A total team effort carried the Winnipeg Wesmen to a 68-64 victory over the Trinity Western University Spartans Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The victory improves the Wesmen's record to 7-2. Trinity Western falls to 1-11.

Four Wesmen players figured in double-digits led by second year forward Alyssa Grant's career high 18 points. Fifth year post Alex MacIver had her second strong game in a row finishing with a double-double 14 points, 11 rebounds. Amy Ogidan and Stephanie Kleysen added 11 and 10 points respectively.

Tiffany Olsen led the Spartans with 15 points. Keely Goertzen and Rochelle Thoutenhoff each contributed 11 points.

Winnipeg started out the contest scoring eight straight points and led 18-6 after the opening quarter.

Alyssa Grant took over in the second period scoring seven straight points in a span of 1:30 to increase the Wesmen lead to 29-14. The Spartans made the game interesting outscoring the Wesmen 11-4 down the stretch to cut the Wesmen lead to 33-25 at halftime.

The Spartans scored the opening basket of the second half to cut the Wesmen lead to six points (33-27). Winnipeg responded scoring six straight points to increase their lead to 39-27. A Grant three-pointer pushed the Winnipeg lead to 50-37 with 43 seconds left. Winnipeg held a 52-39 lead after three quarters.

Winnipeg carried the play for the opening six minutes of the final quarter until the Spartans made a move. A four point play by Emily Knauff cut the Winnipeg lead to 59-53 with 3:20 left. The teams exchanged baskets to 61-55 when Ashleigh Chichlowski nailed a three pointer to give Winnipeg a 64-55 lead. A Spartan three-pointer cut the lead to 64-58 and a few moments later a three pointer by Corina Reimer made the score 66-61. The Spartans charge came to halt as the Wesmen were able to run out the clock making the final score 68-64.

Winnipeg will host the Manitoba Bisons on Thursday night in the basketball portion of the 20th Duckworth Challenge. Trinity Western will host Fraser Valley next Friday and Saturday to close out the first half schedule.

The Winnipeg Wesmen put in a better effort but were defeated 93-77 by the Trinity Western University Spartans Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Trinity Western improves to 10-2, Winnipeg sits with a record of 1-8.

The Spartans were led by the trio of Jacob Doerksen, Calvin Westbrook and Tyrell Mara who combined for 65 of the Spartans 93 points on the evening. Doerksen finished with a game high 24 points and 17 rebounds. Westbrook added 21 and Mara finished with 20 points.

Four Wesmen players figured in double-digits led by Kelvin Smith with 23 points, including five-three pointers. Benny Iko added 18 points and a team leading eight rebounds. Lynden Drayton-Barrow and Nolan Gooding each scored 16 points.

The Spartans led 22-16 after the opening quarter but the Wesmen outscored Trinity Western 26-24 in the second quarter to trail 46-42 at halftime.

A pair of free-throws by Drayton-Barrow early in the third quarter made the score 48-44 but soon after the Spartans went on a 13-4 run to open up a 61-48 lead just past the midway mark of the third quarter. A three pointer by Gooding cut the lead to ten at 61-51 but a 14-2 run by the Spartans put them ahead 75-53 after three quarters. Winnipeg was able to close the gap to 11 points in the fourth quarter on two occasions but the Spartans held on for the 93-77 victory.

The Wesmen will close out their first half schedule on Thursday night against the Manitoba Bisons at the 20th Duckworth Challenge at the Duckworth Centre. The Spartans will host the Fraser Valley Cascades starting next Friday for two games.

It took a long five sets, but the No. 2 ranked Trinity Western Spartans edged the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-2 (25-21, 15-25, 25-19, 25-27, 15-12) in a five set thriller Saturday night in Langley, British Columbia.

The win moves TWU’s record to 9-1 on the year in the Canada West standings, while the loss drops Winnipeg to 3-6.

Kara JansenVanDoorn led the Spartans with 19 kills. Chelsea Wand was next with 17. Amy Leschied and Alicia Perrin added 12 and 10 kills respectively. Andrea Ball had a match high 24 digs. Perrin led the team with six blocks.

Fourth year middle Lauren Sears led the Wesmen with 16 kills. Carleen Kruschel finished with 23 defensive digs and three service aces. Alix Krahn had four blocks to lead the Wesmen.

" It was a heart breaker for us tonight, playing well, going the distance and coming up a little short. We improved from Friday", said Wesmen Head Coach Diane Scott.

The first set saw Trinity Western take early momentum – opening up a 15-11 lead – only to have Winnipeg battle back and turn the match into a tight contest in the latter stages. But with the game tied 20-20, and Winnipeg coming off a 6-2 run to even the score, TWU pulled away late with a 5-1 run to win the opening set 25-21.

In the second set with Trinity Western leading 4-2, the Wesmen went on a 6-0 run to take a four-point lead into the first break and never relinquished momentum or the advantage. Winnipeg never looked back winning the second set 25-15.

In the third set the Spartans trailed 8-7 at the first break but rallied with four straight points to take a lead they would hold for the rest of the set. The Spartans went on to win the third set 25-19.

Winnipeg came out on fire in the fourth set opening up an 8-1 lead at the first technical timeout. The Spartans rallied to get back into the game, tying it up at 15-15. The two teams exchanged points to 25-25 when Winnipeg scored the fin al two points, one on a kill by Alix Krahn followed by an attack error by the Spartans to win the set 27-25.

In the fifth set, Winnipeg jumped out to a 4-1 lead but Trinity Western rallied to hold a slim 8-7 lead at the timeout. The teams battled to 12-11, for Trinity who went on to score three of the next four points to win the deciding set 15-12.

Winnipeg’s next match is next Friday at Manitoba in the volleyball portion of the 20th Duckworth Challenge.

The Winnipeg Wesmen were defeated 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-23) by the No. 3 ranked Trinity Western Spartans Saturday night in Langley, British Columbia.

The win improves Trinity Western’s record to 8-2 while Winnipeg’s record stands at 1-8.

Trinity Western’s Rudy Verhoeff finished the match with a team-leading eight kills and setter Ben Ball had 35 assists. John Wiebe finished with 19 defensive digs

Winnipeg’s Ty Loewen led the team with nine kills while Marc Ross had eight and Devin Schmidt had seven. Nathaniel Therrien had a team-high 11 digs and setter Dan Lother had 27 assists.

In the opening set Trinity Western stormed out to a 10-3 lead and led by at least five points the rest of the way. The Spartans went on to win the opening set 25-16.

The Spartans carried their momentum into the second set and once again came out on top by a set score of 25-14.

After falling behind 2-0 the Wesmen did well in the third and final set to keep the game tight, but ultimately the Spartans were too much too often as TWU scraped out a 25-23 final set win.

Winnipeg will head home to prepare to face the Manitoba Bisons on Friday night in the volleyball portion of the 20th Duckworth Challenge at the U of M.

Final Game Statistics

The Winnipeg Wesmen were in complete control in a 62-34 victory over the Trinity Western University Spartans Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The Wesmen led 24-0 after the opening quarter and extended their lead to 39-10 at halftime.

Fifth year post Alex MacIver led the Wesmen with 16 points. Amy Ogidan added nine while Catie Gooch added eight. First year guard Stephanie Kleysen led the team in rebounds with 11.

The Spartans were led by Corina Reimer's double-double 11 points, 11 rebounds. Janelle Traber added 10 points and four steals.

Winnipeg was impressive 16-of-24 (67%) from the field in the opening half. The Spartans struggled connecting on 4-of-25 (16%).

Winnipeg had the advantage in rebounds 47-35, including 30-19 on the defensive boards.

The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 6-2. The Spartans fall to 1-10.

The Wesmen and Spartans will complete their weekend series on Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

The seventh ranked Trinity Western University Spartans defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 93-70 Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The Spartans improve to 9-2, Winnipeg's record sits at 1-7.

Jacob Doerksen led the Spartans with a game high 30 points. Tonner Jackson added 16. Kyle Coston and Tyrell Mara led the team with eight rebounds each. Mara finished with eight assists.

Benny Iko was the top scorer for Winnipeg finishing with 17 points. Nolan Gooding added 14 points to go along with five assists and three steals. Kelvin Smith had 13 points.

In the opening frame the Spartans jumped out to a 24-14 lead and maintained their double-digit lead early in the second quarter (27-17) when the Wesmen made a move. Winnipeg went on a 9-1 run in a span of 2:00 to cut the Spartan lead to 28-26. Four straight points by Doerksen increased the lead to six at 32-26 but the Wesmen fought back once again with back to back baskets by Pawel Gacon and Benny Iko to cut the Spartan lead to 32-31 with over four minutes to play in the opening half. The Wesmen scored five unanswered points before halftime to trail 41-40.

The Spartans opened the second half scoring seven straight points to open a 48-40 lead and never looked back outscoring Winnipeg 29-17 to lead by a score of 70-57 after three quarters. Trinity Western outscored the Wesmen 23-13 in the final quarter to close out the contest.

The two teams will meet up again on Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.

The Trinity Western University Spartans defeated the visiting Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (25-13, 25-15, 18-25, 25-15) Friday night in Langley, British Columbia.

The number two ranked Spartans improve to 8-1. The loss drops the Wesmen to 3-5.

Amy Leschied led the Spartans with a match high 15 kills. Kara JansenVanDoorn was next with 13 kills. Andrea Ball had a match high 29 defensive digs for the Spartans.

Carleen Kruschel led the Wesmen with eight kills and 12 defensive digs. Sonia Rossy finished with six kills. Alix Krahn was in on a match high five blocks.

The first set was tightly contested through the first half of the game. Trinity Western led 8-6 at the first timeout, but the Wesmen gathered momentum and took a 12-9 lead and forced the TWU into a timeout. After the timeout the Spartans went on a 16-1 run to close out the first set by a score of 25-13.

The Spartans led 8-4 at the first timeout of the second set but Winnipeg went on a run to close the gap to 9-7 on a Brittany Habing service ace. The Spartans went on a run of their own and built a 14-9 lead. Winnipeg got the next two points to trail 14-11, but could get no closer as the Spartans finished the set with a 11-4 run to take the second set 25-15.

The Wesmen found their game in the third set. Trinity Western led at both technical break 8-4 and 16-14. Winnipeg did not give up going on an 8-0 run to take an 22-16 lead. TWU closed to four points, 22-18, but Winnipeg went on to score the final three points to win the set 25-18.

Winnipeg carried their momentum into the fourth set and after a kill by Lauren Sears had an 8-6 lead at the first break. The  Spartans regrouped going on a 10-3 run to take a 16-11 lead into the second break. The Spartans eventually won the fourth set 25-15.

The two teams will meet again Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time)

The Winnipeg Wesmen were defeated 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-20) by the Trinity Western University Spartans Friday evening in Langley, British Columbia.

The win improves the Spartans record to 7-2 while the loss leaves Winnipeg with a record of 1-7.

Mikiah Schalk, Josh Doornenball, Rudy Verhoeff and Nicholas Del Bianco each had six kills to lead the Spartans.

Tom Douglas-Powell led Winnipeg with seven kills and five defensive digs. Matt Stubler had two blocks.

The Spartans had the advantage early in the match leading 8-7 at the first break of the opening set and extended their lead to 16-12 at the second timeout. The Spartans closed out the set on an 9-3 run to win the set 25-15.

In set number two the Spartans held the lead at both timeouts 8-4 and 16-7 before eventually winning the set by an identical score of 25-15.

The third set was even from the start as Trinity Western held a slim 8-7 lead at the first timeout before the Wesmen made a move taking the lead at the second break by a score of 16-15. The Spartans regrouped scoring four straight points to take a 19-16 lead late in the set and closed out the match winning the third set 25-20.

The two teams will meet Saturday night to close out the weekend series. Match tike is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time)
