WESMEN 62 Victoria 53 Game Statistics
The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a sucessful weekend with a 62-53 victory over the Victoria Vikes Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The victory completes a two game sweep for the Wesmen over the number eight ranked Victoria squad. Winnipeg defeated the Vikes 86-65 in Friday's opening game.
Winnipeg improves their regular season record to 12-2. Victoria sees their record fall to 11-5.
Catie Gooch led the Wesmen with 16 points and three steals. Amy Ogidan finished with a double-double 12 points and 10 rebounds. Stepahnie Kleysen led the team in rebounds with 14.
Debbie Yeboah led the Vikes with a game high 19 points. Jessica Renfrew added 10. Sarah Semeniuk grabbed a game high 15 rebounds.
Both teams battled in the opening stages of the game with Winnipeg leading 20-16 after the opening quarter and holding a 31-28 lead at halftime.
The Vikes opened the second half scoring six of the first eight points to take a 34-33 lead after the opening four minutes. Winnipeg answered right back with a three point play by Mackenzie Prasek, followed by a two pointer by Ogidan to lead 38-34. Debbie Yeboah connected on consecutive shots to tie the score at 38-38. The teams were dead even at 40-40 heading into the final quarter.
In the final quarter the teams battled for the opening six minutes until the Wesmen took control. Ashleigh Chichlowski drained back-to-back three pointers to extend the Wesmen lead to 59-48 with under three minutes to play. Carmen Lapthorne nailed a three-pointer to pull the Vikes closer at 59-51 but Catie Gooch sealed the win with a three pointer with 1:48 left to put the game out of reach.
" We had a tough set of games this weekend but I am really impressed with the way we stuck together. Victoria is a really great team who have some injuries but they fought hard and really challenged us for 40 minutes each night", said Wesmen fourth year guard Amy Ogidan.
Winnipeg will prepare for a huge weekend showdown against the Regina Cougars next Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre. Victoria will host Lethbridge for a pair of games.

WESMEN 64 Victoria 71 Game Statistics
For the second consecutive night the Victoria Vikes used a strong fourth quarter to defeat the Winnipeg Wesmen. The Vikes scored 29 points in the final quarter to defeat the Wesmen 71-64 Saturday night in Winnipeg.
The Vikes went into the final quarter trailing 48-42 but went on to outscore Winnipeg 29-16 in the final quarter.
The victory completes a weekend sweep for Victoria and improves their record to 9-7. Winnipeg's record sits at 2-12.
Ryan Mackinnon led Victoria with 21 points, including three-three pointers. Marco Dolcetti finished with 20.
Kelvin Smith led the Wesmen with 18 points. Nolan Gooding added 13 and Benny Iko had 12 points and nine rebounds.
Winnipeg held a slim 14-13 lead after the opening quarter and picked up the pace in the second quarter outscoring the Vikes 20-14 to carry a 34-27 lead at halftime. Winnipeg shot the lights out in the first half connecting on 56% shooting from the field.
In the third quarter both teams played strong on the defensive side of the ball limiting each team to very few points. Victoria outscored Winnipeg by a slim 15-14 margin to trail 48-42 after three quarters.
Winnipeg held a 60-51 lead 3:15 into the final frame when Victoria made their charge. The Vikes went on a 12-2 run in a span of four minutes to take a 63-62 lead. After a pair of Kelvin Smith free throws put Winnipeg ahead 64-63, Ryan Mackinnon scored five straight points to give Victoria a 68-64 lead with 47 seconds remaining. Victoria hit their free throws at the end to secure the win.
Victoria will host the Lethbridge Pronghorns next weekend. Winnipeg will host the Regina Cougars on Friday and Saturday in Winnipeg.

WESMEN 86 Victoria 65 Game Statistics
The Winnipeg Wesmen extended their winning streak to six games with an impressive 86-65 victory over the University of Victoria Vikes Friday evening in Winnipeg.
The victory improves Winnipeg's record to an impressive 11-2. Victoria's record falls to 11-4 in the tight Canada West Conference standings.
A total team effort paced the Wesmen on this night with four starters scoring in double digits. Fifth year guard Catie Gooch scored a game high 20 points, including four-three pointers, four assists and five steals. Amy Ogidan added 19 points. Rookie sensation Stephanie Kleysen finished with a double-double 17 points and 15 rebounds. Alex MacIver finished the game with 17.
Winnipeg native Debbie Yeboah and Jessica Renfrew led Victoria with 15 points each. Carmen Lapthorne finished with 14, including four-three pointers. Sarah Semeniuk had 11 and nine rebounds.
The game was close for the first three quarters until Winnipeg blew the game open in the fourth quarter.
Winnipeg led 17-12 after the opening ten minutes and outscored Victoria 21-17 in the second quarter to take a 38-29 lead into the halftime break.
In the third quarter Winnipeg held a double digit lead at 45-35 with under seven minutes to play when Victoria mounted a comeback. The Vikes outscored Winnipeg 15-6 in a span of four minutes to cut the Wesmen lead to 51-50. Winnipeg led after thirty minutes 55-50.
Winnipeg outscored Victoria 31-15 in the final quarter to secure the victory in the opening game of the weekend between two of the top teams in the Canada West conference.
"Tonight was a good win. The score does not indicate the battle between two highly competitive teams. Tomorrow night will be another battle against a very disciplined and well coached team", added Wesmen head coach Tanya McKay.
The weekend series will continue on Saturday night with tip off scheduled for 6:00 p.m. from the Duckworth Centre.

A strong fourth quarter lifted the Victoria Vikes to a 74-57 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The Vikes outscored Winnipeg 23-9 in the final 10 minutes to take control of a relatively close game after three quarters.
Victoria with the win improves to 8-7, Winnipeg's record sits at 2-11.
Ryan MacKinnon led Victoria with a game high 18 points and was strong on defense with four steals. Pierce Anderson added 15 points. Mike Berg finished with 12. Wendall Thomas led the team in rebounds with 10.
Winnipeg was led by Brayden Duff's 13 points. Nolan Gooding and Benny Iko finished with 12 points a piece. Iko led the team with a game high 13 rebounds to complete the double-double.
The Vikes led 16-13 after a tight defensive opening quarter and went on to outscore Winnipeg 23-17 in the second quarter to open up a 39-30 lead at halftime.
Victoria continued their strong play in the early stages of the third quarter opening up a 47-32 lead until the Wesmen fought back scoring seven unanswered points to cut the lead to 49-39. Winnipeg continued to fight back even more outscoring Victoria 9-2 down the stretch to trail 51-48 after three quarters.
In the final quarter Victoria scored 23 points and holding the Wesmen to a paltry nine points to secure the win.
"We were not able to sustain the level of energy that we needed to play with in order to compete with a team of that caliber", said Wesmen head coach Mike Raimbault.
The two teams will wrap up their weekend series Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
