UofW Campus Anti Virus

The University has recently acquired a campus license for ESET Nod32 Anti Virus software to run on the Windows platform.  TSC Desktop Services is gradually rolling out Nod32, replacing Trend Micro OfficeScan.  Please note that Nod32 is licensed for campus owned computers only.  There is no support for home systems.

It is recommended that home users acquire their own AV software - either through their Internet Service Provider (usually free of charge) or a local retailer.

Advanced information on ESET Nod32 can be found on their website - http://www.eset.com

Using ESET Nod32

Nod32 appears as a small green “eyeball” in your taskbar. When you first start your machine, Nod32 will perform a brief scan of your machine and check for any pattern file updates.

You can determine what version and pattern file of Nod32 you are running by passing your mouse over the icon. Nod32 will keep itself updated automatically provided your system is connected to the campus network.  If you have a laptop and take it off site, you will not be able to receive these updates until you plug your machine back into the network.

Nod32 Operations

By default, Nod32 performs very aggressive scanning of files and will automatically remove anything potentially malicious. This includes auto scanning of USB drives, external hard disks and any other storage devices you plug into your machine. Nod32 also protects you from web-based threats such as hostile web scripts and Email attachments.

Nod32 (or any other Anti virus software) cannot protect you from downloads that you accept as part of a software package or “agree” to at a web site. Examples of this type of malware are fake Anti virus software and free utilities like web smilies.

To get access to the Nod32 console, double-click on the taskbar icon. The console allows you to perform various functions like updating your software manually and doing a manual scan.

To perform a manual scan, launch the console and select Computer Scan from the left. You can either perform a smart scan or a manual one if you have multiple drives:

To manually update your pattern files, launch the console and select the Update option on the left. Then click on Update virus signature database.

The Tools section allows you to check your logs to see if your system was threatened by malware and how Nod32 handled the infection. Launch the console and click on Tools > Log Files to see the list. Click on the Quarantine option to see if anything has been handled by Nod32.

iceScan licensing has been extended for staff and faculty to be used on home systems.

OfficeScan install CDs can be obtained by contacting the Technology Help Desk at 786-9149, or via email at help.desk@uwinnipeg.ca .  Please be patient, as there usually a waiting list for these CDs.
