WESMEN 65 Regina 63 (Overtime) Game Statistics
It was only fitting that two of the top teams in the Canada West Conference needed extra time to settle this game. The Winnipeg Wesmen edged the Regina Cougars 65-63 in overtime Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Third year guard Joanna Zalesiak drained a three-pointer from half court at the buzzer to tie the score at 59-59 after regulation time.
The victory by the Wesmen improves their record to 13-3, tied with Regina in the tight Canada West Conference standings.
Fourth year guard Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with 22 points, including three-three pointers. Catie Gooch added 12 points, five assists, three steals. Stephanie Kleysen finished with a double-double 11 points and a game high 17 rebounds.
Joanna Zalesiak led all scorers with a game high 26 points and shared the team league with 11 rebounds and four assists. Gabrielle Gheysen added 11 points. Anne Mercer also had 11 rebounds.
Regina gained the early momentum in the contest racing out to a 21-10 lead after the opening quarter. The Wesmen rallied in the second, scoring 11 unanswered points in the opening five minutes to tie the score at 21-21. The Cougars went up 27-24 late in the quarter only to have Winnipeg answer back on three successful free throws by Gooch followed by a basket by Ashleigh Chicholowski to give Winnipeg their first lead at 29-27. Winnipeg went into the halftime break leading 32-29 after outscoring the Cougars 22-8 in the middle frame.
Both teams showed strong defensive skills in the third quarter with the Wesmen outscoring Regina 13-10 to lead 45-39 after three quarters.
Regina started the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run in a span of 3:40 to take the lead back at 49-45. The teams exchanged baskets till late in the quarter with the Wesmen leading 56-54. catie Gooch nailed a long three-pointer with 37 seconds left to give the Wesmen a 59-54 lead. Zalesiak drained a pair of free-throws followed by her miracle three-pointer to send the game to extra time.
Zalesiak drained a three pointer early on in the extra frame to give the Cougars a 62-59 lead. Winnipeg responded scoring six straight points, four by Amy Ogidan to take a 65-62 lead with over two minutes to play. The Cougars would go on to score one more point to make the final 65-63.
Winnipeg will head to Edmonton next week for a showdown against the Alberta Pandas. Regina will travel to Fraser Valley to take on the Cascades.

WESMEN 75 Regina 90 Game Statistics
The Regina Cougars erased an 11 point halftime deficit to defeat the Winnipeg Wesmen 90-75 Saturday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Winnipeg went into the halftime break leading 49-38, but the Cougars exploded for 35 points in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
The Cougars leave Winnipeg with a pair of wins and sit with a record of 10-6. Winnipeg falls to 2-14.
Jeff Lukomski led the Cougars with 22 points, including seven-three pointers. Paul Gareau added 21 points and eight rebounds. Kris Heshka scored 14 and pulled down eight rebounds.
Winnipeg was led by Kelvin Smith's game high 27 points and nine rebounds. Brayden Duff added 16 points while Lynden Drayton-Barrow finished with 12 points, connecting on four-three pointers.
Winnipeg trailed 16-9 at the 4:00 mark of the opening period but a trio off three-pointers (two by Drayton-Barrow and one by Pawel Gacon) gave the Wesmen an 18-16 lead. Winnipeg continued to play strong and led 24-20 after the opening quarter.
The Wesmen continued to dominate in the second quarter, outscoring the Cougars 25-18 to take a 49-38 lead into the halftime break.
Regina took control of the game early in the third quarter running off 19 unanswered points to open up a 57-49 lead with 3:53 to play in the quarter. The Cougars kept the Wesmen off balance outscoring the home side 35-10 to open up a 73-59 lead after three quarters.
The Cougars closed out the contest outscoring Winnipeg 17-16 in the final frame to complete the comeback victory.
The Cougars will travel to Fraser Valley to take on the Cascades next weekend. Winnipeg will head west to Edmonton to challenge the Alberta Golden Bears on Friday and Saturday.

The University of Regina Cougars defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-21) on Saturday night in Regina Saskatchewan.
Winnipeg won the opening series of the weekend 3-0 Friday night. The weekend split leaves both teams with identical 2-10 records on the season.
The Cougars trailed for the majority of the first set, but scored a 25-23 comeback win after taking four of the set’s final five points. In the second set, the Cougars jumped out to a six-point lead at the second media timeout, but five consecutive points by Winnipeg put the Wesmen right back in it. Regina withstood the Wesmen challenge and came back to win the second set 25-21..
The third set featured 12 tie scores and three lead changes as the two teams were never separated by more than two points before the second media timeout. The Cougars pulled away late and closed out the match winning the third set 25-21.
Jamie Wilkins had a match-high 18 kills for the Cougars. Leon Dyck had 12 kills and tied Lindsey Isaak for the team lead with eight digs.
Marc Ross led Winnipeg in kills for the second consecutive night finishing with 13 kills. Brendan Black had 12 kills while setter Dan Lother had 41 assists and seven digs. Matthew Stubler led all players with nine digs for the Wesmen.
Winnipeg will host the Alberta Golden Bears at the Duckworth Centre on Friday and Saturday. Match time on Friday is 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.

The University of Regina Cougars defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (25-19, 25-13, 14-25, 28-26) on the road in Regina, Saskatchewan Saturday night.
Regina improves their record to 5-7. Winnipeg sees their record fall to 3-9 in the Canada West Conference standings.
The Cougars trailed 21-14 in the fourth set, but a furious comeback prevented the match from going to a fifth set and gave the Cougars a 3-1 win over the Wesmen.
The Cougars reeled off seven points in a row with Tiffany Herman serving and shrugged off a match point at 26-25, ending the match with three consecutive points.
Regina won the first two sets by 25-19 and 25-13 margins before the Wesmen got back into the match with a convincing 25-14 win in the third set.
Meagan Onstad led the Cougars with 16 kills. Setter Tiffany Herman ended up with 45 assists. Rebecca Rink led all players with 17 digs.
Lauren Sears led Winnipeg with 16 kills and recording a match-high eight total blocks. Mackenzie Jeffrey had 15 digs and six blocks. First year setter Brittany Habing had 37 assists and 13 digs.
Winnipeg will head home and prepare to host the Alberta Pandas on Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre. Match time on Friday night is 6:00 p.m. and the following night at 7:30 p.m.

In
a game where both teams struggled for points, the Regina Cougars edged
the Winnipeg Wesmen 54-49 in a key Canada West battle Friday night at
the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.Regina finished the first half with a shooting percentage of 28%. Winnipeg was only successful on 19% from the field. The Cougars led 22-18 at halftime.
The victory by Regina improves their record to 13-2. Winnipeg's record stands at 12-3.
Lindsay Ledingham scored a game high 19 points to lead the Cougars. Joanna Zalesiak added 18 points and 12 rebounds. Anne Mercer led the team on the glass with 13 rebounds.
The Wesmen were led by Amy Ogidan and Alyssa Grant, each scoring 10 points. Stephanie Kleysen grabbed a game high 15 rebounds.
Regina
opened the second half scoring six straight points to open a 28-18 lead
early on. The Wesmen made a charge at the 7:00 mark of the period
trailing 34-29, Catie Gooch scored back-to back baskets to cut the
Cougar lead to 34-32. The Cougars responded with a three point play by
Lindsay Ledingham and a long three-pointer by Zalesiak opened up a
40-35 Cougar lead after three quarters.Both teams battled in a tight defensive fourth quarter. Winnipeg cut the Regina lead to 47-46 with 1:23 left but Gabrielle Gheysen drained a three pointer followed by a bucket by Ledingham to extend their lead to 52-46 with 44 seconds to seal the victory.
The Wesmen and Cougars will wrap up their key weekend series Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

WESMEN 80 Regina 83 Game Statistics
The
Regina Cougars got off to a quick and later hung on for dear life. The
Cougars defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 83-80 Friday night at the
Duckworth Centre.The Cougars led 45-22 at halftime and hung on as a Winnipeg second half rally fell just short.
With the win Regina improves their record to 9-6. Winnipeg's record falls to 2-13.
Paul Gareau led the Cougars with a game high 28 points, and led the team with 10 rebounds. Jeff Lukomski added 15, including four-three pointers and eight assist. Kris Heshka had 14 and Marek Downarowicz added 11 points.
Kelvin Smith led the Wesmen with 23 points, including three-three pointers. Lynden Drayton-Barrow added 16, with four-three pointers. Benny Iko finished with a double-double 15 points, 13 rebounds. Nick Lother had 11 points.
The Cougars took control of the game early on jumping out to a quick 14-0 lead just over five minutes into the game. Regina led 30-12 after the opening quarter and after outscoring the Wesmen 15-10 in the second quarter to lead 45-22 at halftime.
The
Wesmen made their charge just past the midway point of the third
quarter. The Cougars led 57-40 with 3:17 left when Winnipeg scored 10
of the next 12 points to cut the deficit to single digits 59-50. A free
throw by Gareau gave Regina a 60-50 lead after three.The Cougars held a double digit for the first three minutes of the fourth until Winnipeg made another run. Three pointers by Kelvin Smith and Lynden Drayton-Barrow led the Wesmen on a 10-2 run to cut the Cougar lead to 72-70 with 4:26 left. Regina held off the charge and went on to win the opening game of the weekend series.
The two teams will meet up Saturday night in the final game of the two game weekend series. Tip off at the Duckworth Centre is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.

loss (25-16, 25-18, 25-21) to the University of Regina Cougars Friday
night in Regina, Saskatchewan.The victory improves Regina's record to 4-7, Winnipeg's record sits at 3-8.
The Cougars came out strong, scoring a 25-16 win in a first set that saw them hit .400 as a team, then opened up a two-set lead after a 25-18 victory in the second.
Regina led 8-3 at the first media timeout of the third set, but the Wesmen came roaring back. With Mackenzie Jeffrey serving, Winnipeg reeled off nine consecutive points to turn a five-point deficit into a 13-9 advantage. The Wesmen took a 16-15 lead into the second media timeout and scored two quick points after that, but a timeout called by Regina changed the momentum of the set. The Cougars went on a 10-3 run, giving them a 25-21 win in the third set.
Meagan
Onstad led the Cougars with 13 kills and added eight digs, while
Tiffany Herman had 30 assists and Rebecca Rink tied for the match lead
with 10 digs. Sonia Rossy, Mackenzie Jeffrey, and Carleen Kruschel all had six kills for Winnipeg. Setter Brittany Habing had 22 assists and 10 defensive digs..

University of Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the Regina Cougars 3-0 (25-18,
25-21, 31-29) on the road Friday night in Regina Saskatchewan. The Wesmen's record improves to 2-9, Regina falls to 1-10.
Winnipeg came out strong winning the first set 25-18 and following that up with a 25-21 victory in set number two.
The wild third set featured an incredible 21 tie scores and 13 lead changes as the two teams were never separated by more than three points. The Cougars served for the match at 29-28, but a service error tied up the score and the Wesmen got a kill from Nathaniel Therrien and a big solo block by Devin Schmidt to close out the match.
Fifth-year
setter Dan Lother recorded 40 assists in the victory, the second most
by a Canada West player in a three-set match this season. Lother also
added 10 defensive digs. Fourth year outside Marc Ross tied for the
match lead with 14 kills. Second-year libero Matthew Stubler also
finished with 10 defensive digs. Jamie Wilkins had 14 kills to lead the Cougars. Leon Dyck had 13 kills and seven digs, while Joel Colter led the Cougars at the net with a match-leading six blocks.
The Cougars and the Wesmen will meet again on Saturday nigh in the early match at 6:15 p.m.
