WESMEN def Calgary 3-2 (25-18, 16-25, 13-25, 25-20, 15-11)
The Winnipeg Wesmen came back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat the Calgary Dinos 3-2 (25-18, 16-25, 13-25, 25-20, 15-11) Friday night in Calgary, Alberta.
The number eight rank Wesmen lost sets two and three against the number seven ranked Dinos but rebounded in the fourth to force a fifth set.
The victory evens Winnipeg's record to 1-1, Calgary sits at 0-1.
Carleen Kruschel led the Wesmen with 14 kills and 13 defensive digs. Sonia Rossy had 12 kills. Lauren Sears had a strong match with 10 kills and a team leading five blocks. First year setter Brittany Habing was impressive with 32 assists and 13 defensive digs.
Lindsay Doland led Calgary with 17 kills. Maura Hayes had 14 kills while Melanie Miazga added 11kills and five blocks. Brooke Halvorsen finished with 18 digs.
Winnipeg opned the match on a positive note leading at both technical timeouts 8-7 and 16-10 in the opening set. Winnipeg gained the early advantage winning the first set 25-18.
The Dino's regrouped in the second set and raced out to a quick 8-2 lead at the first break and extended their lead to 16-8 at the second technical. Calgary went on to win the second set 25-16 and even the match at one set apiece.
Calgary carried their momentum into set number three and once again got a quick start leading 8-3 at the first break and showing no mercy leading 16-8 at the second break. Calgary would go on to outscore the Wesmen 9-5 down the stretch to win the third set 25-13.
In set number four the tough Wesmen team did not fold leading 8-3 at the first timeout and holding off a Calgary charge to lead 16-14 at the second break. The teams exchanged points to 20-19 in Winnipeg's favour, when the Wesmen closed out the set winning five of the last six points to win the set 25-20.
In the fifth set Winnipeg continued their strong play leading 8-5 at the timeout. After the break, Lauren Sears had three kills down the stretch to give the Wesmen a 14-9 lead. Calgary scored two points to cut the lead to 14-11 but a Calgary service error on the next play gave the Wesmen a 15-11 win in the fifth set.
"We are very happy with the win, but not totally pleased with our performance. It was a gutsy finish by our team" added Wesmen Head Coach Diane Scott.
The two teams will close out their weekend series Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. (Calgary Time, 7:00 p.m. in Winnipeg.

Calgary def WESMEN 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-14, 25-17)
The Winnipeg Wesmen opened up a weekend series against the Calgary Dinos with a 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-14, 25-17) victory Friday night in Calgary, Alberta.
The opening night victory by Calgary has them at 1-0, Winnipeg falls to 0-2 early in the Canada West regular season standings.
Graham Vigrass led Calgary with a match high 17 kills and seven blocks. Allen Meek and Curtis James each finished with 12 kills. Meek was the leader in digs with nine.
Second year middle Matt Dueck led the Wesmen with 10 kills. Marc Ross and Devin Schmidt each added nine kills. Schmidt was in on three blocks and Nathaniel Therrien led the team with 10 digs.
Calgary had control of the match early on leading 8-2 and 16-8 at the technical timeouts. Winnipeg would get no closer than eight points as the Dinos went on to win the opening set 25-16.
The second set was a different story. Calgary held a slim 8-7 lead at the first break and extended their lead to 16-11 at the second break. Calgary looked to be in control leading 20-16 late in the set until Winnipeg scored two quick points to close the gap to 20-18. The teams exchanged points to 23-23 when a kill by Schmidt followed by a Calgary attacking error enabled Winnipeg to win the second set 25-23.
The Dino's regrouped in the third set racing out to leads of 8-3 and 16-8 at the breaks. Calgary kept the pressure on Winnipeg and won the third set 25-14.
Calgary closed out the match leading throughout set number four and eventually closed out the match winning the set 25-17.
" We are better than what we showed tonight, but we have to experience some of these matches on the road in our league", added Wesmen Head Coach Larry McKay.
The two teams will battle Saturday night in the finale of the weekend series. Match time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. (Calgary Time, 9:00 p.m. Winnipeg Time)

The Calgary Dinos picked up a weekend split with the Winnipeg Wesmen with a 3-1 (25-22, 25-12, 22-25, 25-20) vicory Saturday night in Calgary, Alberta.
Winnipeg (1-2) opened the series with a dramatic come from behind five set victory over Calgary (1-1) Friday night.
Linday Russell led Calgary with 16 kills. Brooke Halvorsen had a match high 17 digs for the Dinos.
Carleen Kruschel led the Wesmen with 12 kills and 15 defensive digs. Lauren Sears had nine kills, six blocks and two service aces. Sonia Rossy finished with nine kills and 14 defensive digs.
Winnipeg at one point in the opening set had a seven point lead but Calgary stormed back to win the opening set 25-22 and continued their strong play dominating the second set by a score of 25-12 to take a quick 2-0 lead in the match.
Both teams struggled in the third set but Winnipeg gained some confidence winning the set 25-22 to narrow the gap to 2-1. Winnipeg hit eigh percent against 6.7 percent for Calgary in the set.
The Dinos closed out the match in the fourth set winning 25-20.
Winnipeg will head home to prepare for a weekend series against the defending CIS champion UBC Thunderbirds. Match time on Friday night is 6:00 p.m. Saturday's match will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.
Men's Volleyball at Calgary
Calgary def WESMEN 3-0 (25-16,25-20, 25-19)
The University of Calgary Dinos defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-19) Saturday night in Calgary, Alberta.
The victory improves Calgary's record to 2-0, Winnipeg remains winless at 0-3.
Calgary dominated in all facets, out-hitting the Wesmen significantly. Winnipeg never led with the score above five points, and the Dinos were able to pull away in the middle of each set en route to the relatively easy win.
Graham Vigrass led the Dinos with 11 kills, followed closely by Chris Hoags nine, Curtis James eight, and Allen Meeks seven. Egan, Vigrass counterpart in the middle, was a force defensively at the net, recording seven blocks as Calgary won in that statistical category as well by a 14.5-8 margin.
The Wesmen got an impressive effort from Ty Loewen who led the Wesmen with 10 kills. Matt Dueck was next with five kills on the evening.
Winnipeg struggled with just 29 kills on the night against 22 attack errors.
Winnipeg will play host to the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday and Saturday. Friday's match begins at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday's match is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
