Software Update Services (SUS)
SUS has been set up for the automatic retrieval of critical operating system patches available through Microsoft. All University-owned systems on campus running Windows 2000 and above can be configured to receive these updates through SUS.SUS Client Installation Instructions - Non-UWin Project Systems
Users of non-UWin Project systems will have to configure the client software manually. Detailed installation instructions are provided here, including screenshots to help users through a configuration of the Windows Update client service.
SUS Client Operations - UWin Project Desktop Systems
Systems deployed through UWin are configured to receive critical updates through SUS in the following manner:
- 5 minutes after boot up, the system will query the SUS server for updates
- If new updates are available, the system will download them and store them locally
- At approximately 12:00PM (a default time set for all UWin Project systems) users will be prompted to install the new updates
- Updates will be automatically installed if the prompt is not acknowledged
Patch Deployments
Microsoft releases critical updates monthly (usually the second Tuesday of the month) and are normally released to campus systems a week after they are received by the SUS server. During this time, some patches are tested for functionality.
A listing of released patches is available here.Because of the complex structure of systems and software used across campus, not all patches can and will be tested. Administrators of critical systems are therefore urged to configure their Update software not to automatically install patches. Please see the installation instructions on how to manually adjust the SUS client.
