College Wesmen MBB Hard At Work In Community

The UW College Wesmen MBB Team Have Been Hard At Work In The Community Coaching The Inner City Wesmen Program And Local High School Programs..

The University of Winnipeg’s College Wesmen Men’s Basketball Team has been hard at work in the community coaching in the Inner-City Wesmen program and local high school programs.

The Inner-City Wesmen program that was started and  run by Bob Axworthy, has expanded to include a Boy’s program this year.  The program has 3 teams and is for boy’s 14-18 years old from the inner city.  Given Isaac, Jon Piccici, Steven Ralko,  and Matt Smith are Mentor Coaches in this program.  In addition the College Wesmen also have Lucas Rattai and Mike Villineava coaching in the Winnipeg Minor Basketball league supporting our community partner Spence Neighborhood Association.  Deng Wol coaches a grade 9 team at Gordon Bell and Brayden Bernstein and Aiden Benarroch assist with coaching Gray Acadamy.

Head coach Grant Richter who in also The University of Winnipeg’s Director of Athletic Program Development & Community Liaison is thrilled with his teams commitment.  “Its great to see these young student athletes giving back to the game they love.  They all have very busy schedules with school, practices and games, but they are all willing to volunteer their time and energy so neighborhood kid’s can have a chance to play organized sport.”

The College Wesmen have been as impressive on the court this season as they have been in the community, sporting a 9-0 record that leaves them in first place in the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference.  All of the teams being coached by the college Wesmen players will be invited out to watch their coaches play their next home game vs Oak Hills February 26th at 3:30 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.
