Vigil Tonight At UWinnipeg
December 17, 2012
On behalf of the entire
UWinnipeg community, President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Lloyd Axworthy expresses
our shared grief and sadness for our former colleague, Nelba Márquez-Greene.
She and her husband, Jimmy Greene, lost their daughter, Ana Grace
Márquez-Greene, in a tragic incident at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in
Newtown, CT this past Friday. Ana is survived by her brother, Isaiah, who was
also in the school at the time.
Nelba Márquez-Greene taught in UWinnipeg's Masters in Marriage & Family
Therapy program, and was a therapist at the Aurora Family Therapy Centre at the
University of Winnipeg, from 2010 until July 2012. During her time at our
institution, she touched the lives of many on campus and throughout Winnipeg.
So that the community may come together in this time of collective grief, a
candlelight vigil will be held outside Aurora Family Therapy Centre (Sparling
Hall) at The University of Winnipeg, tonight (Monday, December 17) at 7:00 p.m.
To create a lasting tribute in honour of Ana, Aurora is facilitating the establishment of a memorial bursary through the University of Winnipeg Foundation. Dontations gratefully accepted here.
Funeral service information will be shared with the community as it becomes available. Some may want to send flowers, cards, e-mails, or other gestures of support. Aurora is committed to helping coordinate these efforts so that, individually, we do not overwhelm the family.
