Indigenous Spiritual & Pastoral Care Diploma


This diploma is a two year post secondary program. It is accredited professional preparation for Indigenous Spiritual and Pastoral Care-giving in Manitoba.

Its intent is to provide training for Indigenous people by Indigenous instructors. Grauduates will have specialized training to provide spiritual care for Indigenous people in various institutions throughout Manitoba.

Program Requirements:
The Diploma consists of 432 Hours of contact time, or, 36 credit hours, or twelve 3 hour courses. Taken full-time over two years the Diploma would consist
of six 3 hour courses, or 18 credit hours, per year.
    
The three areas of development are, as follows: Professional, Knowledge and Personal Development with twelve credit hours required in each area. First
year courses are designated in bold and second year courses are in italics; courses that can be taken either year are in regular font.

I. Professional Development - 12 credit hours required
3 hrs – Introduction to the Diploma course must be taken in the first year. It will be taught every Fall Term by members of the Diploma Leadership Team, or their designates.
9 hrs – Clinical Training    

II. Knowledge Development
12 credit hours required
3 hrs - Introduction to the Bible
3 hrs - Introduction to Indigenous wisdom
3 hrs - History of relations between Indigenous peoples and Christianity in Canada  
3 hrs – Elective (Sacred source study, Theology, History, Cree, Ojibway)    
    
III. Personal Development
12 credit hours required
6 hrs – Returning to Spirit: Module 1 and  2
3 hrs – (Sacred source study, Theology, History)
3 hrs – Integrative Seminar. This course must be taken in the last year. Successful completion of this course will designate competency for the offering of spiritual care within a clinical setting. A strong component of this course will be guidance on how to interact with the current various institutions (Health, Justice, and various missions).

Admission Requirements:
To qualify for admission, applicants will normally meet both of the following requirements:
1) Be of Indigenous ancestry (First Nations, Metis, Inuit)
2) Recommendation from a Community Elder or Spiritual Advisor.
NB If an applicant is not of Indigenous ancestry they may still be admitted with a strong recommendation from a Community Elder or Spiritual Advisor and completion of Returning to Spirit before taking other classes.   
AND
3) Be a graduate of a High School (or G.E.D., or its equivalent)
OR
Be 19 years of age or older and have completed at least one of the following conditions:
a) two years of related work experience verified by an Elder or Spiritual Advisor
b) 90 hours of course work at a post-secondary institution

One letter of intent from the student.
One letter of reference from community elder or spiritual advisor.
Official transcripts from secondary and post-secondary school/s.

Administration:
The Indigenous Spiritual and Pastoral Care Diploma will follow the same general academic policies regarding admission, registration, international student requirements, appeals and discipline, etc., as other programs within the Faculty of Theology.
