The UBC Thunderbirds completed a weekend sweep with a hard fought four set victory (25-20, 23-25, 25-17, 25-22) over the Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Shanice Marcelle led the UBC attack with a match high 18 kills. Lisa Barclay followed with 16 kills. Danielle Richards finished with 12 defensive digs and Jessica von Schilling led UBC with five blocks.
Winnipeg was led by Sonia Rossy's 15 kills and 11 defensive digs. Carleen Kruschel added 13 kills. Lauren Sears had 11 kills and three blocks. Brittany Habing and Mackenzie Jeffrey also had 11 digs.
UBC improves to 4-2 in the regular season standings, Winnipeg falls to 1-4.
The T-Birds opened the match with a five point first set win 25-20 but the tough Wesmen squad battled in the second set, Carleen Kruschel and Lauren Sears combined for seven kills after the second technical to propel Winnipeg to a 25-23 set win.
In the third set UBC held the lead at both technicals winning the third set 25-17.
Winnipeg came out storming in the fourth set holding leads of 8-6 and 16-11 at the technical timeouts. Late in the set, things turned, with Winnipeg leading 21-15, UBC went on to score ten of the next eleven points to win the fourth set 25-22.
Despite the loss Wesmen Head Coach was pleased with her teams effort.
" Today we played our best match in the last few weeks. We are showing signs that we have turned a corner. Our team competed and I am very pleased with the effort", added Scott.
Winnipeg will host the Saskatchewan Huskies next Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre. UBC will head back to Manitoba to face the Bisons for two matches.

The UBC Thunderbirds picked up their second straight win with a four set (20-25, 25-17, 25-21, 26-24) win over the Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday afternoon in Winnipeg.
Milo Warren led the T-Birds with a match high 20 kills, Ben Chow was next with 11. Libero Blair Bann finished with 18 digs. Yari Kozel was strong at the net picking up four blocks.
First year outside Ty Loewen led the Wesmen with 13 kills and three blocks. Marc Ross added 12 kills and Tom Douglas-Powell finished with 11 kills. Matt Stubler led Winnipeg in digs with 12.
The victory improves UBC's record to 2-4. Winnipeg sits at 0-5.
The hometown Wesmen were impressive in the opening set finishing with an attack percentage of .385 on their way to an opening set win by a score of 25-20.
Winnipeg carried the momentum into the early stages of the second set. The Wesmen held a slim 8-7 lead at the first timeout only to see the T-Birds battle back to lead at the second break 16-11. UBC kept the pressure on the Wesmen and went on to win the second set 25-17.
In the third set the two teams exchanged points to 18-17 in favor of UBC, who reeled off five straight points to take a 23-17 lead late in the set. The T-Birds went on to win the third set 25-21.
The fourth set was a classic battle between Canada West rivals, UBC held a 24-22 lead but the Wesmen did not give up fighting off three match points but could not gain the advantage as UBC closed out the match winning the fourth set 26-24.
Winnipeg will look to get in the win column next Friday and Saturday against the Saskatchewan Huskies at the Duckworth Centre. UBC will challenge the Manitoba Bisons at the U of M.

The sixth ranked UBC Thunderbirds defeated the tenth ranked Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-10, 25-11) Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The win moves the T-Birds record to 3-2. The loss drops the Wesmens record to 1-3.
In the opening set, a block by fourth year middle Alix Krahn gave Winnipeg the early advantage at 8-7 at the first timeout. A kill by Carleen Kruschel gave the Wesmen a 16-14 lead at the second break. The T-Birds scored two straight points to tie the score at 16-16, until Winnipeg rallied off two straight points to make the score 18-16. The teams exchanged points to 23-21, UBC evened the score at 23-23 on kills by Jessica von Schilling and Kristine Johnson . The Wesmen closed out the set with two straight points to win the opening set by a score of 25-23. Winnipeg's Alix Krahn had four blocks in the opening set.
In the second set UBC led early at 8-5 at the opening timeout. Winnipeg found their game in the middleof the set with UBC leading 10-7, the Wesmen went on a 6-0 run to take the lead back at 13-10 at the second break. The momentum in the set quickly turned the T-Birds way scoring eight straight points to take a 21-16 lead late in the set. UBC eventually went on to win the fourth second set 25-18.
The third set started out a close affair with UBC holding on to an 8-6 lead at the first technical timeout. A few moments later it was a different story, UBC went on an 8-2 run to take a 16-8 lead at the second timeout. The T-Birds went on to win the third set 25-10.
UBC continued their impressive play in the fourth set, racing out to an 8-3 lead at the first break and extended their lead to 16-6 at the second timeout. UBC closed out the match winning the set 25-11.
Third year outside Shanice Marcelle led UBC with a match high 20 kills. Rayel Quiring was next with 14 kills and Lisa Barclay added 13 kills and a match high 16 digs.
Second year left side Carleen Kruschel led the Wesmen with nine kills. Sonia Rossy had 13 digs to lead the Wesmen in that department. Alix Krahn finished with a match high four blocks.
The two teams will meet up Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre in the second game of the weekend series.

The UBC Thunderbirds picked up their first win of the regular season with a 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-20) victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The win improves UBC's record to 1-4, Winnipeg falls to 0-4.
Winnipeg started the match in impressive fashion leading 8-5 at the first timeout and continued to lead at the second break by a score of 16-13. Winnipeg grabbed an early advantage in the match winning the opening set 25-20.
UBC fought back in set number two and led at both timeouts 8-6 and extended their lead to 16-11 at the second break. Winnipeg could get no closer than five points as the T-Birds evened the match winning the second set 25-18.
In the third set UBC carried the play early on leading 8-4 at the first timeout. The Wesmen went on a 10-8 run to cut into the lead trailing 16-14 at the second timeout. The teams exchanged points to 23-23 late in the set but two consecutive Wesmen attacking errors gave the T-Birds the third set by a score of 25-23.
The Wesmen started the fourth set out on the right foot leading 8-7 at the first technical only to see UBC fight back to take the lead back at 16-12 at the second break. The Wesmen managed to close the gap to 18-15 but UBC eventually went on to win the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth set.
Ben Chow and Milo Warren led UBC with a match high 15 kills. Joe Cordonier led the team in digs with 17 . Yari Kozel was in on a team leading five blocks.
Marc Ross and Devin Schmidt led the Wesmen with 10 kills each. Setter Dan Lother had a team leading 11 digs. Tom Douglas Powell had four blocks to lead Winnipeg in that department.
The two teams will wrap up their two match series Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.
