It was not pretty but a win is a win. The Wesmen completed a weekend sweep by defeating the UBC Thunderbirds 57-50 Saturday night in Vancouver. Winnipeg won the opening game of the series Friday night by a score of 71-61.
The victory by Winnipeg improves their record to a perfect 5-0 on the regular season. UBC falls two games below .500 at 3-5.
Fifth year players Alex MacIver and Catie Gooch led the Wesmen with 16 points each. Gooch was solid on the defensive end with four steals. Amy Ogidan led the team with ten rebounds.
Alex Vieweg was the best UBC player finishing with 14 points, seven rebounds, four blocks and four steals.
In the opening half where points were hard to come by, Winnipeg led 29-19 at the halftime break. Winnipeg connected on 38% from the field and stepped up on defense holding the T-Birds to only 19 points and 28% from the field.
An early three pointer by Catie Gooch extended Winnipeg's lead to 32-19 when UBC scored eight unanswered points to narrow the Wesmen lead to 32-27. Winnipeg went on a late run to extend their lead to double digits at 41-31 after three quarters.
UBC came within five points 55-50 late in the third but Gooch drained a pair of free throws to seal the victory.
Winnipeg will take their perfect record on the road next week for a pair of games against the Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon on Friday and Saturday.

The hot shooting UBC Thunderbirds outscored the Winnipeg Wesmen 114-86 Saturday night in Vancouver to complete a weekend sweep. The T-Birds won the opening game Friday night 98-81.
The T-Birds connected on 59% of their shots from the field to carry them to victory.
The victory improves UBC's record to 6-2. Winnipeg's record drops to 1-4.
Nathan Yu led UBC with 22 points. Doug Plumb was next with 21 points.
Nolan Gooding led the Wesmen with a game high 23 points and seven assists. Lynden Drayton-Barrow finished with 19 points and six rebounds.
The game was close in the opening quarter with UBC leading 29-20 after ten minutes of play. UBC outscored the Wesmen 24-16 in the second quarter to open up a 53-36 lead at halftime.
The hometown T-Birds continued their hot shooting in the second, connecting on 60% of their shots and scoring 61 points in the final two quarters.
Winnipeg will travel to Saskatoon next week for a weekend series against the defending CIS champions Saskatchewan Huskies.

The Winnipeg Wesmen remain perfect. The Wesmen defeated the UBC Thunderbirds 71-61 Friday evening in Vancouver.
The victory keep Winnipeg unbeaten at 4-0, UBC drops below .500 at 3-4.
The two teams were deadlocked after the opening quarter (15-15). The game turned around in a four minute span, with UBC leading 23-19, Winnipeg went on a 12-0 run to take the lead for good at 31-19. Alex MacIver scored seven points for the Wesmen in that stretch. UBC scored six points before halftime to cut the Wesmen lead to 31-25.
The T-Birds began to fight back early in the second half, but a devastating stretch of less than two minutes in the third quarter crushed their momentum. UBC was down just 35-32 when Kaitlin Rempel hit her shot while being fouled with 5:05 left in the third quarter. She missed her free throw, but the Wesmen grabbed the rebound and Catie Gooch hit a three-pointer to make it a five-point trip down the court for the Wesmen. Gooch then hit another three on their next trip, extending the lead to double digits, and the T-Birds never got closer than seven points behind the rest of the way.
Catie Gooch led the Wesmen with 15 points, including three-three pointers. Amy Ogidan and Alex MacIver each scored 14 points. MacIver and Stephanie Kleysen led the team in rebounds with five.
Zara Huntley led the T-Birds with 15 points, while adding five rebounds and two blocks. Alex Vieweg had a game-high seven rebounds to go with 12 points.
Winnipeg shot 49.1% from the field and 40% from three-point range. The T-Birds were 37.1% field goal shooters, and hit just 13.6% of their threes.

The Winnipeg Wesmen fell short in a 98-81 battle against the UBC Thunderbirds Friday night in Vancouver.
The victory improves UBC's record to 5-2. Winnipeg sits at 1-3.
The Wesmen led the contest 24-19 after the opening ten minutes but the T-Birds outscored the Wesmen 23-14 in the second quarter to take a 42-38 lead into the halftime break.
The battle continued in the third quarter with both teams exchanging baskets in the early moments. UBC led 60--57 6:30 into the quarter and took control of the game soon after scoring eight unanswered points to increase their lead to double digits at 68-57.
Winnipeg was ab;e to cut the lead to eight for a brief moment but UBC poured it on in the fourth quarter to make the final score 98-81.
Josh Whyte led UBC in scoring with 20 points. Nathan Yu added 18 points and Kamar Burke had a double-double 17 points, 19 rebounds and dished out five assists.
Nick Lother led the Wesmen in scoring with 24 points, including four-three pointers. Lynden Drayton-Barrow added 22 points, including five-three pointers and hauled down nine rebounds. Nolan Gooding had 15 points and seven assists.
