The Queens University Gaels rebounded from an opening set loss to defeat the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (20-25, 25-16, 25-21, 25-23) in a pre-season match Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre.
The Wesmen won the opening set only to see the Gaels storm back taking the next three to win the match.
Joren Zeeman led the Gaels with a match high 21 kills. Bryan Fautley was next with 17. Alex Oneid had a match high 16 digs.
Marc Ross led the Wesmen with 11 kills and 14 defensive digs. Matt Dueck was strong at the net with five blocks.
The first set saw the Wesmen lead 8-6 at the first break only to have Queens come back to lead 16-12 at the second break. The Wesmen rebounded after the timeout to outscore Queens 13-4 to win the opening set 25-20.
Queens rebounded in set number two leading 8-4 and 16-8 at the set breaks. The Gaels went on to win the second set 25-16 to even the match.
The third set was a carbon copy of the previous, with Queens leading at both timeouts by scores of 8-6 and 16-13. The Gaels grabbed the lead in the match winning the third set 25-21.
The Wesmen fell behind in set number four on many occasions but were able to bounce back and cut into several leads especially late in the set. Queens held a 21-18 lead only to see Winnipeg rattle off four straight points to take a 22-21 lead. The teams battled to 23-23 when the Gaels closed out the match with two straight points to win the final set 25-23.
The two teams will close out their two match pre-season series on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

The Queen's University Gaels defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-19) in a pre-season match Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.
Queen's defeated Winnipeg 3-1 in the opening match of the series on Thursday night.
Winnipeg fell behind early in the first set but manged to fight back on several occasions to close the gap. The Gaels rebounded to win the opening set 25-19.
The Gaels dominated set number two racing out to a big lead and not looking back in a 25-13 set win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Queen's held the advantage at both technical timeouts during the third set and closed out the match winning the third set 25-19.
Winnipeg will see their next pre-season action on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. against Waterloo at the Duckworth Centre.
Waterloo def WESMEN 3-2 (25-13, 25-19, 14-25, 21-25, 15-12)
The Winnipeg Wesmen fell behind early and just fell short in completing the comeback. The Waterloo University Warriors defeated the Wesmen 3-2 (25-13, 25-19, 14-25, 21-25, 15-12) in pre-season action Sunday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre.
The Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 set lead only to see the Wesmen storm back winning sets three and four and falling just short in the fifth.
Waterloo opened the match in the first set leading 8-5 at the first technical timeout and extending their lead to 16-10 at the second break. The Warriors kept the pressure on the Wesmen outscoring Winnipeg 9-3 to win the opening set 25-13.
Winnipeg regrouped in the second set and led 8-5 at the first break. Waterloo took advantage of some unforced errors and took a 16-13 lead into the second break. Waterloo went on to win the second set 25-19 and grab a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Wesmen found their legs in the third set leading 8-5 and 16-12 at the technical timeouts. Winnipeg scored five of the next six points to push their lead to 21-13. Second year setter Dominique Pereira served up a pair of aces late in the match to help the Wesmen to a 25-14 win in the third set.
Second year player Matt Schriemer was a wrecking crew in the fourth set. The 6'7" outside finished with six kills in the set to lead the Wesmen to a 25-21 win in the fourth set.
The two teams exchanged points early and often in the fifth set. The teams battled to 10-10, when Waterloo scored three straight points to take a 13-10 lead. The Warriors would close out the match taking the fifth set 15-12.
