So far so good. The Winnipeg Wesmen opened up the 2010-2011 regular season with a solid 65-47 victory over the Manitoba Bisons Friday night at the University of Manitoba.First year guard Stephanie Kleysen and fourth year guard Amy Ogidan led Winnipeg with 13 points each. Fifth year guard Catie Gooch added 10 points. Kleysen led the team in rebounding with 10 to complete the double-double in her first CIS regular season game.
Mubo Ilelaboye led Manitoba with 12 points and eight rebounds. Lauren Mortier finished with 10 points and a game high six assists.
Winnipeg held the advantage early on holding an 18-15 lead in a defensive and tight opening quarter.
The Wesmen took control of the game in the second quarter outscoring Manitoba 13-4 to take a 31-19 lead into the halftime break. Winnipeg's aggressive defense held Manitoba off the scoreboard until the 5:47 mark of the quarter.
After the halftime break, Winnipeg continued their strong defensive play holding the Bisons to 28 second half points while scoring 34 of their own to make the final score 65-47.
" It was a great team effort. The entire team played hard and smart for the entire game", said Wesmen head coach Tanya McKay.
Winnipeg (1-0) will next see action in their home opener on Friday, November 5th against the University of Calgary Dinos. Game time at the Duckworth Centre is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

WESMEN 88 Manitoba 108
A shootout between cross town rivals opened up the Canada West regular season schedule. The Manitoba Bisons defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 108-88 Friday evening at the University of Manitoba.Six Manitoba players figured in double digits. Eric Garcia led the way with 20 points. Josh Ogden and Richard Reimer each scored 16. Sean Maxwell and Tanner Draward put in 14 and Marko Milosevic added 10.
Reimer led the Bisons with a game high 15 rebounds.
The Wesmen had four players in double-digits with Nick Lother leading the team with a game high 30 points. Nolin Gooding added 21. Kelvin Smith finished with 13 and Lynden Drayton Barrow had 10. Brayden Duff led the team with 12 rebounds and three blocks.
Winnipeg had the early momentum early on in the game. Manitoba held an early 11-9 lead when the Wesmen responded with seven straight points to lead 16-11 with over five minutes to play in the opening quarter. The Wesmen went on to lead 26-22 after one quarter.
The Bisons gained control in the second quarter outscoring the Wesmen 31-18 and taking a 53-44 lead into the locker room at halftime.Both teams were over 40% from the field in the opening half. Winnipeg at 43% while Manitoba finished at 50% for the half.
The Bisons broke the game open in the third quarter outscoring the Wesmen 30-16 to take a commanding 83-60 lead into the final frame.
Winnipeg closed out the contest outscoring the Bisons in the fourth quarter (28-25) to make the final score 108-88.
Winnipeg (0-1) will open up their 2010-2011 regular season home schedule on Friday November 5th against the University of Calgary Dinos. Game time at the Duckworth Centre is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
