Dedicated Faculty Receive Awards At Spring Convocation


WINNIPEG, MB - Five members of The University of Winnipeg community, Dr. Jennifer Brown, Dr. Angela Failler, Dr. Melaine Martin, Dr. Ken McCluskey, and Dr. Iain McDougall, will be honoured with awards for their outstanding contributions to the University and the broader community for their distinguished scholarship and research at UWinnipeg's upcoming Spring Convocation ceremonies on June 7 and 8, 2012. (awards listed in alphabetical order by recipient's name)

Dr. Jennifer Brown

The honour of Professor Emerita will be conferred on retired History Professor and former Director of the Centre for Rupert's Land, Dr. Jennifer S. H. Brown. A former Canada Research Chair in Aboriginal Peoples in an Urban and Regional Context, Dr. Brown is a distinguished ethnohistorian who has made significant contributions to the understandings of fur trade history and of Northern Algonquian and Métis peoples. These accomplishments and her service to the University of Winnipeg has earned her this prestigious rank.

Dr. Angela Failler

Clifford J. Robson Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching will be given to Dr. Angela Failler, Associate Professor of Sociology and Women's and Gender Studies. Dr. Failler is persistently described as an outstanding educator. Among the top in her generation, she has earned one of the University of Winnipeg's highest honours in recognition of the esteem with which she is held by her students and colleagues as a teacher.

Dr. Melanie Martin

Erica & Arnold Rogers Award for Excellence in Research and Scholarship will be awarded to Associate Professor of Physics, Dr. Melanie Martin, for her distinguished work in developing state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging techniques for identifying and quantifying the physical effects of debilitating central nervous diseases (i.e. multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's).

Dr. Ken McCluskey

Robin H. Farquhar Award for Excellence in Contributing to Self-Governance will be awarded to Dean and Professor of Education, Dr. Ken McCluskey. Dr. McCluskey is known internationally for his work in the fields of mentoring gifted education and at-risk children and youth, as well as for his unconventional, creative and innovative leadership style. Under McCluskey's leadership UWinnipeg's Faculty of Education has become a leader in mentoring and community outreach.

The honour of Professor Emeritus will be conferred on retired Classics Professor, Dr. Iain McDougall. Dr. McDougall has earned this honour for his impressive contribution and impact on the Department of Classics during his 30 years of service to the University. His scholarship is nationally and internationally known and respected. Dr. McDougall has brought prestige to UWinnipeg and has created broad and lasting benefits to his students, colleagues and the discipline of Classics in general.
