Catie Gooch scored a game high 23 points to lead the Winnipeg Wesmen to a 55-51 victory over the Calgary Dinos Saturday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The victory completes a two game sweep and improves the teams record to 3-0. Calgary with the loss falls to 1-5.
Gooch finished the contest with five three-pointers, five rebounds and was a perfect six-for-six from the free throw line. First year guard Stephanie Kleysen recorded her third straight double-double scoring 13 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Alex Cole and Ashley Hill each scored 11 points to lead Calgary. Cole and Megan Schaufele had six rebounds.
Ashley Hill opened the contest scoring seven points in the opening four minutes to lead the Dinos to a 14-11 lead after the opening ten minutes of play.
Calgary continued to carry the momentum in the second quarter scoring six un-answered points to lead 20-11 early in the quarter. Catie Gooch than found her game, scoring 11 points in a span of over five minutes to cut the Dino lead to 28-25 with under two minutes to play in the opening half. The teams exchanged baskets for the remaning 1:20 as Calgary led at halftime 33-29.
In the third quarter Calgary held the lead for the opening 4:15 until a two pointer by Kleysen gave the Wesmen their first lead of the game at 37-36 with just over five minutes to play in the third quarter. Winnipeg led 42-40 after three quarters.
The stubborn Calgary squad opened the final quarter with six straight points to take the lead back at 46-42. Winnipeg regrouped outscoring the Dino's 9-5 to tie the score at 51-51 with 2:34 left to play. After a technical foul charged to Calgary's bench, Gooch drained two free-throws to give the Wesmen a 53-51 lead. Calgary had a chance to tie the score but Ashley Hill missed two free throws with 25 seconds left. Kleysen clinched the game with 12 seconds left as she was succesfull on two free throws.
Winnipeg (3-0) will travel out west next week for a two game series against the UBC Thunderbirds Friday and Saturday in Vancouver. Calgary will have the bye next week and will host Brandon on Nov 19 and 20.
Notes: At halftime of the men's contest fourth year Wesmen guard
Amy Ogidan had her head shaved at centre court in the Buzzz Off To
Cancer Event. Several fans and Wesmen players donated their hair and
money to the cause with proceeds going to the Childhood Stream of Cancer
Care Manitoba. The event was in memory of Chanel Duncan who passed away

WESMEN 72 Calgary 76
The Calgary Dinos defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 76-72 in front of 1479 spectators at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg Saturday night.
The victory pulls Calgary's record to 3-3, Winnipeg falls to 1-2 early on in the Canada West standings.
Andrew McGuiness led Calgary in scoring with 17 points. Tyler Fidler contributed a double-double in the win (15 points and 14 rebounds). Keenan Milburn finished with 10 points.
Nick Lother led the Wesmen in scoring with a game high 27 points,
including four-three pointers. Nolan Gooding finished with a
double-double, 17 points and 12 rebounds, and added four assists and
four steals. Brayden Duff and Lynden Drayton-Barrow added 12 and 11
points respectively.The Wesmen came out on fire in the opening quarter climbing out to a 15-2 lead over four minutes into the game. The hard charging Calgary team fought back outscoring the Wesmen 12-3 down the stretch to cut the Winnipeg lead to 18-14 after the opening quarter.
Both teams exchanged points in an evenly played second quarter with both sides scoring 18 points in the quarter. Winnipeg went into the halftime break leading 36-32.
Winnipeg came out strong in the third quarter and extended their lead to eight (43-35) three minutes into the third frame. Calgary stormed back once again running off six straight points to cut the deficit to 43-41. Calgary managed to tie the score at 46-46 on a three pointer by Andrew McGuinness, to mark the first time the score was even. McGuinness drained another three-pointer 15 seconds later to give Calgary the lead for the first time in the contest (49-48). The Dinos led after three quarters 53-50.
In the final frame, both teams battled with the score tied on five occassions in the first seven minutes. The Dinos with the score tied at 65-65, put the game away scoring seven unanswered points to take the lead 72-65 and eventually would go on to win the game 76-72.
Winnipeg will head to Vancouver next week for a two game series against the UBC Thunderbirds. Calgary will have the bye next week and will host Brandon on Nov 19 and 20.

Women's Basketball vs Calgary

A total team effort lifted the Winnipeg Wesmen to a hard fought 60-56 victory over the University of Calgary Dino's Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Every player on the Wesmen roster hit the scoresheet to figure in the victory and improve the teams record to 2-0 early on in the Canada West regular season. Calgary falls to 1-4.
Fifth year guard Catie Gooch led the Wesmen with a game high 15 points, including four-three pointers. First year guard Stephanie Kleysen had her second consecutive double-double scoring ten points and hauling down a game high 15 rebounds. Gooch and Kleysen contributed on defense with six and five steals respectiveley.
Kiersta Hilton led Calgary with 11 points. Megan Lang added 10 points, six assists and six steals. Alex Cole led the team in rebounds with nine.
Winnipeg gained the early advantage in a tight opening quarter. Both teams relied on strong defensive play as the Wesmen led 13-8 after the opening ten minutes of play.
Calgary fought back in the second quarter outscoring the Wesmen 19-17 to go into the halftime break trailing 30-27. Calgary was successfull on 42% of their shots from the field in the opening half, Winnipeg finished at 28%.
The defensive battle between the two Canada West rivals continued in the second half, with the Wesmen outscoring Calgary 30-29 in the final twenty minutes.
Calgary and Winnipeg will close out their two game weekend series Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Tip off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time)
Notes: Both teams finished with 39 total rebounds, Winnipeg had the edge on the offensive side with 21 compared to 12 for the Dinos. Winnipeg had 18 steals, Calgary 11.

WESMEN 78 Calgary 67
The Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the University of Calgary Dinos 78-67 in their home opener of the 2010-2011 regular season Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The Wesmen coming off a regular season opening loss at Manitoba last Saturday, improve their record to 1-1. Calgary drops below .500 to 2-3.
Benny Iko led the Wesmen registering a double-double (18 points, 10 rebounds). Guard Nolan Gooding finished with 16 points, five assists and four steals. Kelvin Smith added 12 points and Lynden Drayton-Barrow had 11 points.
Calgary was led by Tyler Fidler's game high 20 points and 19 rebounds. Keenan Milburn added 11 points and three assists.
The game was close in the opening quarter with neither team leading by more than three points. Winnipeg led after the opening quarter 17-16.
The second quarter started out close but with Calgary holding on to a 20-19 lead, early in the quarter Winnipeg reeled of ten straight points (six by Bennny Iko) in a three minute span to take a 29-20 lead. Winnipeg continued to outplay the Dinos and went into the halftime break with a 43-31 lead.
Winnipeg connected on 47% from the field in the opening half, Calgary connected on 38%. Benny Iko had 16 points and six rebounds in the opening half.
After the halftime break, Calgary came out on fire in the third. The Dino's outscored the Wesmen 16-4 in the opening 6:30 to tie the score at 47-47. Winnipeg regrouped and led by Nolan Gooding's seven points, outscored Calgary 13-1 down the stretch to regain their double digit lead at 60-48 after three quarters.
Winnipeg remained in front in the fourth quarter in double digits and went on to win their home opener 78-67.
The two teams will meet again at the Duckworth Centre on Saturday night. Game time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. (Wpg Time)
