut the Wesmen lead to 35-32, Winnipeg scored seven unanswered points to extend their lead to 42-32. A late 10-4 run by Fraser Valley made the score 46-42 in Winnipeg's favor at halftime.

Points were hard to come by in the third quarter with Winnipeg outscoring Fraser Valley 16-15 to take a 62-57 lead into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Benny Iko scored seven points in the final 5:00 to help the Wesmen outscore the Cascades 26-16 to make the final score 88-73.

Winnipeg had the edge in rebounds (37-29), steals (8-4) and assists (22-11). The two teams will wrap up their weekend series Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Fifth year guard Nick Lother will be honoured in a special pre-game ceremony.

The Winnipeg Wesmen kept their playoff aspirations in sight with an impressive 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-18) Friday afternoon at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia.

The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 5-10, one game back of the Regina Cougars for the final playoff spot in the Canada West Women's Volleyball Conference standings. Thompson Rivers record falls to 2-13.

Second year left side Carleen Kruschel led the Wesmen attack with a match high 13 kills. Fourth year middle Lauren Sears had seven kills and a pair of service aces. Alix Krahn was strong at the net finishing with six blocks. Setter Brittany Habing had 30 assists and three blocks. Kaelyn Gauthier led the Wesmen with 13 defensive digs.

Anna Dyakiewicz led the WolfPack with eight kills. Katarina Osadchuk and Kelly Asleson finished with seven. Asleson led the team with 13 defensive digs.

A strong defensive performance at the net in the opening set helped the Wesmen open up a lead of 8-4 at the first timeout and continued solid play enabled Winnipeg to open up a 16-9 lead at the second timeout. Winnipeg went on to win the opening set 25-20.

In the second set, Winnipeg's offensive attack and strong serving took over. The Wesmen trailed 8-7 at the first timeout only to bounce back and take the lead back at 16-15 at the second break. Alicia Perry came off the bench to serve up two consecutive service aces to open up an 18-15 lead. Winnipeg went on to win the second set by a score of 25-20. Winnipeg finished the set with an impressive .462 attack percentage,

In set number three neither team was able to pull away early on as both teams exchanged points to the first timeout with Winnipeg leading 8-6. The Wesmen maintained their two point lead to the second timeout holding a 16-14 lead. Winnipeg pulled away in the late stages of the set to win the final set of the match by a score of 25-18.

Winnipeg was without the services of last years CIS Rookie of the Year, Sonia Rossy who will be sitting out the remainder of the season with a shoulder injury.

The two teams will continue their weekend series Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time)

The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-22, 27-25, 25-19) in three tough sets Friday afternoon at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia.

Thompson Rivers now sits with a record of 6-9 on the season while Winnipeg falls to 2-13.

The WolfPack were led by Kevin Tillie who finished the match with 17 kills. Ryan Talsma added nine kills, 11 defensive digs and three blocks. Setter Mike Hawkins had 27 assists.

First year middle Brendan Black led the Wesmen with 11 kills. Fifth year setter Dan Lother had 28 assists and a team high 10 defensive digs.

Winnipeg opened the first set leading 8-4 at the first technical timeout. The WolfPack were able to fight back to take a 16-14 lead at the second break of the set. Thompson Rivers opened leads of four points on two occasions only to see Winnipeg fight back to close the gap to two points. The hometown WolfPack were able to put away the stubborn Wesmen team winning the first set 25-22.

The WolfPack carried their momentum into the second set leading 8-6 and 16-12 at the technical timeouts.. The WolfPack carried a 24-21 lead and looked to be on the verge of winning the set. Winnipeg had other ideas, fighting off three match points on back-to-back kills by Brendan Black and one by Matt Stubler tied the score at 24-24. The WolfPack scored three of the next four points to win the second set 27-25.

Thompson Rivers carried the play in the third set leading 8-6 and 16-13 at the technical timeouts and eventually went on to win the third set by a score of 25-19. The WolfPack finished the third set with an attack percentage of .394.

Winnipeg and Thompson Rivers will close out their two match series Saturday afternoon.at 4:45 p.m. (Winnipeg Time)
