Women's Volleyball at Manitoba
Manitoba def WESMEN 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-22) Final Match Statistics
The Manitoba Bisons opened up the volleyball portion of the 20th Annual Duckworth Challenge with an 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-22) victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Friday night at the University of Manitoba.
The victory improves Manitoba's record to 6-4. Winnipeg heads into the December break with a record of 3-7.
Rachel Cockrell led Manitoba with 12 kills. Tricia Mayba and Kristi Hunter added seven kills. Melissa Unrau led the Bisons with 12 defensive digs. Ashley Voth was in on six blocks.
The Wesmen were led by first year right side Mackenzie Jeffrey's match high 14 kills. Lauren Sears added eight kills. Carleen Kruschel finished with 14 defensive digs. First year setter Brittany Habing set up 35 assists.Winnipeg started the match on a positive note jumping out to a quick 4-1 lead in the opening set. Manitoba went on a 7-1 run to take an 8-5 lead into the first technical timeout. The Bisons held the advantage leading 16-12 at the second break of the opening set. Winnipeg fought back late in the set trailing 22-18, the Wesmen scored a pair of points to cut the deficit to 22-20. Manitoba eventually went on to win set number one 25-22.
The second started out with both teams exchanging points to the first technical timeout with Winnipeg holding onto a slim 8-7 lead. Manitoba scored five of the next six points to lead 12-9 and carried their momentum into the second break leading 16-13. Manitoba held their largest lead of the set at 22-17 and went onto win the second set 25-19.The two cross town rivals continued their battle in the third set with Manitoba holding onto slim 8-7 and 16-15 leads at the technical timeouts. The Bisons went on a 4-1 run to increase their lead to 20-16 late in the set. Lauren Sears brought the Wesmen back to life scoring on back to back kills to make the score 23-20 and Winnipeg got even closer on a Manitoba attacking error to cut the lead to 23-21. The Wesmen comeback stalled as the Bisons went on to win the third set 25-22.
Mackenzie Jeffrey (Winnipeg) and Rachel Cockrell (Manitoba) were named the Duckworth Challenge Players of the Game.

The Manitoba Bisons defeated the visiting Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-14) in the men's volleyball portion of the 20th Annual Duckworth Challenge Friday evening at the University of Manitoba.
Manitoba heads into the holiday break with a record of 9-1. Winnipeg finishes the first half with a record of 1-9.
The Bisons were led by the trio of Dane Pischke, Joseph Brooks and Ryan Munt who each finished the match with eight kills. Munt and Chris Voth led the team with six digs. Brooks was in on ten blocks. Setter Chris Komishon finished with 33 assists.
First year middle Erik Wiebe led the Wesmen with seven kills.Ty Loewen and Tom Douglas-Powell added six kills. Dan Lother and Marc Ross led the Wesmen with six digs apiece. Lother set up 28 assists.The opening set began with the two teams trading points right up until the first technical, when the Bisons led 8-7. Manitoba gained momentum for the remainder of the set and went on to win the set by a score of 25-16.
Things seemed to be going in a different direction in the second, as the Wesmen took the lead at the first technical timeout, 8-7. Manitoba regained the lead but a determined Wesmen squad stayed with the Bisons for a good portion of the set.The Bisons kept the Wesmen off balance and won the second set 25-19.
In the third set Manitoba raced out to a quick 7-0 lead and never looked back winning the match by taking the third set by a score of 25-14.
Dan Lother (Winnipeg) and Joseph Brooks (Manitoba) were named the Duckworth Challenge Players of the Game.Note: The 20th Annual Duckworth Challenge Trophy was awarded to the Manitoba Bisons. The Bisons won this years competition by a score of 3-1.

An explosive opening quarter propelled the Winnipeg Wesmen to a 67-44 victory over the Manitoba Bisons in the basketball portion of the 20th Annual Duckworth Challenge in front of 1400 fans at the Duckworth Centre Thursday night.
Winnipeg jumped out to a 22-7 lead after the opening ten minutes and never looked back.
The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 8-2 heading into the holiday break. Manitoba falls to 3-7.
Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with a game high 18 points. Catie Gooch added 12 points, four assists and three steals. Stephanie Kleysen picked up her fourth double-double of the season finishing with 11 points, 17 rebounds plus two assists and five steals. Alex MacIver had 10 points.
Kayla Klassen led Manitoba with 11 points, including three-three pointers. Allison Balasko finished with a double-double 10 points and 11 rebounds. Mubo Ilelaboye added nine points.
After a tight and defensive second quarter Winnipeg went into the halftime break leading 32-16.
Winnipeg's stingy defense held Manitoba to 4-of-24 (17%) shooting from the field in the opening half.
The Wesmen kept the pressure on the Bison's holding a double-digit lead for the entire second half to go on to the 67-44 victory.
Stephanie Kleysen (Winnipeg) and Allison Balasko (Manitoba) were named the Duckworth Challenge Players of the Game.

The Manitoba Bisons evened the 20th Annual Duckworth Challenge with an 80-62 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Thursday night in front of 1498 spectators at the Duckworth Centre Thursday night.
The Wesmen beat Manitoba 67-44 in the women's game earlier in the evening.
Manitoba improves to 7-3 on the season. Winnipeg sits at 1-9.
Four Manitoba players figured in double-digit scoring led by Jonar Huertas with a game high 17 points. Eric Garcia added 15, Keith Omoerah had 13 and Sean Maxwell finished with a double-double 10 points, 10 rebounds.
Winnipeg also had four players in double digit scoring. Brayden Duff, Lynden Drayton-Barrow and Nick Lother each scored 12 points. Benny Iko added 11 points. Duff grabbed a team high 13 rebounds to complete the double-double.
Manitoba jumped out to a quick 8-3 lead early in the first period and extended their lead to double-digits at 23-12 with over two minutes to play in the opening quarter. Manitoba led 25-17 after the opening ten minutes.
Winnipeg rebounded in a big way in the second quarter going on an 8-2 run in the opening six minutes to cut the Manitoba lead to 27-25. Winnipeg kept chipping away and grabbed their first lead of the game on a pair of free throws by Nick Lother late in the second quarter. Winnipeg went into the halftime break leading 33-32.
The teams started the third quarter very slowly with Winnipeg clinging to a 39-38 lead four minutes into the quarter. Manitoba put the pressure on the Wesmen soon after outscoring the home team 16-7 down the stretch to lead 55-46 after three quarters.
The Bisons closed out the contest outscoring the Wesmen 25-16 in the final quarter to make the final score 80-62.
Brayden Duff (Winnipeg) and Richard Reimer (Manitoba) were named the Duckworth Challenge Players of the Game.
