The score does not dictate the final results in this battle between Canada West rivals. The Alberta Golden Bears defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen in three hard fought sets Saturday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Alberta with the victory improves their record to 13-1. Winnipeg's record now stands at 2-12.

The Golden Bears were led by the duo of Spencer Leiske and Jay Olmstead, each finishing the match with 16 kills. Erik Mattson led Alberta with 10 defensive digs. Setter Tanner Nault finished with 40 assists, three service aces and four blocks.

Winnipeg was led by Marc Ross and Matt Dueck each finishing with 10 kills. Libero Nathaniel Therrien added 10 defensive digs. Fifth year setter Dan Lother had 38 assists.

In the opening set, strong net play by both teams early on combined with several key blocks kept the score close at 8-6 in Alberta's favor at the first timeout. The teams exchanged points to the second break of the set with Alberta holding on to a slim 16-14 lead. The Golden Bears dominated the remainder of the set outscoring Winnipeg 9-1 down the stretch to win the set 25-15.

Winnipeg rebounded in the early stages of set number two racing out to a 6-3 lead, thanks to three kills early on by Ty Loewen. The Wesmen held the advantage at the first technical leading 8-6. The Wesmen continued their strong play and held a slim 16-14 lead at the second timeout. The teams exchanged points late in the set (19-19). Alberta rebounded with a pair of Leiske kills and a Winnipeg service error to eventually win the second set 25-22.

Set number three had the Wesmen in the lead at the opening stages. Winnipeg jumped out to an 8-5 lead at the first break only to see Alberta score three straight points to tie the score at 8-8. Alberta gained the momentum back in the middle portion of the set leading 16-15 at the second break. The Golden Bears looked to be in control and ready to close out the match leading 23-19 but the tough Wesmen team would not go down without a fight. Winnipeg scored three straight points to cut the deficit to 23-22 but Alberta scored the final two points to win the third set 25-22.

Winnipeg will travel to Thompson Rivers next week for a pair of afternoon matches on Friday and Saturday against the Wolfpack. Alberta will host the Saskatchewan Huskies.

It was a win for the ages. The Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the number six ranked Alberta Pandas 3-2 in a thrilling five set match Saturday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The victory by the Wesmen improves their record to 4-10. Alberta sits with a record of 8-6 in the Canada West Conference standings.

Fourth year middle Lauren Sears was on fire for the Wesmen finishing with a match high 21 kills and six blocks. Carleen Kruschel tallied 18 kills. Kaelyn Gauthier finished with 11. First year setter Brittany Habing played a big part in the win finishing with 50 assists and four service aces. Libero Danielle Bulloch led the Wesmen with 22 defensive digs.

Fifth year leftside Tiffany Proudfoot led the Pandas with 15 kills, 21 defensive digs and four service aces. Krista Zubick added 12 kills. Alyssa Jones led the team with 27 assists.

The Pandas opened the first set leading 8-6 at the first technical only to see Winnipeg fight back. Strong serving by Brittany Habing pulled the teams even to 12-12. The Pandas regrouped to take a 16-15 lead into the second timeout. Winnipeg held set point at 24-22, but a service error closed the gap to 24-23, followed by a Panda kill tied the score at 24-24. Alberta scored the final two points to win the first set 26-24.

Alberta started the second set on a strong note jumping out to a quick 8-3 lead. A Winnipeg timeout soon after proved to be beneficial with Winnipeg cutting the deficit to 12-11 at the midway point of the set. Alberta led 16-14 at the second timeout. Winnipeg mounted a comeback later in the set backed by kills by Kruschel and Gauthier to win the second set 25-21.

In the third set Alberta led at both timeouts by scores of 8-6 and 16-15. Winnipeg fought back to take a 20-17 lead late in the set but Alberta went on a set ending 8-1 run to win the third set 25-21.

The fourth set started out like the previous three, with Alberta leading at the first technical 8-3 only to see the Wesmen fight back once again to close the gap to 16-13 at the second timeout. Winnipeg managed to tie the score at 19-19 and scored six of the next nine points to win the fourth set 25-22 and force a fifth set.

In the fifth set the Pandas jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead but as they did all match, the Wesmen fought back. Winnipeg, with strong serving by Jina Barker and a pair of kills by Lauren Sears went on a 6-0 run to take a 7-4 lead. Alberta clawed their way back to 8-7 when Carleen Kruschel scored three straight points for the Wesmen to give Winnipeg an 11-8 lead. Alberta scored four of the next five points to tie the score at 12-12 and soon after held match point leading 14-13. Kaelyn Gauthier pounded a kill down the line to tie the score at 14-14. A block by Mackenzie Jeffrey and Lauren Sears followed by an attack error gave the Wesmen the fifth set win by a score of 16-14.

Winnipeg will head to Kamloops next week for a pair of afternoon matches against the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack. Alberta will head home to prepare to host the Saskatchewan Huskies.



Women's Basketball at Alberta

The Alberta Pandas avenged last night's loss to the Wesmen by defeating Winnipeg 71-62 Saturday evening in Edmonton, Alberta.

Winnipeg won the opening game of the weekend series 69-66 Friday evening.

The Pandas see their record improve to 15-5. Winnipeg sits with a record of 14-4.

Marisa Haylett led Alberta with 16 points and three steals. Sally Hillier added 15 points, including three-three pointers. Anneka Bakker and Georgia Popovici finished with 13 points.

Catie Gooch led the Wesmen with a game high 20 points, including six-three pointers. Amy Ogidan scored 10 points with seven assists and nine rebounds.

Winnipeg started the game on a great note leading 12-1 before the game was 4:00 minutes old. The Wesmen led 17-9 after the opening quarter.

Alberta recovered in a big way in the second quarter scoring nine unansweredpoints to lead 18-17 with 6:15 left in the opening half. Alberta went on to outscore Winnipeg 20-6 in the frame to take a 29-23 lead at halftime.

The Pandas held off the Wesmen in the third quarter outscoring Winnipeg 20-16 to extend their lead to double-digits at 49-39 after three quarters.

In the final quarter Winnipeg was able to close the gap to five points at 55-50, but the resiliant Pandas held off the Wesmen for the victory and a split in the weekend series.

Winnipeg will host the Fraser Valley Cascades on Friday and Saturday nights at the Duckworth Centre. Tip off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

The Alberta Golden Bears defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 83-49 Saturday night in Edmonton, Alberta.

Alberta won the opening game of the weekend series Friday evening by a score of 99-80.

Alberta see's it's record improve to 14-6. Winnipeg falls to 2-16 in the Canada West Conference standings.

Jordan Baker was a one man wrecking crew for Alberta finishing the game with 31 points and 24 rebounds. Daniel Ferguson added 14 points.

Nick Lother led Winnipeg with 20 points. Lynden Drayton-Barrow was next with nine points. Brayden Duff led the Wesmen with six rebounds.

After a close opening quarter which saw Alberta hold a slim 18-16 lead, the Golden Bears outscored Winnipeg 22-11 in the second quarter to take a 40-27 advantage into the halftime break.

Winnipeg was able to close the gap to ten points 53-43 late in the third quarter, but Alberta scored six unanswered points to blow the game open at 59-43 after three quarters. Alberta showed no mercy in the final quarter outscoring the Wesmen 24-6 to make the final score 83-49.

The Wesmen will host the Fraser Valley Cascades next Friday and Saturday evenings at the Duckworth Centre. Game times are scheduled for 8:00 p.m.

The Alberta Pandas, ranked number six in the country defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-16) Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The victory improves the Pandas record to 8-5. Winnipeg's record falls to 3-10.

Fifth year left side Tiffany Proudfoot led the Pandas with a match high 11 kills. Caitlin Buckell and Jaki Ellis were next with six kills each. Krista Zubick led the team with 11 defensive digs.

The Wesmen were led by first year right side Mackenzie Jeffrey's eight kills. Carleen Kruschel finished with seven. Kaelyn Gauthier led the team with 10 defensive digs. Alix Krahn was in on three blocks.

The Pandas had a strong serving match finishing up with 10 service aces.

Alberta had no trouble in set number one leading 8-1 at the first technical timeout and extended their lead to double digits at the midway point 12-2. The Pandas continued to lead 16-5 at the second break and went on to win the opening set 25-14.

The Wesmen came out more focused in set number two trailing 8-5 at the first timeout and 16-11 at the second break. Alberta was able to hold off the Wesmen and eventually won the second set 25-18.

The Pandas continued their strong play in set number three leading 8-3 and 16-8 at the timeouts. Winnipeg could not mount a comeback on this night with Alberta closing out the match winning the third set 25-16.

The Pandas and Wesmen will wrap up their weekend series Saturday night in the late match. Match time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The number two ranked, Alberta Golden Bears defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-16) at the Duckworth Centre Friday evening in Winnipeg.

The Golden Bears improved their record to 12-1. Winnipeg sits with a record of 2-11.

The Golden Bears were led by fifth year right side Spencer Leiske's match high 12 kills. Jay Olmstead and Mitch Irvine added nine kills. Erik Mattson led the team with six defensive digs. Olmstead, Justin Merta and Simon Lidster were involved in four blocks apiece.  

First year outside Ty Loewen led the Wesmen with eight kills. Matt Dueck added six. Fifth year setter Dan Lother had 26 assists and a match high seven defensive digs.

Alberta was strong at the net finishing with 14 total blocks (10 solo). Winnipeg had five total blocks.

The opening set started out as a battle between the two Canada West rivals. Alberta led 8-6 and 16-13 at the technical timeouts before going on to win the opening set 25-19.

Alberta used their momentum for the opening part in set number two, holding a slim 8-7 lead at the first technical break. The teams traded points to tie the score at 12-12, before Marc Ross scored two of the next three points to give Winnipeg a 14-13 lead. The Golden Bears ran off three straight points to take a 16-14 lead into the second timeout. Mitch Irvine served up a pair of aces to put the Golden Bears up 21-16. Winnipeg made a late charge scoring four of the next five points to cut the Alberta lead to 24-22. Alberta scored the next point to win the second set 25-22.

Set number three was identical to the opening two with Alberta leading at both timeouts by scores of 8-5 and 16-12. Alberta closed out the match winning the final set 25-16. The Golden Bears finished the third set with an attack percentage of .591 with only two errors.

The two teams will face each other on Saturday night in the first match of the evening at 6:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

The Winnipeg Wesmen improved their record to an impressive 14-3 with a hard fought 69-66 victory over the Alberta Pandas Friday evening in Edmonton, Alberta.

Fifth year guard Catie Gooch led the Wesmen with 19 points, eight rebounds, three assists and six steals. Stephanie Kleysen finished with 12 points and four steals. Alex MacIver added 12 points and Kailin Rempel added 10.

Marisa Haylett led the Pandas with a game high 23 points. Georgia Popovici added a double-double 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Winnipeg started the contest on a positive note jumping out to an 18-14 lead after the opening ten minutes. The hometown Pandas narrowed the Wesmen lead in the second quarter, outscoring Winnipeg 16-14 to trail 32-30 at halftime.

After the halftime break, both teams resumed their hard fought battle. Winnipeg held on to a slim 50-49 lead after three quarters but held off the Pandas in the fourth quarter outscoring Alberta 19-17 to make the final 69-66.

Winnipeg, heading into the weekend as the number nine ranked team in the country improves to 14-3. Alberta, ranked number 10 drops to 14-5.

The Wesmen and Pandas will do battle Saturday night in Edmonton. Game time is 7:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time)

The Alberta Golden Bears shot the lights out in the first half as they went on to defeat the Winnipeg Wesmen 99-80 Friday night in Edmonton, Alberta.

Alberta connected on 61% of their shots from the field in the opening half and built a 60-40 lead at halftime.

The victory improves Alberta's record to 13-6. Winnipeg's record falls to 2-15.

Daniel Ferguson led Alberta with a game high 39 points, including seven-three pointers. Jordan Baker finished with a double-double 23 points, 15 rebounds.

Second year forward Brayden Duff led Winnipeg with 21 points, followed by Nick Lother with 19 points.

Winnipeg played a better second half outscoring the Golden Bears 40-39 and shooting an impressive 48% from the field in the final 20 minutes.

The two teams will wrap up their weekend series Saturday evening. Game time is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. (Wpg Time)
