Men's Volleyball vs Budo University (Japan)
Budo Univ def WESMEN 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 26-24)

The Winnipeg Wesmen finished the preliminary round of the University of Saskatchewan Invitational Tournament with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 26-24) loss to Budo University (Japan) Saturday morning in Saskatoon.

Winnipeg will face the Saskatchewan Huskies in the third place match this evening at 6:00 p.m.
 
Women's Volleyball vs Brandon   - Exhibition

Brandon def WESMEN 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-12)

The Brandon Bobcats defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-12) in an exhibition match Saturday night in MacGregor, Manitoba.

Carleen Kruschel led the Wesmen with 14 kills. Sonia Rossy and Lauren Sears each had nine kills.

The two teams played two more additional sets in which Brandon won by scores of 26-24 and 15-7.

Men's Volleyball vs Saskatchewan - Third Place Match

Saskatchewan def WESMEN 3-2 (20-25, 25-21, 25-20, 33-35, 16-14)

The Winnipeg Wesmen dropped a tough 3-2 (20-25, 25-21, 25-20, 33-35, 16-14) decision to the Saskatchewan Huskies in the third place match at the University of Saskatchewan Invitational Tournament Saturday night in Saskatoon.

Fourth year outside hitter Marc Ross was named to the tournament all-star team.

The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a weekend sweep against the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack with a 65-58 victory Saturday night in Kamloops, British Columbia.

The Wesmen defeated the Wolfpack 66-61 in Friday's game.

The victory improves Winnipeg's record to an impressive 10-2. Thompson Rivers sits with an even record of 7-7.

Alyssa Grant led the way for the Wesmen with 16 points. Amy Ogidan was the spark for the team scoring 13 points, grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out five assists. Alex MacIver led Winnipeg with nine rebounds.

Diane Schuetze led Thompson Rivers with 15 points. Jen Ju finished with 12, Kaitlyn Widsten added 11. Kailey Colonna led the team in rebounds with 10.

Winnipeg jumped out to a quick 14-2 lead in the opening six minutes. The Wolfpack regrouped scoring 10 of the next 13 points to cut the Wesmen lead to 17-12 after the opening quarter.

In the second quarter the Wolfpack scored five unanswered points to take their first lead of the game at 18-17. The teams struggled for points in the final half of the second quarter with the Wesmen taking a 28-23 lead into the halftime break.

The stubborn Wolfpack squad would not go away in the third quarter. Diane Scheutze scored nine points in the quarter to keep the home team in the game. The Wolfpack outscored the Wesmen 19-16 to trail 44-42 after thirty minutes of play.

In the final quarter the teams battled to 49-49 until the Wesmen scored six unanswered points to open up a 55-49 lead. A pair of three pointers by Jen Ju pulled the Wolfpack to within a point at 56-55 but five straight points by Mackenzie Prasek with over a minute remaining sealed the victory for the Wesmen.

Note: Winnipeg was playing without Friday's star Catie Gooch who sat out the game with a lower body injury. Winnipeg will head home to prepare for next weekend's showdown against the Victoria Vikes at the Duckworth Centre on Friday and Saturday.

WESMEN 108  Thompson Rivers 99 (Overtime)  Game Statistics

The Winnipeg Wesmen erased a 14 point halftime deficit and needed an extra frame to down the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack 108-99 Saturday evening in Kamloops, British Columbia.

The Wesmen trailed 52-38 after two quarters and forced overtime with the score tied 88-88 at the end of regulation time.

The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 2-10. Thompson Rivers falls to 2-12.

It was a total team effort with six Wesmen players scoring in double-digits. Lynden Drayton-Barrow and Kelvin Smith led the way with 25 points each. Nick Lother added 17, Nolan Gooding had 16, Brayden Duff and Benny Iko added 14 and 11 respectively.

Greg Stewart led the Wolfpack with 21 points. Chas Kok finished with 18. Brett Rouault and Brett Parker each added 17 points.

Winnipeg was in trouble early on trailing 29-13 after the opening quarter and 52-38 at the halftime break.

The Wesmen made their charge in the third quarter chipping away at the 14 point Wolfpack lead. Kelvin Smith drained two-three pointers in the quarter to help Winnipeg outscore the Wolfpack 26-17 to cut the lead to 69-64.

In the fourth quarter the teams took turns scoring baskets at a rapid pace. The Wolfpack built a 76-66 lead, until Smith drained two more three pointers to pull the Wesmen to 78-74. In the closing minute of regulation time Thompson Rivers led 87-82, when a jumper by Benny Iko and a driving layup by Nick Lother pulled the Wesmen closer trailing 87-86. After a Winnipeg defensive stand, Lynden Drayton-Barrow scored the tying basket with 17 seconds left to force overtime.

Winnipeg outscored the Wolfpack 20-11 in the extra frame. Benny Iko scored eight points in the overtime period. A personal and technical foul to Greg Stewart led to Lother draining four free throws to clinch the victory.

Winnipeg will host the Victoria Vikes for two games next week on Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre. Game time on both nights is 8:00 p.m.

The Brandon Bobcats defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (25-18, 25-16, 22-25, 25-21) in the opening match at the University of Saskatchewan Invitational Tournament Friday afternoon in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Winnipeg will take on the host University of Saskatchewan Huskies in the evening match on Friday.

The host Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-2 (25-17, 23-25, 18-25, 25-20, 18-16) in a tough five set evening match Friday night at the University of Saskatchewan Invitational Tournament in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Winnipeg (0-2) will take on Budo Univ (Japan) Saturday morning before moving on to the medal round in the evening.

Catie Gooch scored a game high 25 points to lead the Winnipeg Wesmen to a 66-61 victory over the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack Friday night in Kamloops, British Columbia.

The fifth year guard was on fire connecting on seven-of-nine from three point territory. She also added five assists and four steals.

The victory improves the Wesmen’s record to 9-2. Thompson Rivers falls to 7-6.

Kaitlin Rempel added 11 points. Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen in rebounds with 11.

Kaitlyn Widsten led the Wolfpack with 19 points, including five-three pointers. Diane Schuetze added 11.

The opening basket was not scored until 1:40 into the opening quarter. The Wolfpack held a 7-3 lead late in the quarter until Catie Gooch took over scoring a three pointer and dishing out a pair of assists to lead the Wesmen to an 11-7 lead with 23 seconds remaining in the opening quarter. Winnipeg led 12-9 after the opening ten minutes.

After a sloppy opening quarter, the teams found their groove in the second. Winnipeg held a five point lead on two occasions in the opening six minutes of the quarter and extended their lead to 24-17 with less than three minutes to play. After a timeout by Thompson Rivers, the Wolfpack outscored the Wesmen 8-3 down the stretch to make the score at halftime 27-25 in Winnipeg’s favor.

Catie Gooch scored eight points in the opening four minutes to give the Wesmen their largest lead of the game at 38-29. The Wolfpack scored five unanswered points to cut the Wesmen lead to 38-34 at the midway point of the third quarter. Another three pointer by Gooch combined with a pair of free throws by Kaitlin Rempel gave the Wesmen a 48-41 lead after three quarters.

The Wolfpack opened up the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run to cut the Wesmen lead to 48-47. Alex MacIver scored Winnipeg’s first points of the quarter at the 3:30 mark to lead 50-47. The Wolfpack scored six straight points to take their first lead since early in the opening quarter 53-50. The Wolfpack extended their lead to 60-54 with three minutes left when Gooch nailed a three pointer followed by a Stephanie Kleysen two pointer to cut the deficit to 60-59. Gooch scored another three pointer to give the Wesmen a 62-60 lead with under two minutes to play. Amy Ogidan and Kaitlin Rempel were perfect on their foul shots in the final seconds to close out the win.

The two teams will wrap up their weekend series on Saturday night. Game time is 7:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time).

The Winnipeg Wesmen dropped a heart breaking 88-87 decision to the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack Friday evening in Kamloops, British Columbia.

Winnipeg had a chance to win the game at the buzzer but the potential game winning shot just missed.

Thompson Rivers improves to 2-11, Winnipeg falls to 1-10.

Chas Kok led Thompson Rivers with a game high 38 points, including four three pointers. Fifth year post Greg Stewart finished with a double-double 21 points and 16 rebounds.

Nick Lother led the Wesmen with 27 points, five assists and three steals. Nolan Gooding finished with 17 points and Kelvin Smith added 11, with a trio of three-pointers.

Winnipeg had the early advantage in the contest leading 17-12 after the opening quarter. The Wesmen kept the pressure on early in the second frame. A three pointer by Kelvin Smith increased Winnipeg’s lead to 24-15 with six minutes left in the opening half. Winnipeg increased their lead to double-digits, 29-19 when the Wolfpack scored five unanswered points to cut the Wesmen lead to 29-24. Winnipeg went into the halftime break leading 33-30.

The Wolfpack made their move in an explosive third quarter, outscoring the Wesmen 32-29 to tie the score at 62-62 after thirty minutes of play.

In a wild fourth quarter both teams took turns holding the lead. A long three pointer by Kok with four minutes remaining tied the score at 77-77. The teams exchanged baskets with the Wolfpack holding on to an 82-79 lead with two minutes remaining. Nolan Gooding scored eight points in the final 1:50 for the Wesmen to give Winnipeg an 87-86 lead but Kok drained a pair of three throws with nine seconds left to give the Wolfpack an 88-87 lead.

The two teams will close out their weekend series Saturday night. Tip off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time)
