Wesmen Beat UBC For Bronze

The Wesmen Defeated The UBC Thunderbirds In Three Sets To Win The Bronze Medal At The Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge Sunday Afternoon..






The 2010 "Lea marc Volleyball Challenge" will take place at the Duckworth Centre from Friday, October 1 - Sunday October 3. Women's volleyball teams from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Regina, Brandon and UBC will take part in the three day tournament. As an added feature the Men's Volleyball team will take on Queen's University on Saturday, followed by a match against Waterloo on Sunday afternoon.

The Brandon University Bobcats opened up the 2010 Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge with a 3-1 (25-23, 25-21, 11-25, 25-23) victory over the host Winnipeg Wesmen Friday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre.

Brandon opened the match leading 8-3 at the first technical of the opening set. Winnipeg rebounded going on a 11-8 run to trail by two 16-14 at the second timeout. The Bobcats went on to win the opening set by a score of 25-23.

In the second set Brandon led at both timeouts and went on to win the set 25-21 and take a 2-0 set lead.

Winnipeg rebounded in the third set leading 8-3 and 16-9 at the set breaks. The Wesmen continued to dominate closing out the set on a 9-3 run to win the set 25-12 and narrow the match score to 2-1.

A close fourth set saw both teams battling at the net with superb defensive play and lengthy rallies. The teams exchanged points late in the set to 23-23 only to see the Brandon win the final two points to take the set 25-23.

Winnipeg (0-1) will face their cross-town rivals Manitoba Bisons in the evening match at 7:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

In another classic battle between cross town rivals, the Manitoba Bisons defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen  (25-23, 25-21, 28-26) in three close sets Friday night at the Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge held at the Duckworth Centre.

The story of the first set was each team taking turns with several big runs. Winnipeg stormed out of the gate leading 8-3 at the first technical timeout. After a Manitoba service error gave the Wesmen a 9-3 lead, the Bisons went on an 8-0 run to take their first lead of the set 11-9. The Bisons scored five of the next seven points to take a 16-11 lead into the second timeout. Winnipeg responded soon after trailing 17-13, running off five straight points to take an 18-17 lead. The teams exchanged points till the end of the set which eventually saw Manitoba win 25-23.

Things continued to go the Bisons way in the second set, leading at both technical timeouts (8-2 and 16-14). Winnipeg continued to stay close to Manitoba late in set, closing the gap to 21-20, only to see Manitoba score four of the last five points to win the second set 25-21.

In a back and fourth third set, both teams exchanged points early and often. Winnipeg held onto a 16-15 at the second timeout and both battled down the stretch with the score tied on five occasions late in the set. The Bisons scored the final two points to win the third set 28-26.

Winnipeg (0-2) will look to rebound on Saturday with matches against Regina at 12:00 p.m. followed by an evening match against UBC at 6:00 p.m.

Manitoba def Brandon 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-22)

The Winnipeg Wesmen picked up their first win of the 2010 Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge with a 3-1 (25-13, 22-25, 25-22, 25-16) victory over the Regina Cougars Saturday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre.

The Wesmen coming off two defeats on Friday, improve their record to 1-2. The Cougars remain winless at 0-3.

Winnipeg started the match on a solid note leading at both technical timeouts by scores of 8-6 and 16-11. The Wesmen kept the pressure on outscoring the Cougars 9-2 down the stretch to win the opening set 25-13.

In set number two, the Cougars rebounded leading throughout the set, including 8-3 and 16-9 at the set breaks. Regina evened the match winning the set 25-22.

Winnipeg regained the edge in the third set leading 8-6 and 16-15 in a close affair. The teams exchanged points to 23-22 when the Wesmen pounded home the final two points to win the set 25-22 and take a 2-1 sets lead in the match.

In the fourth set, the Wesmen used their momentum to race out to an 8-5 lead at the first technical timeout and followed that up with five unanswered points to grab a 13-5 lead midway through the set. The Wesmen went on to lead 16-9 at the second break and eventually closed out the match with a 25-16 set win.

Winnipeg (1-2) will take on the UBC Thunderbirds in the final match of the preliminary round Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

The UBC Thunderbirds rebounded from two sets down to defeat the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-2 (21-25, 21-25, 25-22, 25-16, 15-13) in the final match of the round robin at the 2010 Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.

UBC completes the round robin with a record of 2-2, Winnipeg finishes at 1-3.

Winnipeg opened the first set leading 6-2, when the T-Birds rebounded scoring six unanswered points to take a 8-6 lead at the first technical timeout. Winnipeg went on an impressive run and led 16-13 at the second break. The Wesmen continued their strong play and won the opening set 25-21.

The Wesmen continued their strong play in the second set leading 8-2 at the first break and never looked back winning the set 25-21 and holding a 2-0 set lead in the match.

UBC rebounded winning the third set 25-22 and maintaining their momentum to win the fourth set 25-16 to force a fifth and deciding set.

The teams exchanged points back and fourth in the final set until the T-Birds closed out the match winning the fifth set 15-13.

Winnipeg and UBC will meet on Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m. in the bronze medal match. Manitoba and Brandon will play for the gold medal at 1:00 p.m.

WESMEN def  UBC 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 26-24)  (Bronze Medal Match)

The Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the UBC Thunderbirds 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 26-24) in the bronze medal match at the 2010 Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge Sunday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre.

The two teams met for the second time in as many days. UBC beat Winnipeg in a five set affair in the finale of the round robin Saturday night.

Winnipeg built an 8-3 lead in the opening set and led at the second timeout 16-12. UBC scored five unanswered points to tie the score at 18-18. The Wesmen closed out the first set on a 7-2 run to win the set 25-20.

In the second set Winnipeg continued their strong play, holding leads at both timeouts eventually winning the set 25-16 and grabbing a 2-0 lead in the match.

UBC gave the Wesmen everything they could handle in the third set but the Wesmen held off the charge and went on to close out the match with a hard fought 26-24 win in the third set.

Wesmen Head Coach Diane Scott was overall pleased with her teams performance all weekend.

"We had a great weekend as a team, tons of growth over the last couple of weeks and definitely lots of room left to go. Everyone played well and contributed to our success, I am very proud of the teams performance", said Scott.
