Wesmen Beat Brandon At BOB FM Shootout

The Winnipeg Wesmen Closed Out The BOB FM Shootout With An Impressive 70-41 Win Over The Brandon BobCats..





The BOB FM Women's Basketball Shootout will take place this starting Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.  The host Winnipeg Wesmen will challenge the Manitoba Bisons, Brandon Bobcats and Lakehead Thunderwolves in the three day tournament.

First year guard Stephanie Kleysen scored a game high 16 points to help lead the Winnipeg Wesmen to a 54-49 victory over the Lakehead University Thunderwolves in the opening game of the 2010 BOB FM Shootout at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Kleysen finished the game with 14 rebounds to record a double-double in her first CIS game.

"It was a great start to her CIS career. She is a hard worker who makes things happen", said Wesmen Head Coach Tanya McKay.

Fifth year guard Catie Gooch scored 13 points, including three-of-six from three point territory.

Tasia McKenna and Darcy Zinck led Lakehead with 12 points each.

Winnipeg jumped out to a 17-5 lead after the opening quarter thanks in part to the duo of Kleysen and Gooch who combined for 16 of Winnipeg's 17 points in the quarter.

Lakehead started the second quarter on a 6-2 run to cut the Wesmen lead to 19-11. Winnipeg held off the charge and extended their lead to double digits when Gooch nailed a three-pointer with 40 seconds in the half to send the Wesmen to the halftime break leading 27-17.

The Thunderwolves outscored the Wesmen 32-27 in the final half to pull close but Winnipeg was able to record the win in their first pre-season game of the 2010-2011 season.

Winnipeg (1-0) will take on their cross town rivals Manitoba Bisons Saturday night at 6:00 p.m.

The University of Manitoba Bisons used a strong final quarter to defeat the Winnipeg Wesmen 69-60 at the BOB FM Shootout Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.

Manitoba trailed 56-52 after three quarters but outscored the Wesmen 17-4 in the final frame.

Fifth year guard Kayla Klassen led Manitoba with 21 points, including six three-pointers. Lauren Mortier finished with 14 and Whitney Lodge-Zaparnick added 12. Mubo Ilelaboye led the Bisons on the boards with 11 rebounds.

Fourth year guard Amy Ogidan led Winnipeg with a double-double 23 points, 14 rebounds. Fifth year guard Catie Gooch added 16 points, including four-three pointers. First year guard Stephanie Kleysen had seven points and eight rebounds.

Winnipeg had control in the early stages of the opening quarter leading 16-7 with over four minutes to play. Manitoba caught fire  in the later stages outscoring Winnipeg 9-2 to cut the deficit to 18-16 after the opening quarter.

Manitoba continued to hold the momentum in the second quarter and regained the lead at 24-21 early on. A three-pointer by Kayla Klassen with just under five minutes to play gave the Bisons their largest lead of the half at 33-25. Winnipeg went on an impressive 11-5 run to close out the quarter and trail 38-36 at halftime.

Catie Gooch scored eight points in the third quarter to help the Wesmen outscore Manitoba 20-14 and regain the lead at 56-52 after three quarters.

The Bisons outplayed Winnipeg in the final frame and picked up their first victory of this years BOB FM Tournament.

Winnipeg will close out the tournament against Brandon Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. Manitoba will take on Lakehead Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m.

The Winnipeg Wesmen saved their best game for last. The Wesmen defeated the Brandon University Bobcats 70-41 to close out the BOB FM Shootout Sunday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre.

Four Wesmen players figured in double-digits. Alyssa Grant led the way with a double-double 15 points and 10 rebounds. Amy Ogidan added 13 followed by Stephanie Kleysen with 12 and Alex MacIver finished with 11.

Stephanie Lacey-Avon led Brandon with 10 points. Amanda Fortin led the Bobcats in rebounding with a game high 14 boards.

Winnipeg raced out to a 20-11 lead after the opening quarter and outscored Brandon 23-9 in the second to take a commanding lead of 43-20 into the halftime break.

The Wesmen kept the pressure on in the second half, opening the third quarter scoring nine unanswered points to extend the lead even further to 52-20 midway thru the third quarter. The Wesmen led 57-29 after three and closed out the contest outscoring Brandon 13-12 in the fourth to make the final score 70-41.

Winnipeg finishes the three day tournament with a record of 2-1 tied with the Manitoba Bisons. As a result of Manitoba's earlier win over the Wesmen, the Bison's are the 2010 BOB FM Women's Basketball Shootout champions.
